I thought it's be fun to talk about some "rariant" game consoles. In this one, the Japanese PSX by Sony. This is a DVR with a PlayStation 2 built in. I'll be discussing the history, some-what of a review, and my experience with it.
My Instagram: / adam_koralik - Hry
My PSX works and I even updated the dash board to English.
Jelly I want to do that
Lies
@@Dandre181 You can٫ There's a mod you can do.
"Just a standard white PlayStation 2 controller" is incorrect. The controllers include with the PSX actually had a longer cord on them, likely due to the fact the controller ports were in the back.
The XMB is the best console interface of all time, in my opinion.
My brother just modded one of our PS2s, haven't played any PS1 or 2 games in a while, and now I can't stop :P
(Fun Fact) The PSX had PS NOW© on it. Not the version that exists today, (they just re used the name as it was already copyrighted) I'm not sure but i belive PS NOW© on PSX was some form of internet/media service.
Cool©
Good wisdom
Also, by using Free Mc Boot, you can still play ps1 and ps2 games on this thing, even if the HDD is dead.
Finally a video with 'PSX' in the title were it refers to the correct systeem. A PS1 is not a PSX.
+Erik2Ammo Happy to.
AdamKoralik Thanks for the nice video, it's an interesting system.
Thanks for watching!
So I'm sitting here watching this wondering "when is he gonna open up the white box and show the console". Then you flip down the front flap on it, and it is the console. That's some M. Night Shyamalan stuff you just pulled on me dude.
WHAT A TWIST!
Send it to Ben Heck. He fixed the Nintendo Play Station.
Honestly I'd like to see thoughts in general that a Nintendo Play Station exists...
czcams.com/video/EglzlF20iDE/video.html
Let Ben Heck work on it. He would make a few videos fixing it.
id watch!
that exactly what i was thinking!
True
Love the rare console overviews Adam! Always nice hearing your opinions and insight on these consoles.
I love the rare and obscure consoles and the history that comes with them . Another great video !
Keep up this type of vids man their really nice!
Great video, didn't know about the history of that thing. Thanks for video.
Very interesting and informative video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching!
Adam please do a video on the Panasonic game cube
He already did
In his Gen 5 retrospective when he talked about the gamecube he showed it
+CAX 117 He did technically!
I agree to that Adam have video on the Panasonic Q.
I've been waiting for this😆 as well a Nother great video!
These are so interesting, definitely will watch more
Definitely intrigued by these videos of consoles. Really like what you do with these Adam.
Thanks.
Im here in okinawa japan and i found one in a second hand store for about the equivalent of $10. The bar on the front that hides the memory cards is broken off, but i have the bar and the remote too.
Dude, nice haul. Do you live there or just visiting?
AdamKoralik I live here. Been here for 5 years now
Awesome, how is it?
Pretty cool. I only speak a small amount of japanese but there are lots of americans around because of all of the military bases on the small island so it's not a big deal. There are only a few stores that i know of that sell retro games and consoles, but they always have tons of stuff. I started collecting a bit since im out here and i've gotten quite a bit of working consoles for practically nothing.
Awesome, I'm jealous.
Yippee another rare variants! Great vid adam! Do more of these please.
Hey adam did you hear about the SEGA Saturn being cracked, I mean the DRM! Now you can burn games on the Saturn!
i actually bought one of these on ebay for about $160 w/ the box, and the update disc, the listing said untested and when it srrived it was fully functional and read ps1, ps2 blue disc, ps2 dvd discs and ps2 gold discs, i got extremely lucky, and im glad to have it, its one of the coolest looking consoles i have, im glad i bought it so i could play my japanese ps2 and ps1 games easy without modding my ntsc ps2
Really I'm wouldn't paying that much if I were you since it have a very high chance for one of these things not working.
I'm bidding for one of these for a dollar on Yahoo Auction let's see if that bid amount stays...
Awesome video Adam! I don't know much about rare stuff, it's great that you give us these knowledges! :D
Thanks for watching!
Always an interesting video, thanks for making consistently great videos.
Thanks!
Good vid. The hardware videos are so much better than the conventions and pickups.
cool video, never even heard of this.
was good to meet you in Derby.
+gazzman2006 Thanks for coming out!
Great video! So interesting.
Thanks for watching!
I'm shocked that it had such a large hard drive for 2003. Fast forward to now and Sony can't even be bothered to pack in more than 1GB of storage on the Vita lol.
Hell, the PS4 only launched with 500GB in 2013!
+James Tobias Yeah, only 500 Fucking gigabytes!!!!!!
+Otakugamer2000 My HDD space ran out in like two months. Couple that with vastly oversized games with awful install times, and you have me switching to PC and never going back. My 3TB HDD still isn't even close to full, and I have 4 times as many games on my PC than my PS4.
+James Tobias ok sorry :)
+Otakugamer2000 lol that's my little rant for the day over with
I think the logic of the controller ports on the back is so the console doesn’t get pulled off the shelf if somebody gets mad and pull on the cord. It’s a half decent idea in theory, but it’s still really inconvenient and hard to wire
awesome!!! great video!
Thanks James!
Hey, just picked one up for $10. It's a cool looking little box, i'm using it as my main dvd player in the retro setup right now. It's nice to have if you want a cheap curio, even if it doesn't work.
One wonders why on earth they didn't put the controller ports on the front and the Memory Card readers on the back, if there's something you don't mind hiding it's those memory cards sticking out! The controller ports and memory card slots are roughly the same size too!
Cheers Adam always awesome to see PSX videos, I wanted one for so long but found out sadly the easily get faulty :(.
Thanks for the video. I found a Game Changer for the PSX and I was wondering what the heck was a PSX but now I know.
I have heard about this from fellow CZcamsr MeltingMan234 and his forgotten media series. I remember seeing the Dashboard showing the OS that the PS3 had just like you said. He also showed the Picture of the controller that went with it. Very cool collectors piece to own.
Great video. I've heard of the PSX before and it's a fascinating piece of kit. Maybe I'll get it someday. Right now I'm focusing on Wii U and PS3.
Oh, and the story of the guy at Toyratt giving you it for free is really cool.
Beast video as usual
I really want one of these.
I ve always wanted it!
we need more variant vids please ;)
too bad theyre not reliable because I'd love to have one. I love ps2 but it would be cool to have this unique model that none of my friends have
That's awesome you getting that for free! I remember seeing that system in a magazine and thought to myself, is Sony gonna make this a standard console? Cause even today, I still think that console looks so damn cool. But I remember I wanted that thing SO bad.
Hay Adam, I think with the static when you turn on your PSX needs to be hooked up to a cable wire. Or when you bring up the home screen bring up the cross media bar and turn off the tv part. I have one and that worked for me. 👍🏾
Hey Adam, I'm pretty sure you are aware there was a TV with a PS2 built in. Do you have any plans to acquire one? it would be awesome for this series.
I'm unfamiliar with that actually.
Huh, neat.
Those Tv's with built in ps2's, known as the Sony KDL22PX300, got also released in some parts of Europe. I bought one myself a few months ago secondhand. A great piece of kit if you ask me. It's also region locked I'm afraid...
If i'd have to pick one downside, it would be the sound. The volume doesn't really live up to my expectations, so it's hooked to my 2.1 stereo set which does the trick :)
If it's region-locked, any idea if it can be chipped in similar way that regular PS2 can? I.e. is it internally PS2 motherboard hardwired to the TV or custom board?
*+daysleeperke*
I used to have one. The picture was the best PS2 picture I've seen, but I found there was a bit of lag which I found very off putting. Have you had the same problem ???
I might get one of these and preform micro soldering motherboard repair. The only thing I need to find now is a schematic. I also know how to recover data, so getting a new hard drive would be no problem. Thank you for sharing this video and letting people know about it like me.
No problem!
Hey Adam. I'm a frequent watcher and appreciate your content. I just want to know as to what your thoughts are on the NES Classic edition?
Honestly, I don't care about it.
@AdamKoralik mine works but the static its because its in dvr channel mode I think. When I got mine I experienced the same thing until I plugged in a controller and got to exit that mode into the main menu mode.
I can't help but call the PS1 a PSX still, due to the excitement I had back in 91', after reading an EGM magazine which had the announcement. Not to mention EGM kept referring to it as PSX.
I know that before release, videogame magazines were calling the upcoming machine a PSX. Gamers did not like the proposed name of 'Playstation', as it sounded childish.
After a search, according to the wiki early adverts in the US used the name PSX too, but when the machine was eventually released Sony decided to go with the Playstation name anyway
Got a working one of the earlier models, the 5000, it's on its way. Bought it from a Japanese guy on ebay. It was a bit over 200 bucks, with everything including the PSX controller. I consider that a pretty good deal. Like you said, i have no doubt these will become unbelievably expensive, especially working ones. I'm not one to just look at the thing though, i'll definitely play FFX International on it, just gotta make sure to play on a cool temperature room!
200$ with shipping? i got mine from conbinijapan without controller for 90€ but the shipping was expensive (+40€ by surface mail)
FMCB would help you testing the PS2-side laser-assembley and run applications from different devices, even if your HDD is fried! ;-)
Awesome video Adam. I always thought the PSX was Sony's Developmental PS1 console. Or was that the Net Yaroze?
mtshark7 The Net Yaroze was the PlayStation 1's development kit. The name "PSX" was initially supposed to be the official name of the PS1, but is still used when referring to the console, despite this hardware's existence.
nice doorstop adam :)
You know they fucked up with when they had the controller ports on the back.
What they should have done at least was have the memory card slots on the back and the controller ports on the front.
But regardless the fact that these are so unreliable and have so many hardware failures, I think it'd be money better spent on buying a regular PS2 game system.
That's pretty cool that store owner gave it to you for free, even if it doesn't work.
You know have potentially a high resell value item you can sell later.
Perhaps if you get into contact with like an electrical engineer, he/she could repair it or maybe improve it?
Is like my same model 7100 i got that problem don't read disc, laser is hard to find
You should contact Ben Heck, he is here on CZcams, he just recently fixed up that SNES Playstation prototype, I bet he'd love to get this thing working. He has extensive knowledge of all the video game consoles, their chips, boards and parts since he frequently mods them.
Came close to buying one of these, of-course it was broken, but would've looked nice in my collection.
I remember seeing one of these at Best Camera in Sapporo and wondering why anyone would pay so much for a PS2 even with the extra features. If I had been silly enough to buy one no doubt the controller fiasco would have blown my fricken mind.
Epic shirt!
It's normal for the PSX to go to static after you first turn it on, if you press the select button it should bring up the XMB and you can use it normally from there. But if the TV is not receiving any picture from the PSX then yeah it's fucked.
I was thinking of grabbing one but didn't know if I could run backups on there
I salute you adam
I was always curious about this system, but I had no idea it was so broken.
If the video is cutting out just as the intro ends, it may be overheating, these are very good at overheating, as thy only have a small strip for vent. If you take off the sides, and try it may work.
Another way is the intro runs at 480p, but the menu runs at 480i. This could be your problem because after the intro, the resolution is changed and the cross media bar shows up. Maybe the TV you are using does not support the video mode it switches to (like when you reviewed ps2 to HDMI, but your TV doesn't support HDMI at 480i) You could try using different video ports on the console or a different display.
maybe
If you somehow figure out the issue with your PSX, you can install Free MC Boot onto your PSX, however it requires a special PSX version of Free MC Boot so you can not use regular Free MC Boot on it.
If you get Free MC Boot on it, you can install a patch to translate the XMB into English.
If we ever get a PlayStation 10, which ain't going to be anytime soon whatsoever, maybe it'll be called PSX, why not? X is 10 in Roman numbers
does anyone know how reinstall the firmware on a psx? cause my hdd is fucked up so i wanted to try to change it....is possible?
Hey Adam, it's a bit of a longshot, but have you thought of sending it to Ben Heckendorn from the Ben Heck Show? Granted it might sound a bit silly but I imagine that he would have the skills to either repair it or at least make some headway from the way it is now.
Hi Adam great video, do you prefer this or the Panasonic GameCube?
Cube.
+AdamKoralik thought so seems to have a superior build quality?
Yep, though the disc trays are problematic.
+AdamKoralik thanks for the reply! currently waiting to see if someone has one for sale local and will look out for this!
also I've watched all your videos and appreciate the unique perspective
Im looking forward on buying one of those in the future. Do you know if the console supports NTSC or Pal games?
Japanese region locked.
Oh Sorry, You just said it in the end of your Video :D I should watch till the end before i start commenting:D
i remember reading about this when it came out and thinking this is the most incredible piece of technology ever made
Incredibly defective perhaps.
lol i was easily wowed when I was 15
I'm pretty sure it works!
When you power it on it goes to tv directly after the boot screen. You just have to push the x on the remote or controller and the x bar will come up over the screen. That’s what mine does anyway.
Off topic but, do you know when the nest classic will be available for pre order for the US market?
Isn't it already?
+AdamKoralik amazon.co.uk has it but I don't know if it works here.
annotations / cards for the xbox and gamecube videos?
(edit no joke my video buffered at 1:57 )
do you have the Panasonic Gamecube/DVD player?
I assume you mean Panasonic, and yes I do.
AdamKoralik yup just fixed it lol. Do you have a video on it?
I show it in my GameCube recap video, but I haven't done one specifically on it.
I imagine the main problems on that thing are I/O controller chips and all the chips sending commands for all the crazy stuff. The thermal paste they used then was like glue...probably using newer thermal paste would solve most problems. The first PS3's suffer from that.
I have one, and it works... To a degree. It could record video (Though I think it was analog, so, yeah, that'd need a new thing.) The CD based games would still work, so I'm guessing it's a laser problem. Makes enough sense.
Picked mine up recently for $68 from ebay
This looks more like some sort of dev kit than an actual console. But as you said, it's a DVR first, game console second.
I think I've heard that the PSX also runs some formats of karaoke-discs, and maybe that's why it only got released in Japan? I might be wrong since you didn't mention it.
Lucky i am, got one from ebay working well
how did you clean it and reverse the yellow?
He probably used hydrogen peroxide. Great for restoring old plastics.
I've literally done multiple videos on the process.
Any plans of repairing it? If not, it's an awesome conversation piece.
I'd love to, but I lack the skill.
Ben Heck can help out. He was able to repair a Sony PlayStation/Super Nintendo
I have one. Can you PLEASE recommend an Australian power converter. Thank you a ton
2:46 I think you need to press a home button or something
Free McBoot works on it, so if the drive doesn't work it could be Ftp'd into and the hard drive could be utilized for something. The Static may be that it is on a channel for the DVR. Since they use different frequencies in Japan it wouldn't work on out tv signals. I have thought about importing one of these and tearing it down to see if I could repair it. it looks nice but they are a flawed design. They designed it to stand straight up with the disk slot up if I remember right as well as lay flat.Nice pick up either way.
he didnt even mention that there are like alot of versions of psx
I've always wanted a PSX.
I have seen a few of these and am thinking about buying one but they don't come with a power cable so I am wondering what power supply would be needed and if for example it used the same as the PS2 could I just use an American power supply or would that fry it?
Are you in the US?
I highly recommend not getting one of these by the way, they're built like garbage.
@@AdamKoralik yes I live in the USA I want to get it to I guess test my repair skills if that makes any sense I have done like basic stuff like rgb mods and things of that sort but nothing like this I more or less want to do this to prove my skills to myself if that makes any sense
@@bricethompson1922 Well, power wise, not an issue in the US.
But man, I've seen some serious professionals fail to get this thing working.
This is like saying "I got a pretty good grade in science class, so I think it's time I go out and split the atom."
It's.... probably too big of a challenge. But good luck!
@@AdamKoralik thanks Adam
Toyratt is so nice! He once gave me a box ps2 games for free and the ps2 for cheap so I could send to Brasil for one of my cousins who couldn’t even afford a PS2 but wanted one
It's so weird to hear “Sony” and “unreliable” in the same sentence, most of their products are usually very reliable.
Cough cough yellow light of death cough cough
Cough cough disc read error on ps2 cough cough
And this is coming from a PlayStation fan
@@rickyrosay33977 Both are nowhere near as common as the HDD issue from the PSX though.
EDIT: I should also mention that both of these problems are still fixable, while the HDD issue on the PSX simply kills the console itself.
I have one. Can you PLEASE recommend an Australian power converter. Thank you
i wonder if you could put a ssd in one of those
Adam can you do the jusco 30th anniversary n64 variant
ah note don't try using the rf on your tv as this is primarily used for cable connection
and I think the tarket was more the hotel industry than the home console market given the video passthrough
Sweet console
ayeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Finally!!!
hi Adam, I know you've said you might not care about fixing because something else might break, but you can try Ben Heck. he looks capable and is a good idea there for a video together :)
I have a friend here in Uruguay who has one of this PSX but The "DVD recorder" dont work lol
Interesting that even if a console fails there is always something that is born for further generations eg tomb raider on saturn, xmb on this device.
