    2 brilliant guys...
    Setup: pinch shoulders via scapula to take round out of upper back which neutralizes spine and allows pure rotation. See Axys golf by Eric Kaplan.
    Speed: some power work needed every 4 days to maintain or gain. Twice a week for 10-15 with driver and speed monitoring.
    Love recent 3 Releases purchase. Had my worst iron day, 1 GIR, after working on release 2 and pitching. Definitely need to separate long and short game.
    Marcus Bell at GRF could help with ground forces and reducing slide.

    Hi Dan, just want to say THANK YOU for this video. I’ve been golfing 11 months now and last 2 months or so really focusing on my short game.
    As a result have let my long game slip and really struggled with coming over the top, to the point I just couldn’t stop topping the ball.
    After watching this video I’d already had a round of golf booked the following day with friends, and the first time in my golfing hobby, I broke 100! I nearly broke 90 with a score of 92. Usually I’m hitting 125 shots.
    Since slowing down, getting back fully to the target and making sure the clubs behind me has been an absolute game changer.
    This was a video I didn’t know I needed. Thanks so much and looking forward to seeing how you get on with your long game!

    Hi Dan,
    Consider this: As you said, you tend to get your arms out early, away from your body and steep. Along with everything Jake said, experiment with this - Once we’re at “the top” of the swing it’s easy to shift left and simultaneously begin to rotate the upper body (since shifting left makes the pelvis rotate and likewise the upper body). This can lead to your arms getting out away from your body because stopping at the top and then shifting left leads to the arms wanting to separate from the body due to centrifugal force. If at the top of the swing you make a conscious effort to slightly “continue swinging back” with your arms/upper body at the same instant the shift/transition begins, the arms will stay close to your body and lower. It even makes the transition easier because weight closer to the body is easier to rotate than weight farther away. This, of course, is the concept of the lower body starting down while the upper body finishes the backswing. This might also help with your problem.

    Loved this video Dan! Love that you were vulnerable and shared your struggles with the long game - so refreshing and nice to see that a pro has some similar struggles.
    Re Jake's reply to 'how long will it take to ingrain this new movement', I've read a lot about this and the consensus seems to be:
    - around 3,000 repetitions of the new movement, so long as
    - you swing at about half your normal speed
    - your practice sessions are focused (no music or podcasts or distractions)
    - before each shot at the range, do 3-4 super slow rehearsals (these count as reps)
    - to start with, practice the new movement with a wedge or 9 iron, then after a while transition to an 8 or 7 iron. If you struggle with the 8 or 7 iron, move back to a wedge to get the movement right again
    - you have a check in with your coach after every 5 or so practice sessions to make sure you haven't reverted back to your old movement pattern
    If you're hitting 30 balls per day, with 3-4 rehearsals per shot (ie 100 reps per day), then you'll get the new movement in around 30 days.
    If you're practicing every second day, then you'll have it 60 days.
    Etc
    So in summary, for a new movement,
    - expect it to take 3 months for the average person
    - expect to hit one out of every 5 shots clean to begin with, then over time it will move to 3 out of 5 then 4 out of 5
    - swing at 50% speed max

    Love this 1 on 1. And so much of Dan's issuesare mine with my long game and most of the gold info has helped add value to the mysteries of the swing and how I can make small but valuable instant feedback and what to analyse knowing what I have learned from Jakes expert years of experiences. Now I have a reference point I can make small adjustments to my swing. Thanx Dan that was awesome.

    Honest and humble for all skill levels of golfers to comfortably interact with.
    The predicament is somewhat reminiscent of Dan Pohl’s, one of the the longest hitter on tour but lacked finesse, decided to work on his short games but allowed the elements to temporarily creep into, affect and weaken the ingrined full swings

    When you were talking about the downswing rotation w the left hip turning back, I was always taught that but seeing it here where your doing it in slow motion, for me, i had a lightbulb moment n correct if im wrong but its like your leaving the right hip where it is after you make your backwsing n on the downswing your turning your left hip back to match where your right is, I can see n understand now, how the club shallows automatically but also I can see more room for your arms n hands to drop the club into the right position at impact n it stops that early extension where there is no room to drop the club at impact.
    I have the same back swing so this video was great n I now have a different swing thought.
    From the top of my backswing, leave my right hip back, then turn my left hip back to level my right n just turn.

    Hi Dan. I'm a teaching pro here in Canada. You have helped me with my short game, so I am going to return the favour and help you with your long game. You say you are curving the ball too much? ..and you want to hit the ball straight ... here is the main key to straight ball flight.....
    **Whenever the shaft is level to the floor... it should be parallel to the target line.**
    It is no different in principle than that of the short game... you have to firstly work the tool properly. Yes. To have straight ball flight that flies straight to your target.... your path and clubface have to be zero'd out...or as close as you can to zero'd.
    This level/parallel orientation creates a swing that is on plane, AND that plane is aligned to your target line. This shaft orientation happens 5 times during a "model golf swing" (providing you get to parallel at the top of backswing) and will create a zero'd path
    You don't have to worry yourself with making changes with you body motions right now...other than to get the shaft in the 5 level/parallel orientation positions. Let your body motion/grip adjust to the intention of getting the shaft parallel to target whenever it is level to the floor. Once you are consistent with swinging the tool in the correct orientation... then you can work on body motion to increase power and improve strike etc. while maintaining the level/parallel rule.
    Everyone swings the club a little differently, so there is no one way for the body to do it's bit... but for the ball to go straight, consistently, the club path/face has to be zero'd. That is a non negotiable... It doesn't matter how the body achieves that.
    Here is a great drill that will provide instant feedback.
    **The Wall of Doom drill **
    Equip yourself with a 6 or 7 iron.
    Stand with your heels about 6-8 inches from a wall, where you can safely swing a club. Start doing this drill slowly and increase speed until you can do it at full swing speed.
    -Swing to the top without hitting the wall... then swing thru to your finish position without hitting the wall. ( keeping in mind the 5 times level/parallel concept. )
    OK Dan.. Give this a go, and you will be hitting it straight as a laser almost immediately. Cheers.

      You've penned down your explanation very well.
      While not all 5 but I'm conscious of the level position at takeaway and prior delivery. Sometimes, I also intentionally angle the level shaft position esp at delivery to curve the ball left or right when required. It works brilliantly. Even with my flippy release, my fairway percentage is close to 70%. However, its the pureness of strike that lets me down with a +/- on the yardage. I guess Dan's video here can help more with consistent strikes.

      ….well John Erickson talks about a 4:30 line where the club at third parallel is pointed at 4:30 where the target line is 3:00. Your first few sentences say when the club is level with ground that it should be pointing at 3:00. How could one hit from inside from 3:00 on third parallel?? …😳

      @@cdunne1620 You are not hitting from the inside though . You are hitting down the line at 3 oclock. ... the clubhead path into the ball will follow where that shaft is pointing at third parallel, and releasing it at the target (9 oclock) ...if your intention is hitting a straight ball. It is a falsehood that it is "impossible" to do consistently. It is no more difficult to learn how to do than learning how to hit consistently from say 3* from the inside with a 1.5 closed face. to hit a little draw. I would even claim it is easier to teach someone to hit a straight ball consistently, than it is to teach them to hit a 5 yard draw consistently. It's all about training to do it.

    Hi D, Rob here from australia, tennis coach 37 years, golf for fun 7 handicap, from a coaching perspective it's amazing how we can get so sophisticated in our thinking and overlook the simple.
    It seems to me grip wise, if you persevere with the neutral grip 2 knuckles, which I would consider not weak but very standard, your flippy release will soon calm down or quiet down, that alone would stop so much left, right dispersion, hold on right, flip will go left, Nicklaus idea of reflexive wrists. Just my idea obviously, all the best.

    Major props for a coach to get lessons. A suggestion is just mention the accuracy problem and skip the self diagnosis, which would cloud the judgement of the coach who’s going to help you.

    A lot of this very familiar! I learnt from Hogan's book and had a flatter/deeper/weaker grip swing. As my hcp went low and I started competing I went in search of speed - stronger grip more wrist hinge/more speed /more vertical backswing. Really hasn't done me much good and such variable strikes. I'd rather go back to more what you are doing here and stay mindful of not getting to flat again- at least then I can strike the ball. Really great to see you getting a lesson. Very insightful!

    What a great video! All the same issues I am dealing with with rolling forearm takeaways, steep and early extension, two way miss and thin shots. Love the drills and the simplicity of how to feel them. Great to watch a lesson with a student who has such insightful questions as he is a teacher himself. I think the pro sendr device might be a good addition to maintain that right wrist extension he wanted and then just rotate through. Will watch this again soon, putting some of these drills into practice tomorrow. I am guilty donthe racking balls at the range the the 5 balls per swing thought suggestion is great! Cent wait for the followup video

    i could have said your introduction word for word. sounds like my swing. Something that has stuck with me from my coach is what you want to do with the ball will dictate the grip, stance, alignment & swing plane.
    I know you said you down want a big reset but I think you need an iron pre shot routine based on what flight you want to see the ball take.
    No point in asking if a certain grip is ok, get a good pre shot routine
    I'm surprised he just jumped into swing mechanics instead of how you should set up

    Dan, this is for you and for Jake: If you're doing what he taught and you see the ball start straight at your target, but then curve left more and more, what's the likely cause and what can you tinker with to fix that?

    Hi Dan, hope you’re keeping well?.
    I have hip slide issues, two thoughts that are helping my game. ‘Exaggerated feeling like swinging left 45 deg to target on through swing, face control as a fade. Also a feeling of the left leg pushing from the ground/ foot away from target into the hip socket helps my old hips turn and restricts my slide. Good luck with the long game. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. 👍

    I have finally come to the conclusion after years of playing that you need a different swing for every aspect . You need a pitching swing , Iron swing and driver swing . Then putting etc . LOL

    Is it worth having different grips (the runner bit on the club, not the hands) for wedges versus long game clubs... some different texture or size or feel which might trigger different mechanics?

    Great lesson! Love Dans short game lesson. Funny enough, I was thinking the other day if any of Dans short game pointers translate to the full swing? Minus the wrist releases 2 and 3? For some reason, the laid off right hand feel/position at the top of the backswing, my brain thinks this is a moment of weakness and I can't seem to move past this. But a lot of teachers seem to emphasize this.

    Great video, I’m a good driver of the golf ball and hit solid irons but I struggle tremendously with lob shots and release 3 it feels counterintuitive if that makes any sense! Thanks Dan

    I dropped a comment to you a few months ago, about downward pressure at set up,and your response was not becoming of a great teaching pro, after hearing you talking and your understanding of basic movement has made more sense to me about your response to my comment. At this time i am refraining from mentioning the greats i learned from in short game,because this video speaks volumes.played at woburn in the BRITISH in the late 80s and early 90s Think you were still at school then. ahhahahaha THE STANDARD OF SHORT GAME ON TOUR IS NOT AS GOOD AS IN MY DAYS.....FACT!

      I can’t answer all messages myself (this one is from me) as I get thousands every day. And I totally agree, short game isn’t as good as the 80’s and 90’s. I think the ball has something to do with it and prolific use of lob wedges.

      @@DanGrieveGolf Thanks for your kind reply, for sure i will get in touch. i will clarify my cryptic comments. hahaha Tiger and collin Morikawa were doing a short game session on you tube, Tiger mentioned always working the ball,collin asked how many people does Tiger know who does that, he said Ole and Seve thats what i mean about skill level,to me its a basic of short game. just a little insight into my mind set.

    Wow, that was hard to watch.
    This was a pretty tough tug-o-war between the student and teacher.
    If this was in person, there would be no way he'd let his student continue to make so many swings while he's speaking.
    The student wouldn't stop hitting balls and the teacher was unable to slow him down. He had no choice, but to match him with energy and more information.

    I've actually experimented with release 2 on my driver and it hits BOMBS. But it's a little high and floaty so I don't use it on the course all the time however I think the demonization of "flippy" golf swings is hurting too many players

    Kinda funny that the flip release could have the same fix that Dan uses with his students: make sure to turn through impact and into the follow through!

    Dan I am interested in your experience in doing on-line coaching. I have never done it but I am thinking of changing coach which opens up the possibility of on-line coaching. I would really appreciate your advice.

    Then I absolutely love your short game stuff! Jake does make a lot of really good points here as well. It seems to me that just like when you educate golfers with the short game I think the only thing that's really kind of missing in your brain instead of all what your hips are doing in your shoulders and sinking up in your release and all this other stuff I honestly think you have to learn about your feet. I mean specifically! Where are you loading and unloading your feet and how are you loading and unloading your feet. I legitimately think that would solve the majority of your issues!

      @@pjpredhomme7699 what I mean is how are you using the ground! which part of your feet is absorbing the weight which direction are your feet pushing or pulling? it's a very significant piece of the puzzle in the golf swing. Definitely worth your time to learn that
