One of my biggest problem is that, if I start studying the night before the exam, since there is no time left I just HAVE TO focus and do things super fast. But if i start a lot earlier, than i just keep gettting distracted by literally everything and the time I spent the learn the same amount thing at least doubles up comparing to the amount I'd do at the last minute. If only I can study THAT focused before-hand, my life would be a lot better.

yeah, and unfortunately there's no easy fix for this because putting yourself in an environment that's not distracting is not only hard, but is predicated on the idea that you won't be distracted when scheduling it and won't procrastinate on your way there, thus just moving the problem and not solving it

An extension of this that I really like is the the idea that you can handle anything -- anything -- for ten seconds. Even if it's literal torture, you can handle it for just ten seconds. And then at the end of those ten seconds, you can handle it for just ten more seconds. And then keep doing that until the job is done.

One strategy that helped me in the past, was making multiple theme based to-do-lists (that are due in the next few weeks) and decide at the beginning of the weeks, which of them to tackle this week (categorized in top priority/ priority and work/personal tasks). That just shrinks down the to-do-list drastically. Also for not so important tasks: Instead of planning a specific time for a specific task, I just plan "to-do-time" and choose a to-do from the list. That only works if the tasks aren't urgent and none of the tasks is especially unpleasant.

yeah procrastination can be a single act, he says it's not, but it literally is. It's not a medical term it's an everyday English word and something everyone does
chronic procrastination... better check out adult ADHD symptoms and just see
ADHDers have time blindness and a lot of difficulty assigning weight and priority to tasks, they also end up interrupting themselves in the middle of a task and going off to do something else, because, apart from super urgent things, everything *feels* equally important and you end up doing 10% of 100 things, which is especially bad because you are extra bad at task-switching because that's an executive function too
Also you don't get to "relax afterwards with the satisfaction that you did what you needed to do" because you don't get that satisfaction to begin with and also you always take on too much or you left too much so there's no relaxing afterwards because there's always more to do

Something I've been doing for school which has really helped is a 10-5-10 routine.
Every day, it doesn't matter when, set aside half an hour. Study for 10 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, and study for another 10 minutes. If you feel like you can do more, rest 5 and study 10 more. And repeat until you find a good place to stop, or until you get tired. After those initial 2 sessions, you would be surprised how much more you can do with that momentum. And even if you only do two, you can cover a _lot_ of ground between exams.
And using those 5 minutes to do something like pick up a few clothes or do a couple of sit-ups is super helpful in getting other essential tasks done at the same time, while still telling your brain that you're taking a break from the _actual_ chore at hand. Once you're in the mindset of studying, nothing else actually feels like a chore, because it's not what you're 'doing' right now.
The best part: This can be adapted to suit literally anything you need to do.

As we humans tend to be creatures of habit, the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. Like another comments I've read, I would set out to do a task early, and get easily distracted, or have writer's block. I have either been very lucky that my procrastination has yielded good grades, or I actually do perform better under pressure. I have no idea how to rationalize it, but I have been unable to break this habit because the results are still favorable.

ADHD and Bipolar here and as such, procrastination is a huge problem, despite hyperactivity making up for some of it at the expense of my health. 'Banging things out' early to then guilelessly enjoy pleasures is intrinsically motivating. During Covid, focusing on my new long-term goals and vision for my life helps motivate me to grind through the day-to-day tasks. I hope that Covid can bring inspiration to re-evaluate quality of life and what we can do to to achieve those visions.

hi, I just discovered you channel and it's pretty cool, so thank you very much! For my experience of experienced procrastinator, I'd say that planning is a great part of avoiding procrastinating. The night before, setting goals for the day ahead is very important, deciding in advance that I am gonna do certain things instead of doing others (or none at all) helps me get things done. And the reward is the satisfaction of having done those task, and taking them off the to-do list. Also if you are your own boss, and work from home, like me, please get dressed, that helps a lot. And last is having a well set routine, like waking up at the same time everyday, then walk the dog, then exercise, then have breakfast and shower, and then you can finally start working because everything else is out of the way. Also keep your phone out of the way, and put on some music or a podcast. I mean, it works for me, most of the time ;)

One thing that helps with the last point of "be aware of what you're doing/be your own mother" is journaling. I use a home-made variant of CGPGrey's Theme Journal (he has a really good video on what that entails) where I write about what I did that day, set 3-5 goals for tomorrow (as big as cleaning entire rooms and as small as having a shower, doesn't matter.), and I have a page where I keep track of things I try to do every day.
I moved into my current place about 5 years ago, and was pretty depressed at the time. I spent about 4 of those years coasting through life doing just enough housework to not poison myself with the kitchen or trip over stuff going from bed to computer. Then I started journalling, which I was going to do starting 2022 but didn't actually get set up until mid April. Yes, that's how bad my procrastination habit was.
Within a month of starting that, setting goals as tiny as "spend 10 minutes sorting stuff on the floor" I had my computer room, bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms cleaner than they had been since maybe a month after I'd moved in, I'd gotten help for the back pain that had been bugging me for years, and I am, in general, far more together than I've been since I was in university, and probably more than that.

I’m not sure how much the following idea is substantiated by evidence and data, but anecdotally it resonates with me:
Arousal level. Sometimes I can’t will myself to perform a task without the high stress to stimulate me to do it. So I will push the task off until I’m closer to the deadline. The task could be big or small. And this behavioral pattern has been supported by operant conditioning because a majority of the time I end up finishing the task and doing well.
How have I tried to change this? Mindfully spend more time on what is required of me for the task. Set internal deadlines for the assignment (similar to the 2 minute rule) and having others hold me accountable

Haha thanks so much for the video. Everytime I procrastinate, I will watch this to stop. As a psychology grad student, I'm well aware when and why I procrastinate. However, as mentioned in the video it is really hard to change habits even when you know that they harm you. I have some metacognitive strategies (or say cognitive strategies) to cope with it. The moment I realize that I delay my responsibilities for nonsense, I remove the nonsense where I cannot reach it before I finish whatever I have to do. What is removing? For example, I'm playing Football Manager and I love playing it. Thus, it is really hard for me to choose anything over it. I send copies of my save files to a friend, delete my own copies and tell her not to send them back before I send my freshly written proposal for exchange. So, my desire to play football manager becomes a reward for writing my proposal. By doing so, not only I remove the game from my sight, I also use it as means of extra motivation to do what I normally don't like to do. Cheers =)

I find that many times the longer I wait to accomplish certain activities, the better I eventually perform at them. This is especially true in making important decisions or in creative projects. Without actually consciously thinking about them, my sub-conscience mind tends to figure things out in for the better in time, eventually arriving at a sort of "viola" moment.
Of course, it means I do lots of things at the eleventh hour and finish just in the nick of time. But, in the end I tend to feel my results are almost always better than they would have been had I not procrastinated, and instead jumped immediately into the task.

Interesting because I've always though that I was a master procrastinator but after watching this video, I realize that I'm not.
I tend to be extremely reactive on things that HAS to be done. For exemple, I can't stand to leave the dishes undone.
In fact, it's borderline the other way around, sometimes I start doing it as I finish eating because I just want to be done with it asap.
Ironicaly, one thing that I tend to procrastinate about are social medias. I have a lot of friends who ask me to leave more comments on their Facebook, Instagram or whatever pages but I just find that being a massive waste of time so, yeah, I procrastinate those things...

7:45 How to Stop Procrastinating Today
8:00 1. Take care of your to-do list first, then relax and enjoy your 'guilty pleasures'.
8:25 2. Make your tasks seem more pleasant.
8:55 3. Break down your big project into smaller tasks. Make your initial task a two-minute activity.
9:30 4. Make temptations more inconvenient.
10:03 5. Make yourself aware of your behavior. Ask yourself 'is what I am doing right now my priority?'
Just a reminder to subscribe, I just did!

And actually, some you are just worthless. So, sit back, relax, and just let it go...let it... I should write a song about that...”Sit back, relax and...quit” 🎵 🎶

The self conditioning sometimes is useful. Counting down from 5 and you have to start doing the thing at 1. You start with things you have no trouble with and make it a habit and then slowly add things you have a harder time starting.

Sometimes you have to count out loud because it can help break the brain idle mode process. Sometimes just singing out loud our talking yourself through in of itself will get your brain into a more active mode making it easier to get going. (you can talk to your pet if that helps or a stuffed animal)

I’m a perfectionist person who loves to work under pressure if i don’t have LOAD OF WORK AND ONE DAY TO DO THEM ALL I won’t do them whatsoever. I sometimes be writing an essay and if I don’t like what I’m writing i just leave the paper till the last day and start stressing out because I didn’t do it before

How would I know if my personality disorder puts me on the autism spectrum? Are they often mistaken for one another? And what is the rate of comorbidity between these conditions?

Hmm for me I don’t always think it’s procrastination.. my body just really wants to rest.. my body recently has been going through a lot of sensory information.. and stress so the next day I just feel exhausted.. and want to treat myself to some relax times.. but I also put some priorities over others like my brain was like “hey don’t you want to exercise, JUST DO IT!” and I do it but my aunt gets frustrated coz I haven’t yet cleaned the bench or locked the door..
