only after learning about "The Merchant of Venice" you'll realise that the quote: "When you're a kid, you'll like the heroes, But as you grow up, you'll feel the villians" is really applicable.
He and Portia is the main reason for the for making this play very good( and meaningful-it is a Christian play so chiristans will be able to understand it well)
This play is Shylock. Without Shylock it would be a boring nothing. 'Bad' Shylock is tricked by the 'good Venicians' who took his fortune using a fake judge-lawyer (Portia). SHYLOCK ROCKS! 2nd best Shakespeare's play (with Hamlet being the Best)
Shylock became money thristy because of the Christian cruelty, anyway he could be anything thristy unless he actually harmed the others first hand. Here he was simply returning the years of oppression , that too unsuccessfully
I just don't get how can one not shed blood while cutting flesh from the body When it is mentioned that a pound of flesh has to be taken Obviously blood will be shed There's no need to mention it in the condition
Fact is shylock most likely caused all business ventures to fail for Antonio so that Antonio would not be able to return what he borrowed on time..he himself asks for justice but he tampered with lawful warnings that Antonio would have made ro repay him. It was wrong of Antonio to spit on the jew but Shylock doesn't deserve our pity
Shakespeare lived in ENGLAND after all the Jewish people who financed the English Kings were expelled and the Kings defaulted on their payments Shakespeare may not ever have met a Jew So I think he would have had more MERCY to the good hardworking Shylock if he had actually met and known some of the TERRIBLE TREATMENT OF THE JEWISH PEOPLES in England and just about everywhere Still an utterly AMAZING PLAY and a TREMENDOUS PERFORMANCE by this bunch of real actors A HUGE THANK YOU SHAKESPEARE AND THIS GREAT TEAM
I got a plot hole , what if shylock asked the pound of flesh to be given to him ? Why should he take it by his hand ? Shouldn't the law give him his right ? Hmmn?
I believe the contract specifically states that if he cannot be repaid then "Shylock has the liberty to take one pound of flesh" the key term is "take" connected to Shylock as the subject of the clause
@Moa_G Not a big enough one to ruin the story, at least not to me. They're already using the language of the contract in extremely literal terms (like only taking flesh and not a drop of blood to be spilled) and in their effort to twist it against Shylock they would enforce that Shylock must take it himself
@@pamnob2259 yes she did tricked Shylock but more importantly, the way she did it was through deception. She dosen't work in the judiciary, she's not a lawyer. She used her personal relationship with powerful people to act as if she was a lawyer. I don't remember the name but her friend wrote her a letter of recommendation and only because of that she was allowed to interrogate Shylock. If Portia and her friend would have been caught they would serve even worse punishment than Shylock. Her friend's license should have also been taken. It's called cheating, deception, hypocrisy. She's a hypocrite and so are the people who helped her in this sick plan.
The first time I saw this movie I thought that Shylocks lines had been edited in some way for Pacino because when he spoke it sounded so much more natural and organic than when the other actors spoke. Wonderful actors but they sounded stilted compared to Pacino. I actually checked the script and there were, of course, no editing. Pacino is just an extremely talented actor!
Shylock was never the villain. He is but a product of his environment. He was an honest hard working man under unbearable, racist conditions, yet he still thrived to the extent that his oppressors approached him for help. They signed a contract and borrowed his money. In addition, there is that theme of making the Jews look bad in order to make the Christians better. The "....quality of mercy..." speech by Portia is a clear indication of the Christians trying to seem more civilized than the Jews. When that fails - the ABUSE POWER - they cheat and lie. They get hard and dirty - by using a fake lawyer to get out of trouble. The entire court room scene and verdict is a shambles. It makes the Christians liars and to me, the REAL villains!
