  • Fear the Walking Dead is a show that started out with a very compelling story, following Nick Clark and Madison Clark along their journey at the start of the virus. Eventually, however, it fell significantly downhill.
In this video, we will be discussing the rise and inevitable fall of Fear the Walking Dead. There were a few major mistakes made that led to the show losing its identity in its entirety, which is what I will be discussing.
If you like this video about FTWD, please be sure to give it a like rating so we can share it with more people and subscribe for more Fear updates as we get closer to Fear the Walking Dead Season 8!

    To clear some things up:
Madison was the set main protagonist, Nick and Alicia were the deuteragonists (like the carl to madison's rick).
Dave Erickson, the showrunner of s1-3, had a 7 season plan, showing Madison's decent into a villain, hed wanted to show how a normal person could become someone like the Governor, or Negan. His plan was to have Nick shoot Madison in the finale season after a long feud between the characters, which we could see start to be set up in season 3 (The otto family was meant to mirror the Clark family, how madison killed troy who is nick's parallel and how Nick shot Otto who is Madison's parallel)
When Scott Gimple was fired from his position as showrunner on the main twd show (the fans made a petition after he killed off Carl's actor bc he didnt want to pay him more now that he was 18) the TWD promoted him to executive producer of the Walking Dead Franchise, he then fired Dave Erickson on FearTWD and hired Ian and Andrew (The dave and dan of twd basically) and they just drove the show into the dirt.
Scott Gimple had Morgan crossover because he was his favorite character and wanted to give him a bigger role in the TWDU. Kim Dickons did not want to leave FearTWD but she was fired. And once she was fired and Frank Dillane saw the shows new direction, he finally decided to leave. Dave Erickson killed off Troy Otto in season 3 as well because he was afraid the new writers wouldn't understand his character and ruin him like they did to most of the characters, so he had him killed early in season 3, originally he was meant to live on for a couple more seasons. Same reason why Crazy Dog and Qaletaqa walker were written off the show.

Nick the quirky druggie, Madison the wooden mom, Alicia the sibling trying to grow up without College, Travis and his entire family dynamic. It was so different from TWD but also drew so many correlations. Great vid man 1-3 are classics now

Nicks death was the final straw for me. Everything was fine up until Season 4. I was exited to see what would happen after the Season 3 finale, the people who used to come over to our house when TWD dead was at it's peak even started coming over to watch Fear during season 3. However all our enthusiasm was killed after the awkward and unexplained time jump after season 3. We all felt like we missed an entire season that should've taken place between 3 and 4. You mentioned Travis' death being a big deal breaker but I didn't think so personally, nor does anyone I've talked to. We all kinda feel like his character was out of place after his son died anyway. Even Madison seemed to be over him by the time they got to he Hotel.
I gave up on the show after Nick died, people would still come over to my parents house to watch the rest of the season, but the Season 4 finale was the last time. They wanted to build a franchise around TWD and they failed. No one I know watches or even cares about this garbage Universe anymore.

Alicia´s character was so mistreated since the "Morgan and friends show" started until the point she decided to leave for good. I don´t understand why the writers insisted for soo long with introducing disposable plain characters like Rabbi, Wendell, Sarah, Logan and so so so many others. Just keeping Morgan, Madison and Alycia alongside with Strand and Daniel with a decent development would have been enough to have a much better show, especially considering how good Ericsson´s seasons were.

The show wouldn’t have been different if Frank Dillane had stayed because Morgan was still coming over no matter what. He left because of all the changes and that’s not what he signed up for. They planned on making Nick and Alicia full on Morgan acolytes and he just wasn’t interested in doing that and I don’t blame him. Even the eight episodes he was forced to work from in season 4 must’ve been a gut punch to him after what he’d worked with before.
And season 3 easily rivalled some of the better TWD seasons IMO. I remember telling people who weren’t watching it how much I preferred it to the main series at the time.

There are so so so many seeds planted that allude to this:
      - Madison’s controlling nature
      - Madison severing the head of her enemy and using it as a message
      - Madison trying to make Alicia feel smaller and under her control
      -Nick walking with the dead.
Strands characters story would have ended with him the character who was initially the most morally questionable stepping in to protect Madison’s kids from her and dying.
Nick vs Madison was the end goal with Madison prevailing which would have fully broken Alicia. They were strong together and losing nick would have been what made Alicia into the timid broken version of her that would be Lydia when we meet Lydia in TWD

  • @unnamedproject

I remember when teh show began it was marketed as "before the walking dead" and "how the world came to an end". Well it turns out that I took like 3 episodes to have the world overrun by zombies and become regular TWD but with another characters.
This could have easily be a great miniseries showing how it all really started with the first confirmed zombie cases, panic breaking out, chaos and ending with the overrun of the big cities. But they just turned it in TWD with other characters.

I have to disagree when you say Alicia wasn’t the strongest of characters. Near the end of season 2 she was getting good footing and definitely peaked in season 3 when she had to stand up in a major leadership role and make the tough calls.
Alicia was already well liked going into season 4. And no I don’t believe it’s Frank Dillanes fault either, there was so much already wrong prior to him wanting to leave.
AMC axed Erickson as the lead man writer prior to season three being finished because they were too stupid to rush and get anything to boost ratings and hired hack writers. By season 4, the new writers had this rebooted story for it and completely devolving the main characters from their already established characters without even trying to continue where season 3 left off on the biggest cliffhanger. They took out any proper storytelling and added lots of mediocre slop into it to also include their own shitty passion project
It was the decision to axe Kim Dickens with all the other changes made that led Frank Dillane leave. I don’t blame him, at least he got to leave before they ruined his character even more.

I agree with you. I loved Fear the Walking Dead seasons 1-3. I enjoyed the different perspective and thought it could go places. It was just different enough and similar enough to make it brilliant. Then the show took a hard left and I lost interest as fast as Nick died. Although to be honest, I knew the show was going to go nowhere good once Travis died. I just had a feeling things would never be the same after that. Some shows can survive the core cast dying and some quickly lose focus. Season three was great even after Travis, but I knew something spectacular would have to take place to keep it going to survive all the events of the third season. In my opinion, it never recovered. Morgan didn't save the show. None of the other cross-over characters saved the show and even bringing Madison back didn't save the show because they made the ridiculous choice to kill Alicia right before Madison came back. Just Morgan being able to tie Madison to Alicia was not enough payoff for Madison's return. As a screenwriter and author myself, there were so many odd writing choices that it felt like a newbie writer was writing the entire show after season 3. Basic storytelling/story structure got lost after Nick left and it shows.

Personally for me, FTWD failed in season 1 when it was supposed to show us the start of the outbreak and what those early weeks / months looked like when Rick was asleep in the hospital.
The show did that.....for about a day or two. Just as the national guard arrives and things start to get super interesting there is a time skip of a few a weeks and bang. The entire premise of the show is gone for me.
From that point onwards, we were basically just in yet another post-apocalyptic show. FTWD became nothing more than a worse version of the main show.

I wish the 1st season didn't skip much of the fall as I'd have liked to have seen more of societies reaction & chaos in the city... I like how Travis died. It's a game of thrones level death where any main character can die at any moment, which was very true to that world, especially in the early days where everything was still new & crazy dangerous. There was no way Alicia could've saved him as he'd been bitten in the pit or shot through the stomach.

The great thing about Fear seasons 1-3 was every main character death moved the plot forward in a significant way, that’s how Game of Thrones is too actually, nothing is just for shock value if you consider what each one changes in the story going forward, it always has consequences. Kirkman’s Walking Dead however uses death very very differently, deliberately, but it also meanders at times imo.

I think Travis was always meant to die, just not this early. Like Travis would have had more development with this new “darkness” he’d embraced, but he’d always have this good heart/nature in contrast to Madison’s strategic ruthlessness/coldness. We would see more of him being one of her biggest anchors to keep her humanity/compassion. He would almost be like her good natured brute. Like he would do the more savage and brutal killings with his hands while Madison worked behind the scenes. And then near the end of one of the seasons, he would have been killed and we would have now seen his entire arc to full completion and starting Madison’s other side of her; Negan side of her.

Its wild and sad to think about, because for those who didn't know troy wasn't supposed to die in season 3 and was supposed to become a huge part of the overall story as kind of like a antagonist who pushes against Madison and what she was becoming or well was supposed to become (Erickson said in his original plan Madison was going to end up leading the proctors and basically being fears Negan) and the assumed story was troy would have a redemption arc and would become part of the main group and him and nick would be best friends(maybe more it was speculated) and whatever would happen, but by the end of season 5 or 6 (sense the actors were only signed on for 7 seasons) Madison would do something that would go to far and troy would speak out against her and she would kill troy in front of nick making the group realize Madison is to far gone and the final season or 2 would've been her kids and our group fighting against her as the villain and it would end with nick killing her. Was the basic plot idea Erickson said he had for the show. Which is absolutely DEVISTATING, because amc killed this plan and Erickson's fear in the middle of season three allowing him to finish his season then he would be replaced and there would be a creative overhaul for season 4 and onward. Which is why troy is killed because Erikson didn't want any of the new writers using one of his favorite characters he created and why the other Clarks and Strand escaped but Nick was written to be left at the damn as kind of an ambiguous Nick is gone but is he really. Which is why Nick dies so early in season 4 because when it was announced that Erickson was fired all of the actors were given a chance to break there contracts and the two that did were nicks actor and Ofeilias actor which is why Ofeilia dies in season 3 and why Nick dies early in season 4. Sad to think of what could've been . A fear reboot headed by Erickson picking up like halfway through season 3 would be amazing, but instead were going to keep getting spin off from the main show that no one cares about. Just thought I'd share!

After watching this video and reading the comments, I see that my hypothesis is true: everyone began lambasting this show only after Nick and Madison died. Before that, everyone was on board with what Chambliss & Goldberg were doing, but after that, they began to mercilessly criticize every creative decision they made, down to the last line of dialogue. It’s not about bad writing. It’s because the fans are mad at Ian and Andrew for killing off the two main characters, and the angry fans will continue punish them for it until their last dying breath or until they get over it.

    great take Jerry
i watched the first couple seasons of TWD when they came out, and then sort of forgot about it. fast forward to a few months ago, looking for something to watch and remember TWD.
had never heard of FOTWD, decided to watch the entire thing as it was released. i hadnt heard anything at all about this IP except for the 'coral' memes years ago. so i was in a pretty isolated bubble going into this...
so i watch a bunch of TWD, then flip over to FOTWD as each episode would have been aired originally.
the first three seasons, im like digging some of the things, marvelling a bit at how much ground they cover, a bit slow to start but after a while you see the payoff in character building. tldr, diggin the show.
then season 4 hits. i was really enjoying TWD, and I blazed through the first 3 seasons of FOTWD..... then it just became hard to watch. i got to episode 12 of season 4 and im like... if they liked morgan so much, why didnt they spin him off into his own thing instead of hijacking this one???
my take on it is that they wanted to force fans of TWD to latch on to FOTWD, i put up with s4 so long because i wanted to be able to see TWD unfold as it would have been originally experienced, the show writers play with that pressure by having morgan say a few times that hes going back to virginia, so i kept watching. if that hadnt been there, i would have turned it off sooner, but i wanted to keep the timeline intact for the next season of TWD....
i got to the point where im like, this is an entirely different show, why am i watching this? and its annoying to have the enjoyment of TWD being the rope that held me hostage.
normally, i would keep watching just to see the whole thing and laugh at the poor execution, but FOTWD was just bad.
so im writing to thank you for your video, more specifically the moment where you start to 'get angry' and point your finger... reminded me so much of my breaking point with the show that i wanted to say thanks and give appreciation for your take.
and double also, for going through the entire thing so i can get the cole's notes of it and just get back to TWD. you walked so others like me could run.... fast and far away hahah
    thanks Jerry, keep it up!

I loved following the Clark family, Travis & Daniel, etc. The tension between Travis's original family vs his new gf/wife & her family. Chris got on my nerves, but it serves the storyline. Nick's situation struck a cord with me personally as an opioid addict in recovery, how he was in withdrawals, & his mom helped him, etc. It was unique & realistic. It stood on it's own with a different perspective! Proctor John would've been a great villain. Anyone who's seen that actor in SOA or Mayans knows that Loved the S1-S3. The new characters in S3 were great from the Ottos to Walker & Crazy dog? Then BAM. Mostly trash after first couple of eps in S4. I’ll admit, I lost interest with Fear the Walking Dead when they were catching up with the main Walking Dead timeline, but I still wish the show was mainly about the Clarks and end with the Clarks with leaving it like 3 seasons and for Morgan and the new additional characters I wish was a different spin-off. When Morgan joined, it felt like a different show and characters like Alicia and Strand were more like inserts. I’m more on for Morgan being a main character and I loved John and Al, but couldn’t see them a part of the Fear Of the Walking Dead, so I pretend it’s not Fear to get through it and it worked decent. Though the illusion wore off when the OG Fear characters appear.

The rise and fall of the entire Walking Dead franchise comes down to several decisions by AMC; to wit, canning great showrunners (for the crime of wanting more money to do their shows right) and hiring, frankly, bad writers to run the entire franchise. Consider: on the main series, the show went to shit as soon as Darabont was out and Gimple was promoted to showrunner. On FTWD, the show went to shit as soon as Gimple was promoted (again) to become the TWDU Czar and he, in turn, promoted Goldberg and Chambliss from staff writers to showrunners. Going back through both TWD and FTWD, what we see is that Gimple, Goldberg and Chambliss wrote some pretty decent individual episodes. But they have shown - time and time again - to be completely ineffectual in running the franchise and breaking an entire season of television, which is a different exercise than breaking or writing a single episode. It's the same reason some people never become generals in the armed forces. Some people are good at leading a battalion, but fall apart completely when they are expected to lead a division or army. All three of them suffer from a fatal writer's flaw. There is an old saying among screenwriters and television writers that asking "what if..." is a great way to inspire a story. But Gimple, Goldberg and Chambliss seem more interested in asking the question "wouldn't it be cool if..." instead, which is why we get half thought-through story lines, bad storylines, recycled storylines, bad dialogue, terribly developed characters (when they are developed at all). The best example of this from Gimple as the franchise czar is the World Beyond series and the Tales series. Complete trash that never should have been made. But then, his incompetence while overseeing the incompetence of Goldberg and Chambliss on FTWD, and it becomes the blind leading the blind. The series - the entire franchise, in fact - suffers from tremendous bloat. And it's because these three aren't even fans of their respective shows or the franchise, otherwise they would see these flaws and fix them (instead of going on Talking Dead or to Comic Con and trying to defend and justify their creative decisions).

so at season 4 they changed showrunners. the new show runners had no ambition to continue what kirkman and erickson had started so they just rebooted it and made it the morgan show. amc was always going to crossover morgan because they wanted fears views to go up and boy did they ever. season four’s premiere is still one of the highest watched episodes of the series but the rating as and views quickly started going down as the season progressed and fans realized this was not the same fear the walking dead anymore. i also don’t think the show would have stayed good even if nicks actor stayed on. the writing and story was going to be bad anyway. in fact they probably would have ruined nicks character tbh. the people to blame are the new show runners to be honest. it was there idea to ignore what came before and just completely change the course of the story. if dave erickson never left after season 3 this show could have been something truly special.

Also I'm leaving another comment here, when actors want to leave shows there is absolutely no reason for them to be killed off, There is no reason after the little plot that happened with Morgan, nick couldn't have left to go on a solo journey of rediscovering who he was because he didn't like what he became leaving to go on journey of self discovery, in turn letting the actor leave but also leaving returning opportunities open down the line, and also letting the fans be like, ok eventually he'll be back instead of being like, the first 3 seasons that you absolutely loved this character and its publicly known this season is a creative overhaul ???? Booom your favorite character THE LEAD OF THE SHOW is dead and boom so is the other lead Madison. They should have never killed off madison, and they should've wrote that nick just leaves on a spiritual solo journey.

I think fear the walking dead played it safe compared to the original. I know one of the main reasons why I was hooked on the main show was because I knew nobody was safe and shocking surprises was going to happen and someone was going to die (suprise) and how they died (shock) made the show that much more interesting, regardless of how much I didn't want them to die and they wrote the story right because I cared about the character and didn't realize how much until the died. But fear yeah some characters will killed off but I can't shake the feeling that the character was written just for that purpose and as I watched them I can tell that when they wrote the character, they wrote them with there death in mind instead of writing them in with the belief that they would survive the whole time and later surprising themselves (therefore us) to kill them off. As a writer myself I realized the only way to know if the readers will be shocked and impacted from the characters death I would have to suprise myself and hit me the same way. Just my opinion

There have only been 3 times that fear the walking dead has annoyed me so much to the point of avoiding it until it no longer urks me. Those instances were Travis' death, Nick's death and John Dorie Jr's death. All three of them were just so poorly done. I understand the actors wanted to leave but seriously? It just made it so much more tedious to watch the show after all the best characters were killed off. Imagine if Travis was still alive, how interesting it'd be to see him having gone from someone who won't even put walkers down to a straight up emotionaless killer. The only hope I have now for season 8b is that they dont butcher Strand and Madison moreso than they already did and that Troy isn't the character coming back but rather some dumb flashback or hallucinations for Madison (though after Alicia and Morgan, we don't need more of those).

I stopped wstching when Nick died. He was by far my favorite character out of both shows and carried the first few seasons in my opinion. His character was so intresting

Travis was the moral compass similar to how Glenn was. Its just Travis was killed way too soon. Seeing him develop after the death of his son would have made the show more interesting.
When I looked it up, Travis actor opted to have his character killed off so he can focus on working on avatar 2 the way of water.

Has anyone seen the midseason finale of the final season? First off I’d like to punch the writer in the face if that was the final ending of Dwight and Sherry. Like literally, they bury their son, Dwight turns around, and says I don’t want to be with you anymore lol. OK so there they go, splitting again. Damn, the way the writers placed Dwight and Sherry, if this wasn’t the apocalypse, they might have been divorced at least six times already. That show is a squiggly one. Sherry’s running away tactics definitely rubbed off on Dwight. After they bury their son Dwight says basically I’m done with you. Lol. It’s not like she’s begging him to stay either. It’s like she’s low-key revealed that she doesn’t really care. lol anyway, on top of that we have Morgan Jones exit of the show. His exit was the most raggedy exit. I’ve seen of one of the best characters in the universe. I’d like the whole quote I would like to go look for my friend Rick now type of deal, but really?” The whole Padre thing I would’ve just deleted and added something else. We have (2) 20 something brother and sister, one looks to be Jewish, the other mulatto, which makes zero sense. In any event, they couldn’t have chosen a brother and sister that look completely different. Also, their whole exit of the series was stupid. They shouldn’t even been introduced in the first place. Seems like a whole waste of time rummaging around a swamp, have to season and seeing Morgan’s acid trip of “red“ in the midseason finale. Why? Did he stop being insane because of his daughter? I never knew that someone could just flick the often on switch of insanity. We have Morgan attacking everybody, including zombies, when in The Walking Dead universe after being taught aikido, he’s been kind of mellow. All of a sudden, his wife, Grace, which was a horrible addition to the characters by the way, dies, and he goes nuts. Let me go back to my rant on Grace. Grace has to be the worst character the show could have ever created. If I wanted to see Grace, every Sunday, I just have my wife come over lol. All she did an every other seen was either cry, or complain up until she was really bad, and then dying. We have Morgan’s love life attitude and graces pessimism.
I hate saying this, but I was so happy to see her go from the shell. She had to be the worst character. Every scene she was in was boring. Every scene they put her in was the type of scene where you conquer out on the couch, or slowly doze off Just to be woken up from an explosion or a zombie bite. 10 minutes later. It’s like “Grace are you done complaining?“ Then you have Morgan going nuts over her death when in all reality, the dude would’ve been doing jumping jacks and cartwheels. Let’s go back to the leader of Padre. We have a 20 year old woman with an Afro and Pinocchio for a brother. Really don’t even understand their whole premise in the show. Again, they kidnap children? Still don’t get it I might’ve missed it nor was I probably paying attention anyway. I thought that was some deep, dark sinister pedophile, who owned in ran Padre, but instead gave us these two morons.
They totally gave this writing zero effort, and it seems kind of rushed. You could just see it that the riders are just done. You could see the difference between fair and new ones like “dead city“. Notice how dead city had some substance, character , flexibility, where you see a character and you don’t even know if they’re good or bad. That’s The Walking Dead I mess. Still that show a little bit was somewhat raggedy and I think it has something to do with these woke-ass writers they have on the show.
I would’ve simply rehired Glenn Mazzara, Frank Durabonte, and Scott Gimple (and added writers, like Steve Buscemi, and the guy who wrote most of the Sopranos episodes) lock them in a room and say put the final season of fear together. Guarantee it would’ve been an awesome season if they did something like that. Instead, they probably had the last season ever of fear as a internship for college writers SMH.

So, Shrike and her brother might have different moms or the son is also biracial, but white passing. Shrike and her dad actually looked a lot alike, looking at their facial features. Still, makes no sense that these 2 sheltered, naive kids managed to ruthlessly lead a community, posing as their dead father, who seemed like the nicest, most honorable man

Yeah I agree. Just lazy lazy writing and this Padre arc is underwhelming. Seriously for a season finale Padre turns out to be bunch of kids running around like lord of the flies stealing kids... to do what exactly? This just doesn't cut it.

today it still sucks now, I hate Viktor Strand's character, they made him become a villain cause "no one else" is. Also brought back Troy to life even thought pieces of his brain were literally out of there in the dam and if he were to live he would probably be in a vegetable state. rip a good series

I thought that Fear the Walking Dead was about the difficult time in the beginning. I watched two seasons and to be honest only the first episode was interesting, the rest was awful. Basically Walking Dead 2.0 in the later seasons

Season 5 is really where shit went south. I mean absolutely terrible acting and performance and not because of the main characters. The lesbian girls acting was pretty good when she first came on and got worse over time. I don’t necessarily think it was her fault though. I mean seeing them take the show where they fly a plane, crash, no one dies, then they try to rebuild the plane (i dont know if they succeed havent gotten that far). That is just so unrealistic and stupid

And here we are in the last half of season 8 and we’ve made the last fatal nosedive… the best possible thing that could happen for me personally is the show getting cancelled before the finale ends. That would be a fitting end for this shitstorm

In one sense yes, the main character wanting to leave damaged the show. But in another sense the writers still fucked up worse because of all the bad writing that came next.

The show went south as soon as they killed off the Nick character (and shot by a little girl?!) in my opinion. I will say season 5 does start to get more interesting with adding Dwight and the return of Daniel Salazar's character.

Loved the series opening and lost interest very quickly
Nick waking up in the drug den was such an amazing scene
Bringing Morgan and Dwight into the show could’ve been awesome, they didn’t need to destroy the plans with Madison and Nick and everyone to do that, sucks they fumbled so hard with all these shows, so many cool characters wasted
Still not over how they did my boys T Dog and Oscar, I would’ve written Season 3 to have T Dog survive the scenario that killed him + we find him in the gym surrounded by dead walkers like Tyreese in the comics, then we find out him and Oscar are brothers and they have a parallel storyline to Daryl and Merle in that season
Would’ve had Rick, Daryl, and T-Dog be the OG trio, Daryl took a lot of Tyreeses part in the story, I would’ve split that between him and T, then as Glenn grows he becomes like the youngest brother of the four of em

Im sorry but it wasnt Frank Dillanes fault that FTWD got bad.
It wasnt his departure that caused the show to pivot into morgan becoming lead and bad writing.
It was in fact the show becoming bad that CAUSED him to leave. He saw seasons 4's garbage scripts well in advance and he saw what they were going to do to Madison in the mid-season finale and he decided to quit on that basis. If hed stayed on the show it wouldnt have been better, i can guarantee they would have made very little changes to the overall arc of season 4 theyd have just had Nick also be poisoned in the finale and be sitting around helpless like everyone else waiting for Morgan to come to his rescue.
And even if the stadium setting was interesting, Dillane didnt cause them to abandon that. The new writers always intended to jettison that setting because the entirety of season 4 part 1 was just a contrived excuse to give madison a complete character reboot before killing her off.
