Hi djremosnyc, does yours start using the electric start? If it does then stop the engine and then try using the kickstart with the fuel tap in the same position - that way you'll know the fuel tap is in the right position and that there is fuel in the carbs. If the bike hasn't been started for a while it will take a bit of time turning the engine over to get the fuel pump to get the fuel into the carbs. When I set the timing I used information from Randakks website.
You must have had some good luck I have a dutch road test from 1975, the reporter was not able to start the engine with the kick starter and I have the same experience: under less favorable conditions it may be difficult

Why go through all of that extra work to kick start it?
Good as a backup if the battery voltage is too low to start on the button.
