In this story from 2010, 60 Minutes Australia goes inside Gaza's underground tunnel network at the centre of the Israel and Hamas war. This was a rare access to the tunnels linking Gaza to the outside world. The Gaza Strip had been sealed off with Israeli land and sea blockade. The only way in is to dig deep across the land border to Egypt. They have become an essential but dangerous lifeline for Palestinians.
Through the tunnel network, they risk their lives time after time, scrambling through makeshift tunnels and smuggling goods from one country to another. It's a bizarre variation of those escape movies, where desperate men borough their way to freedom against incredible odds. The difference is, these tunnel rats always come back. Even if their home is the worst kind of prison.

Water and sanitation would be much better if the pipes for the water wasn’t repurposed for making rockets! When israel was over Gaza they literally brought in infrastructure for electricity and water.

How is 60 minutes lying? The reporter is there seeing the tunnels. It's not made up. This was filmed not too long ago. The tunnels do exist.
Very poor journalism - this is old footage and far from the current reality. 60 minutes just lost a lot of subscribers. Why not ask why Egypt blocks goods into this area. It took at least a decade to build the hundreds of km of concrete tunnels used by Hamas - and the local population are obviously fully aware that they were building them - given how well made they are and that the tunnel entrances and exits often come up inside houses and public spaces and buildings.
Yes, and reports such as outside the UNRWA headquarters I believe where the IDF found those cables going down to a Hamas server farm beneath them that the office carpark had been slowly sinking for years due to the tunnelling and apparently no one noticed. Whoopsy!

Ihis isn't quite what it appears to be. The primary purpose of the tunnel smuggling is to bypass the customs tax at the Rafah crossing. Also, goods may be stolen property, especially livestock. There is also a big trade in illicit drugs, especially Tramadol. Also, Palestinians without travel documents can pay to use the tunnels and go to Somalia and Pakistan. Presumably 60Minutes knows this but agreed not to report on this in order to get this impressive scoop.

This is an old article. Interesting that the irish guy claimed he couldn't get a single bag of cement....yet here we are years later seeing hundreds of hamas tunnels having been built using cement. It would be really good to see some more balanced reporting. I think everyone gets that Palestinians are suffering but the reasons why are not as simple as ...israel is evil. Egypt also closed down much of these cross border tunnels due to terrorist weapons smuggling. Thats not discussed either. If this whole issue was as simple as made out here it would have been resolved years ago.

60 Minutes should do a NEWS video on how HAMAS use the tunnels to store weapons and how HAMAS use Human Shields, how HAMAS construct tunnels under residential infrastructure under critical civilian infrastructures like Hospitals and School and why do they do this. As a prominent NEWS channel, 60 Minutes should show both sides of the situation and not just one side.

What nonsense. The EU has provided supplies multiple times, including building a water pipeline after Hamas contaminated major water sources in Gaza. Hamas dug up the pipes, cut them into rockets, and posted videos on Facebook bragging about it. These aren't tunnels for supplies to innocent people. These are tunnels for resupplying terrorists.

Odd that no mention made of the other end of the tunnels in Egypt. The govt there cannot be unaware of the many tunnel openings on the Egyptian side of the border, and not notice the transport of so much material and so many consumer goods from Egyptian markets towards a closed border where they disappear. Why the charade of keeping the border closed? Have the tunnels been mapped by INS to avoid them interfering with each other? Is there a "Tunnel Committee" that needs to approve each new tunnel route so it doesn't cause collapse of an existing, functioning tunnel? Do they join up in places to intersect and provide redundancy if part of a tunnel collapses, or needs work done?

Imagine if there was honestly a will to achieve peace! For a start it would mean peaceful protestors, highlighting injustices, wouldn't be shot with rubber bullets or real ones, or vitriolic rhetoric in the MSM. Their concerns could be properly address and injustices stopped in their tracks
