This is super interesting! Great informational video.
Coming from CAD drawings that I learned how to draw and read in high school, it's really nice to know that it helped me look past all the "crud" and look at individual things instead of being overwhelmed by the amount of info.

You've broadened my understanding for comprehension of plans written by engineers. Further it's great to know what the city expects. Until now I really didn't understand the importance of so many benchmarks and data points. Last couple projects I just shot from the hip and wound up doing all this surveying myself. Didn't know what a huge bullet I dodged. In fact I had bid a job before the general gave me the plans. Creepy...job cost 5 times more than planned because I didn't see all the papers. At least now I'll know what to look for before I bid again. Great vid. If a person can do some simple arithmetic and can read a map they can understand this vid. Also need to point out...have you considered being an educator? You're a great natural communicator and many advanced educational techniques were exhibited by your video presentation.

Love what you do man. Just failed my blue print class , it was so boring I couldn't catch on but I've Been watching your videos for the last 6 months and your one of the main reason I'm in school now to become an operator. This was definitely more helpful than what I saw in class today.

I won't be your best resource on that front. We use software for calculating cut/fill data on jobs.

Hello there, I really enjoyed this particular video simply because you went into an in-depth explanation of the subject... maybe for somebody who is just playing around with blueprints, this might be boring, but not for me! On the other hand, I certainly appreciate you taking the time to actually send me a video regarding my request for this particular information. That leads me to another request: Can you explain how the True North and Project North relate to each other and to the installation of the structure of a building? I am sorry if with this question I am taking too much of your time but for me, this is crucial... thanks a lot in advance.
This is actually pretty straightforward and doesn't require a full video breakdown. True north is exactly that. When true north is referenced the project is aligned to its orientation as it will be built. The problem here is that turning a building on a 32 degree angle on blueprints to make it align with true north doesn't really make sense. Instead we rotate the building to line up with the actual print. This is project north. The layout of the building on the drawings or on the computer screen is oriented to whatever direction we decide looks best. Project north will be located at the top of our drawing even though true north might be 30 degrees offset.
On the T/FTG elevations and Benchmark elevations what do we do subtract and then is this gonna tell me how deep to cut basement?
You will have a benchmark somewhere onsite that will give you the ground elevation. You subtract the T/FTG elevation from your benchmark and that will give you the depth of cut below the benchmark.
Does your local code not require separation of services? At least for the first of the run. Usually water with minimum 1’ separation ran over the sewer is common here.
We generally add separation by running the water line on a ledge within the same trench. The sanitary will be roughly a foot away and at a lower elevation from the water line.

How do you find what your grade rod needs to be set at based off what the elevation says on the plan?
Great question. That is where benchmarks come in. Somewhere on the site will be a benchmark that will be labeled with an elevation. You'll use the difference in elevation from the benchmark to the numbers on your plan to determine what your grade rod needs to be set at. Check this video out for more on that:
