You should get one of those rotating bases so it spins slowly in the case, you would be able to see all of it as it spins.

Fun fact--it's actually possible to metal-plate plastic! There are companies out there that specialize in it, including doing gold plating! BUT if you're going through all that trouble, going with the metal shell will give you the increased heft and temperature transfer for that extra ritzy feel.

WOW the 24k Gold Hits different compared to a Gold plated housing. It’s super cool. Jewellers use similar machines to change other met like Stainless Steel into Gold plated, surprisingly used same method for electronics. Wish you told us how much the project costs in making it Gold.

To plate the front you need a semi metalic primer made for plating plastics. That's how they plate the chrome plastic parts on your car. I hope this helps.

I would maybe just remove the battery. As with any device, when not in use or being put away for a while, I'd always remove the batteries.
Going in raw when you screw is the preferred way.

Such a cool build Wood. I've actually been thinking of doing a shell swap to have green shells with gold buttons, like ocarina of time joycons. I think they'd be really cool and I can't find anyone who has done that yet
Instead of a spinning plate, you should place either a reflective Plexi glass behind it or a reflective window film. Also, look up how to care for gold-plated objects, they lose shine over time if not properly stored.
I usually don't like gold stuff, but with that engraving it looks awesome. Cool idea!
I think if you get one of those spinning things for display you can place the switch on it to showcase the back. That would look sick ❤

I ran to the boxy pixel website to see if I could get that engraved design for my joycons/back plate too. It's not on there 😭 they do custom etching but I'm not sure if this design was just for Wood?

Hey Wood since you're just displaying it you should put two switches side-by-side the front with only the front part of the joy-cons in gold and then the other one is backwards to show off all the rest awesome etching that got done on there... or just get a rotating stand

When I hear "golden wii," that really takes my mind to places it doesn't need to go.
Generally speaking, I think most goldsmiths tend to use 18K gold instead: gold is a relatively soft and weak metal, so it's really easy to dent and damage. Mixing it with other metals gives it a bit of extra stability so it doesn't just deform if you accidentally press too hard on it.
Although I completely understand, that wouldn't make for NEARLY as exciting of a title and thumbnail lmao.
This looks good! Suggestion on the front though. How about putting something like a sticker on the black side of the screen to make it more better with the same designs running on the back plat and joycons. That way you have a clear screen, gold layered sides, then another thin layer of black then the gold plated joycons. Just a thought haha!

the OLED frame is metal already. You could get a gold front with an oled if you strip the paint and then gold plate it. But with the OG your best option is sadly gold paint but you could get a gold paint marker and mask off the screen and not even need to disassemble.

You could put gold leaf on the front. It wouldn’t be quite the same, but it would finish the look.
You can get authentic 24k gold leaf, but a lot’s synthetic. You can find it, though.
