    If you liked this recitation for any reason - the style, the message, or whatever - I recommend picking up the Book of Ecclesiastes. It's short and "sweet."
    Reason being, I don't think many people in the comments are understanding the point of this. This is directly inspired by the Book of Ecclesiastes; the point, here as there, is not to inspire bitterness, nor is Innocent wasting his breath complaining about something that can't be fixed. The point is to show the fruitlessness of life without purpose, or a life lived solely for the material.
    Christianity has been associated with Platonism for two millennia because both beliefs propose a simple truth: that life, lived solely in and for this world, is pointless. But, as Innocent or Socrates would be happy to tell you, there are things to live for beyond the tangible. Justice, virtue, selflessness - whether you believe these things come from the God or from the Good, they are worth pursuing in and of themselves, and unlike the nihilism of materialism they will satisfy you.

    • @michaelfurgessons2896
      @michaelfurgessons2896 Před 5 lety +8

      Thanks for the comment now the text makes more sense,will read the Ecclesiastes.
      And since you seem knowledgeable ,if one wants to learn about Platonic philosophy ,yet is short on time where may he start?

    • @marcel7922
      @marcel7922 Před 5 lety +5

      Well said.

    • @ormurhersveit2840
      @ormurhersveit2840 Před 5 lety +9

      @@michaelfurgessons2896 I am no expert on Plato, but "The Republic" is always a decent place to start. "Phaedo" and "Phaedrus" are much shorter, though maybe a bit less comprehensive. The Republic deals with ideas like the definition of Justice and Good (though it goes off on political tangents a lot). Phaedo deals with the nature of death and how people should think about death. Phaedrus is about different kinds of love, and how moral love is part of an ordered life.
      If you have more time, there are lots of good responses to Plato/philosophies based on Plato. In particular, if you're wondering about the intersection of Plato and Christianity, Saint Augustine is kind of the prime Christian Platonist. And Nietzsche is the default if you want to read someone who outright hates Plato and disagrees with him on basically everything.

    • @hanslazaro4940
      @hanslazaro4940 Před 5 lety +8

      Religion is associated with Platonism because both claim that ideas exist apart from human consciousness in a supernatural realm. In this view, reason is impotent, and knowledge must be mystically intuited from another dimension. This philosophical position is called "intrinsicism". Religion asserts that morality comes in the form of intrinsic, mystical duties with no real beneficiary or purpose. Intrinsic duties, as such, aren't based on reality. They can't be explained. For a man who already accepts them, no explanation is required. For a man who questions them, none is possible. The result is misery and death.
      Good means good to someone, for a particular purpose. There's no such thing as an "intrinsic good". There is no other world. The only alternative to "life, lived solely in and for this world", is death. Either you recognize that your happiness is the only reason for you to live, or you sacrifice yourself in the name of a non-existent, supernatural "greater good". The alternative to religion isn't nihilism. Religion says "self-sacrifice for God". Nihilism says "self-sacrifice for nothing". The alternative is not to sacrifice. Not to self-destruct. The alternative is embracing reality, reason, and happiness.

Under those circumstances, man's only potential is death.

      Catholics have almost as low opinion of the human will as Calvinists do. Calvinists believe the will is completely corrupt and cannot do good, so God must give habitual grace to us so He can do good deeds in us. Catholics believe that the will is corrupt and we can only do good deeds through actual grace. Very similar views, the only difference is that the will works with God's grace in the Catholic view, and it is God alone in the Calvinist. The habitual/actual grace distinction is key.

    Let’s rap:
    Cardinal Lotario de’ Conti di Segni,
    Pope Innocent III (1198-1216)
    Innocent III, not the jolliest of Popes,
    wanted to dash Everyman’s hopes.
    To make sure he did, his primary mission
    was to set out his thoughts on the human condition.
    His medieval mind produced a short treatise
    marked by a really heart-warming thesis:
    that Man’s made of slimeand is utterly vile,
    (and ‘Man’ includes Woman, so no need to smile!)
    Man is conceived in the stench of lust,
    ending his days as ashes and dust.
    Made of rotten blood and unclean semen,
    he enters the world pursued by a demon.
    In lifehe breeds fleas, tapeworms and lice,
    in death, worms and flies, the result of his vice.
    If it’s all vomitand dungwhen he’s ‘in the pink’,
    deathreduces him to putrefaction and stink.
    So no GayLothario was this Innocent Pope,
    clearly appalled at the thought of a grope.
    ‘De miseria humanae conditionis’
    was certainly not the work of a handsome Adonis.
    Although in frescoes he cuts a commanding figure,
    his prognathous jaw was only slightly bigger
    than his jug-handle ears and long thin nose,
    which, with his pale complexion, pose
    the proposition that he was actually a German,
    and seemed to regard humans as lower than vermin.
    His Desperate Dan jaw of the lantern variety
    had a light in there to search out impiety.
    Yet people still read the song that he’d sung:
    ‘the more delicate the food, the more reeking the dung.’
    Given the obsessions of Pope Innocent III,
    it’s fitting that his title rhymes with…
    Now what’s the word?

      I understand you because I would say the same thing you are saying many years ago.
      If you read what Jesus said, with an open mind, you will understand that he didn't want people to be blind, he wanted them to see beyond their basic understanding.
