Watching Jon and Jirard stream their co-op Completionist episodes were some of the best Jirard streams I’ve popped in on. The first Gunstar Hero was especially great when drunk Jacque came in, but the second one was still really good. I remember Jirard’s face of disbelief and subsequent laughing fit when he attempted to throw a stack of boxes and it got stuck.
Me and my brother used to play this at least once a week back in the early 90s, which is surprising when I hear that not many people played it. It’s an absolute gem !!
If you love the bosses of this game then Alien Soldier, which acts as a semi-sequel to Gunstar Heroes, is nothing but a massive boss rush the entire game. It's also crazy hard though and doesn't have multiplayer.
This is actually my favorite game from my childhood. Each difficulty will present you with different boss moves. I thought the visuals were impressive.
Banger OST. One of the first "Anime, the video game" kinda things. Sentai-like ranger characters, Lots of expressive and memeorible villain tropes, an evil green ranger betrayal. Excellent brother co-op game pre grade school.

If you're as much a gaming geek as me, do yourself a favor and get an 8bitdo M30, and use the Switch's button reconfiguration feature to match all the button controls to the real deal. It'll take a little getting used to, but man is it satisfying!
For folks who are fans of Cuphead and haven't tried Gunstar Heroes, you owe it to yourself to check it out! Cuphead was very heavily inspired by Gunstar in terms of gameplay, with some of the weapons even working almost exactly the same between the two games. In particular, King Dice's gauntlet is based on the Dice Maze level, and the floating 8-ball boss is a direct homage to good ol' Melon Bread!
I remember playing this game with my dad and we had a lot of fun playing cuphead a few years later and we realized how many similarities there are between the two.
Ohhhh the joyful times I spent with this game. Love it so much I have the cartridge and the vinyl. Free mode with homing/laser combo is how I almost always play my runs.

Your original review of Gunstar heroes is the reason I love that game to this day. I have so many different releases of it spanning from Xbox 360 to 3ds to phone. I even got the original genesis release despite not having a sega genesis
one goes lightning-fire for the light sabre to deflect enemy shots and do massive short range damage, one goes lightning-hunter to autoaim fast moving enemies and bosses and auto-win if we survive long enough
Gunstar Heroes has amazing music... like, it gets you in the mood for playing it every single time... Also, the main villain was called General Grey in the original, which makes more sense, considering Red is also already the name of one of the main characters... no idea why they changed that...
I used to love watching ProtonJon's Smash Bros videos back in the Brawl days! And I'll never forget his Let's Play of Knytt Stories. Don't eat the mushroom! I still quote random lines from those videos to this day

I think me and my friends must have played nearly all the good games on snes and genesis via emulation around 1998-1999. Good times being able to play all the games we couldn’t afford as kids
I do remember my aunt had this game when I was younger, and experiencing it when we visited her house was always a trip. The crazy visuals and fast paced combat made it so much fun to watch or play it. But I don't think I ever played it with someone else, or beat it. It's so difficult like a lot of Treasure's classic games, but so good, too
I played it's sorta remake sorta sequel "Gunstar Super Heroes" for the GBA and learned about this game through the Genesis collection on the switch (not the online version, the actual game)
I noticed him using the command slide a few times but no mention of it. It's prob one of the strongest attacks as it chunks health numbers of units when done with good timing. Still glad to see a (re)completion of this~♪
Treasure loved to mix lore from their games. How y’all mentioned the world destroyer in the Japanese version ties into the game Guardian Heroes & Golden Silver, the final boss of Gunstar, was also one of the final bosses in Guardian Heroes. Also the 7 force boss, was also a boss in Alien Soldier. Gunstar Green held the 7 force in Gunstar & an assassin lady held it in Alien Soldier.
I remember playing this game on the Genesis. Melon Bread was weird but the worst space in the dice maze is one where you can't use any of the guns. It's in the video at 11:30. This game was great.

Iconic Genesis game! Still love the dice game level, especially how most of that game gave inspiration to Cuphead's bosses. Gunstar got Melonbread, Cuphead gave way to Mangosteen.
Treasure has a high quality in most of their games, not to mention they are what people consider a company with games that are classified as casual gamer killers.

Hell yea!! Gunstar Heroes and mostly everything Treasure has done for Genesis is classic stuff!! Easily one of e greatest action games ever!

Treasure was my Squaresoft in the 90s. Instant classic for me. and had tons of fun memories playing coop with my bestfriend.

I played this game so much and beat it so much I memorized patterns at 6-7years old. Some of the tactics I used are still very much fresh to me.
