Snatch was 2000, Ocean's Eleven was 2001. Lots of things to compare (not just Pitt!) ... I think which one you like better is a big indicator of movie preferences. But I think the editing in Snatch probably influenced everyone who saw it.

So, a thing about the soundtrack.
Ghost Town by The Specials: It's a British Ska band of the late 1970s. It is often used to represent 1) the black community of London because of it's Jamaican Roots both in music and in immigration culture from the 1940s/1950s, and 2) the down and out blue-collar working community due to England's shift from the industrial market into the service market starting in the late 1970s. The song is about factory towns drying up after the factories close.
So, if you are in London and you need to highlight a character intro who is 1) Black (bald is a bonus*), 2) from the lower class, or 3) works a dead-end job, cue Ghost Town from the Specials as your audio motif.
*Immigrant Jamaicans were bald as a fashion statement and it became part of their culture. Young, white English men who work side by side with the immigrant would also adopt this look. They would eventually be known as skinheads, the good kind. After the media labeled them as a rival gang, they were forced to stay in groups for safety from the current gangs (mods and teddys). They came from rough neighborhoods and often wore tough boots from work. Also, being from blue-collar working groups, they were avid football fans. (soccer). Skinheads were the original football hooligans. During the class crisis in the late 1970s, skinheads were targeted by England's version of ALT-Right at football games and pubs. Once a few of them went over to the violent side, the press demonized the skinheads as a whole, and they were like "F*ck it. We'll be the bad guys." Ska music tried to bring them together in peace and equality, but the post-punk Oi! movement encouraged slam dancing thus an open invitation to link skinheads with hard punk.
    (Sorry, that was a lot.)

Snatch is a lesson in cinematography, and transcends any culture and engages you from start to finish, and leave you wanting more, also the sound track throughout is exceptional and so clever it is so under valued, so in summery simply classic British film making at its very very best. And to think this film script is based on all the bits that didn't make Lock Stock!

Hey bro, I Love your reviews. As a Brit, I feel like you really understand the nuances and quirks of British life (not just from this movie, but others too). You’re obviously a Very smart guy, and you know way more than I do about the tech aspects and terminology around filmmaking, so I learn from watching, too. But with British movies, you really do interpret and understand them like a native would! Awesome!
I gotta say, the opening scene from Snatch - from the robbery where they gain entry by dressing as Ultra-Orthodox Jews, to the flowing scene where the main characters are introduced - is just beautiful, SO cool, so slick…… I struggle to describe it! Anyway, respect from the UK, and stay safe, buddy! 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍

There is a 25 minute documentary on CZcams with Guy Ritchie from a few months back where he rewatches Snatch for the first time in 15 years or so and he goes through a lot of his process back then as a film maker including the confidence he had making this film after the success of Lock Stock. It is definitely worth a watch to see how he drew his editing styles from westerns and such and his directing and writing styles.

  • @chrischarlescook

Pikey is a derogatory term. The genius of Richie was his skill in playing on all the stereotypes of the community, even having the rest of the cast openly mocking them and vocalising their prejudice. But then making them the heroes of the film. Guy is a legend.

Snatch is in my top 5 favorite movies ever, no question. Literally EVERY SINGLE SCENE in it is FULL of quotable lines - hell, I'd even go as far as guessing that perhaps 2/3rds of ALL the dialogue in Snatch is quotable as hell. Certainly there are more quotabb
And my favorite character is Brick Top. Hell, he may well be one of my favorite movie characters, period! If not just for all his hilariously vulgar, and incredibly quotable lines he has right from his first appearance, but also for the comedic contrast of seeing a man like Alan Ford not just playing unhinged psychopath like Brick Top, but also playing him SO CONVINCINGLY!
And you can tell, Alan Ford is having SO much fun getting to play such an effed-up character! despite being a skinny, small-statured man in his late 70s with huge poor-eyesight glasses at the time of filming Snatch, managed to carry an absolutely MENACING presence every second he was on film... whenever he's in a scene you just feel terrified for the lives of whoever he's there to see - like damn near ANYTHING could happen to them, 'cos he has most definitely PLENTY capable of DOING anything.

What I like about Snatch, and most British Crime/Drama/Anything, is the humour. Not for the sake of being funny, but there's always a layer of humour, to make the emotional parts hit harder. When Mickeys mums caravan goes up in flames, it's the stark contrast to the rest of the comedy that makes it hit so hard.
