Oh, I really loved R&F and was thinking recently I'd like to see it again. One of my favorite movies that almost no one else seems to know about. And MANDY ... holy shite. Can't wait for that reaction cuz that's ... quite an experience. The only thing that's sad to me about all these reactions is that you're watching the films on a computer instead of a larger screen (at least, that's what it looks like). I feel like there's one reacter (reactor?) I've seen that looks like he watches on a bigger flat screen, but can't remember who. Also, if you've never seen 'No Country for Old Men', THAT's the film I would love to see you react to sometime (followed by almost every other Coen Brothers movie)! NCfOM knocked Dr. Strangelove out of my favorite film of all time award.
Hey thanks! Yeah as of right now my current setup as me on the laptop. But once I get the rest of my set up in the near future I’ll be able to watch these on a bigger screen. My laptop is still pretty damn big though. I’m still enjoying the experience 👌🏽

You should watch Seven Psychopaths if you haven't. Its made by the same filmmaker and is just as funny.
Still have to watch The Lobster which is on my Netflix list. As it's also a dark comedy and Colin Farrell is the lead actor.

Bruges is Ray's purgatory - a theme common in Irish literature. Not an idea they dance around: it's like their visit in the museum looking at "The Last Judgment". The idea of stark contrasts is all over this movie. You can be cackling over the moments of comic relief only to bawl uncontrollably at Chloë's playful "Just children".
Idk about you but ppl were laughing at the scene where Ray commits his sin 😅
This movie is a masterclass, the themes of sin and judgement are woven all the way through, it's almost biblical. I think having grown up in the catholic church, theres just something about the way you look at things. The writer/director, Mcdonagh did such a good job at touching on that feeling of guilt, Bruges is basically purgatory, awaiting their judgement together in this foriegn medieval setting. They reference Nicholas Roegs Dont Look Now as well which has similar themes!
Youre so right, it's hilarious and so well acted. The dialogue is just fantastic and to have actors like Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes perform the lines youve written must be a dream come true for any writer director. Really glad you watched this one, great review and insights as always!

Was looking for someone to mention purgatory. He was even talked out of killing himself to await judgement. Not directly, but indirectly. It really pulls you into the discussion of whether people can change or if their actions define the eternally.
I think the cinematography in this movie is underrated. Intimate but also gave a lot of flavor of the city. The color scheme perfectly matched the mood.
Easily the darkest movie I’ve seen. Surprised me with how far it was willing to go, but underneath all the jokes is a really great story. Colin Farrell was amazing in this, really solid his inner turmoil. Another movie in a similar vein if you haven’t seen it, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, is written and directed by the same person as this. It’s got a great character driven story and I think directing wise a bit more polished than In Bruges. Great reaction as always!

this movie feels like its tailored for me, I'm a sucker for good dialogue and dark humor, and this movie is one of the best in that. I also love how tight the writing in this movie, the themes (guilt, redemption) are not too subtle but also not too obvious!
Brendan Gleeson is the actor who played Mad Eye Moody, yes. And ironically, Harry is played by Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort.
And Colin Farrel is in Fantastic Beasts

He couldn't even kill himself right. He was remorseful for killing a child, yet he was about to shoot himself at a playground where children would find him and probably be traumatized. Or, with how his luck tended to run, he'd probably shoot himself and yet still hit another kid or mother.
The cinematography in this is subtle, but it makes it feel like you are there as a kind of invisible ghost wanting to see what is going on, but not be bumped into. When Ken is looking down, you get this great overhead shot first to see what he is looking at, then back at him to see what he is doing. When Ken is on the phone in the hotel room pacing about, the camera goes shakey-cam as if you are trying not to be stepped on dodging out of his way. When the woman swings a bottle at Ray, it looks like it going to hit the camera and it pulls back to dodge it even as Ray dodges back.
It is like the camera is always in the way of the actors and another shot could have gotten the scene without it being in the way as much, but the most awkward setup is chosen every time.
There was probably a whole lot of thought put into the cinematography to make it look like there was none, like the amount of makeup skill it takes to make a woman look like she is wearing none.
I can see that! Wouldn’t put that idea pass you either! Where I was going ay was primarily sometimes you can just “shoot” the movie as is..and still be perfectly fine! The highlight in my opinion was more so the script and performance. The cinematography was still good, but it wasn’t the same weight class in my opinion as the acting or screenplay!
@@JamesVSCinema I'm a little late to the party here, but the writer/director, Martin McDonagh, is fairly well-known for his plays, and this was one of his first movies. So I think your observation that he just "shot" the movie is a good one. It's exactly what might be expected when someone with a stage background makes a movie.
Maybe you, the viewer, are playing the role of the little boy's ghost.
Always gave me such mad respect for Colin Farrells facial expressions
"In Bruges" marked the turning point in Colin Farrell's career. Suddenly, he was gaining the respect of the critics and his peers, and landing better and better roles in better and better movies.
If you enjoy the dark humour, you might enjoy Four Lions. It’s about an inept group of suicide bombers in the UK

Rock N'Roller wasn't exactly Guy Ritchie's finest work.
And his recent movie "The Gentleman" deserves another watch before deciding.
Was half asleep watching it and it wasn't bad. But it definitely needs another watch before a solid opinion is made.

This is actually a very philosophical movie behind all the jokes. To me, that’s what makes it great. You can enjoy it on several levels. For the philosophy. For the comedy. For the relationships. For the setting. Etc.
This is one of my favorite movies ever! And I honestly found the scene where Ken tells Ray to “save the next little boy” very inspiring; as in if you let someone down or believe you’ve screwed up, just do your best and devote yourself to doing the right thing the next time. And never throw your life away no matter what happens.

A very bizarre, absurd dark comedy. I find it interesting that 3 of the principle actors, (Gleeson, Fiennes and Poesy) were in Harry Potter films at the time, and Farrell got roped into the franchise later.

And Brendan Gleeson's son, Domhnall Gleeson was also in 2 or 3 Harry Potter movies.
He played on a Weasley character, but I don't know much about those movies.

James VS Cinema awh man Fargo was my favorite movie of all time for years! You’d love it. Best of the Coen Brothers in my opinion although No Country For Old Men is a very worthy contender.
A great companion piece to FARGO is THE ICE HARVEST. Lot of people don't know about that one, but it's a hidden gem that's also dark AF.
In Bruges has one of the best screenplays ever. I love this film, and Martin McDonaugh’s next film Seven Psychopaths is also really enjoyable.
This movie is one of my top 10 of all times.

I don't really know why it took me so long to watch In Bruges. I first saw it a couple of months ago but damn, the dialouge is on point. The humor is broad but the characters are nuanced.

I consider all three as a trilogy so when someone asks me about my top 5 film trilogy's I can say r=that it's included in it
one of the few films that can make you cry from laughing or the sheer sadness of some scenes the final plea gets me everytime "I really really hoped I wouldn't die", the intricacies of the characters too harry's matter of principals and pride were his delusion that ultimately killed him and even during that time lying on the floor with multiple bullet wounds colin farrel's character was desperately trying to tell him he wasn't a child, truth were his principals and the wanting to be punished for wrongdoing not mull around in purgatory waiting to find out what happens to him, he was honest to a fault as displayed in every scene the whole role being this fascinating oxymoron of a remorseful killer with a heart of gold that for all his mistakes and acts that could be described as evil he was the least evil of the other literal hitmen, but is punished far more for an accident on his first job as opposed to them having killed hundreds deliberately, its genius.
Good stuff man. Nice to find a channel that actually has a discussion about the movie afterwards and not just mindless reacting. Subscribed.

We went to Bruges after seeing this movie and how amazing the city looks. When we were there, nobody got killed as far as we know.

I love In Bruges, and it's only just occurred to me (when you said it felt generic) that it almost kills you into a false sense of comfort and banality.

Not sure whether this has been mentioned, but when Ken gets the call in his room he is watching a well known film famous for its incredible long one shot. Kens telephone conversation is a one shot that goes on for the same length of time as that one.

It was cool having the opportunity to go and visit Bruges for a day not too long after having seen this.
Another great movie. Hadn't seen it in years. It's an absolute classic. So well done.
Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. Two great Irish actors.
Unfortunately Colin Farrell is at that awkward age now where he's too old to play Action roles, and too young to play the Older roles. But he's still a good actor.
Funnily enough he used to drink at the same Bar as me when he was home in Dublin. Think his Brother lived nearby or something.
Brean Gleeson has two sons that Act too. One of them, Domhnall Gleeson, has done very well.
He's done the last 2 or 3 Star Wars movies, The Revenant, Unbroken, Brookln, American Made, and even a few Harry Potter movies like his Father. Plus loads more.
Big roles in massive movies. But he doesn't court the Media much. He doesn't seem to play the Hollywood game.
If you want to see another lesser known Brendan Gleeson movie then check out "I Went Down". It was pretty funny. Not as good as this though.
Also "The General" which is a true story about the biggest Criminal in Ireland for years.
He spent decades on top, even stealing Rembrandt Paintings among others. He used to deal with the IRA amd Loyalist groups during the height of the Northern Ireland troubles.
He lived about 5 minutes from me growing up. Always wore a hood up and was followed by a Special Armed Police Force wherever he went.
It wss weird as hell.
But Gleeson looked just like him, and it's very dark at times.

I know the accents throw off a lot of Americans. But as a complete movie it's peonominal.
Danny Boyle is an amazing Director. "28 Days Later" just proves that, as one of the best Zombie movies ever made.

You were curious why they kept that long take of the phone call.....the scene opens up on a tv - which is a famous long take where a bomb is set In the Back of a moving car and the scene plays out, the audience not knowing when the bomb will go off. Same scenario, the conversation is leading towards the eventual bomb drop that he has to kill Ray's character because of what he did. You can actually here the literal bomb go off in the background on the tv as the metaphorical bomb is dropped when it is revealed that Ken has to kill ray :)
@Dexter Morgan No but the Hitchcock quote is a perfect example of tension, and plays well into these scenes as well. The in Bruges scene has a bomb drop of information that almost comes out of knowhere, while the other is litteraly a bomb in the back of a car setup so the audience knows about it prior.

Great movie. I remember seeing this in a small independent theater when it came out. We had no idea what it was. And then walked out totally stunned. It's the writing in this, that is sooo good. The dialogue, the story, the foreshadowing. I saw this when I was in college and taking a short-story writing class, and I became obsessed with the dialogue in this. Anyway, keep these movies coming.

One of my favourite 5 films of all time. Honestly so good. It's funny but the themes and ideas they use in it are also so interesting
One thing I really appreciate about this movie is how much the filmmakers made Bruges itself a "character." All the scenery shots showing off the architecture to get a feel for the town, using all the landmarks for various scenes to weave them directly into the story, and of course, the constant complaining/praising of the the place by the different characters. It all helped really ground the film in a way where the audience really gets and understanding of the setting and how it affects everyone there.
Agreed! It honestly becomes its own theme making this “boring” town a lot more than just a town but like you said..a character!

I've been following your channel for a while and not sure why I haven't seen your reaction to In Bruges until now. Good job. I don't know why but the scene where he's looking at that ugly dog with disgust makes me laugh harder than any other moment in the movie, and there are so many. But where I cried hard was seeing the little kid's note about the things he feels bad about. That broke me. This is Farrel at his best. The whole cast is solid.

Can't fully say that given that McDonagh (scriptwriter & director) is British. I know both of his parents are Irish but still he is British therfore, although the 2 main actors are Irish, I'd personally say the film is British. I'm Irish btw.

I visited Bruges a year after it came out. I chatted with the locals and several of them were pissed because Collin’s character kept bad mouthing Bruges. Funny. And yes, Bruges is like a fvcking fairytale!
Severely underrated dark comedy. It's honestly a tough watch! It's a lot to stomach, but absolutely hilarious.

This movie just makes me have a goofy smile the whole time! This was the director’s first film, I believe, and I think he started as a playwright, probably why the dialogue pops so much! His second film, Seven Psychopaths, didn’t do it for me, but the third I enjoyed greatly, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri!

James VS Cinema Martin McDonagh was a playwright before he was a filmmaker, and I think it shows in his dialogue. You should check out his brother’s work too (John Micheal McDonagh) like The Guard and Calvary.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, this is one of the funniest movies of all time.

It's a film that needs more than one viewing to appreciate all the nooks (or is it alcoves?)... it's one of those little known masterpieces. Personally, I thought the cinematography was brilliant, as were the characters and all of the performances were flawless... even the small roles.
That's Domnhall Gleason's father. he also played mad eyed mooney in the harry potter series.

Martin Mcdonagh was an acclaimed writer and director for the theatre here in Ireland before he made this, his cinematic debut. That's maybe why the script and the acting take precedence over flashy camerawork.
I've always seen Bruges as a symbol for purgatory. He gets even more symbolic in his more recent collaboration with Farrell and Gleeson: "The Banshees of Innisherrin" Check it out, Buddy.
