  • Makoto Shinkai's new masterpiece Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) has a lot of parallels with his latest film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) and Your Name (Kimi no Na wa). But still, his newest film is definitely a different film than his usual ones...find out more here!

    What is your favorite Makoto Shinkai film :))?

    In one interview at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Shinkai acknowledged the comparisons of himself and Hayao Miyazaki. He stated that although he respects Miyazaki and his films (since some influenced his own work), he believes that the comparisons are “overreaching” as he put it. Despite his English not being very good, he’s quite humble that he wants to be himself rather than being titled as “the next Miyazaki.”

    This is probably by fair the most fair take on the film viewed on it's own terms
    Suzume isn't simply just different from his previous work, it also embraces the concepts introduced throughout his filmography, and wraps them up in a tidy neat bow, showing that Makoto Shinkai has clearly evolved as a creator.
    The movie's title itself couldn't be anymore fitting, that alone hits so close to home and I'm grateful for it, and you can call it recency bias, but this is my favorite work from the man himself

      @@mules8662 ah that's good to hear :) so: I would definitely recommend Your Name! Weathering with you also, but especially your name! If you like Shinkai's style you can also check out his previous film "Garden of Words" - it's only 40 minutes and you can find it hear on youtube!
      And since Shinkai is called "Miyazaki's successor" I can pretty much recommend every film of Hayao Miyazaki (and studio ghibli) - especially Princess Mononoke and Kikis Delivery Service - his films are all magnificent :))!
      If you need more recommendations let me know! And have fun with the films, experiencing them for the first time😊😊

    *SPOILER WARNING*
    So... As a person who has watched Your Name over 100 times. I'm not even joking I really did. Suzume pacing is very similar to Your Name. Ik this is a criticism everyone has of Suzume. But really think of Your Name. The first half of Your Name is like spamming major plot points and information back to back scene after scene with no fkn information. But half way through the movie when Taki was supposed to meet up with Mitsuha... The movie slows down. It let's you digest everything. It starts explaining this and they go on the final adventure to save everyone. Suzume did the same thing. In the beginning bam open up a door. Sees this galaxy place. Picks up a stone it turns to a fucking cat. Like wtf is going on then this big red thing comes out like wtf. There's earthquakes. Then they shut it. Go home then "suzume". Turns dude into a chair. And then its non stop anxiety. It gives you about 10 minutes to appreciate the area then " suzume" 🤣😭😭😭 thennnnn half way through the movie when he becomes the keystone... The movie slows down. Starts explaining things. Let you digest wtf is going on then they go on the final adventure. Weathering with you pacing is actually the most different. The entire movie is very slow paced like a studio ghilbli movie. Not saying its a bad thing. Its literally like experiencing everything like in real life. Super cool. Obviously the plot is different. But pacing wise Your Name and Suzume is very similar. Just just go back a rewatch your name. Trust. BTW I loved Suzume. Your Name still my favorite.

    Why do you hate cats? Daijin is not the bad guy here. It’s the worm… hahaha…. The cat just wanted to party a little with his new friend, Suzume… haha…
    I guess I’m not the target audience, but all 3 romances seemed forced/ a stretch for the last 3 movies. This one, the main leads just met. Weathering, they spent a few days/weeks. Name, they never met and were from different time periods. Somehow, one of the leads in each movie is confessing his/her love by the end of the movie and crying…. Too much drama… haha…
    But I’m here for the animation all day! Beautiful!😊

      @animeblues1412  Před rokem +3

      nooo - I'm a cat person :D! Yeah, I definitely understand the "rushed" romance aspect. Especially in Suzume, they exchanged only a couple of words...so the motivation was a little shallow I admit that. In Your name I think it was really well done on the other hand! If you like the animation and you want a more grounded love story check out his film "The Garden of Words" - beautifully animated and the love story is also pretty wholesome :) you can find it here on youtube!

    The only 2 things I did not liked about this film was how too simple the story was, and I didn’t like that the aspect ratio was changed from 16:9 to 2.39:1.

    I understand what you’re getting at regarding how real world events were written into his movies storylines. I’ve seen every one of Makoto Shinkai’s films. Whether it was his early works like The Garden of Words or Children Who Chase Lost Voices, so jumping forward to what brought Shinkai to fame in the states with Your Name? He performed exceptionally well. Weathering with You and Golden Globe-nominee Suzume are also wonderful additions to his library. I accept them all equally despite each of them having their own fair share of flaws.
    His work is inspiring to me, especially in the early days of the 2020 pandemic forcing many of us in lockdown. I watched a few of them during those days to the point it influenced me to create AMVs as tribute to Makoto Shinkai. I’ve made many in the past before I learned of who Shinkai even was, but his animation is so visually appealing and stories are intriguing that it had me understand the importance of making AMVs feel impactful and meaningful; not just about flashy transitions, filters, and precise clip timing to the beat or mood of a song alone. ⏱️🎞️
