A friend took me to the see Hunger Games in the theatre. I knew nothing about it, and was mortified when I saw a kid smashing another in the face with a brick. It made me feel sick to my stomach, and I abhorred the movie from then on. However, over the next few days, my mind kept going back to how interesting Effie was. I eventually read the books, and understood the story. Now, I love them all, thanks to Effie.
I do wish Katniss' makeup team was kept in the later movies. Their adoration of Katniss, and, later, the abuse they suffered in 13 brought in a whole other level of complexity and depth to me.
Blu Jay honestly me too Effie and the makeup team as well as Johanna and finnick (I don’t remember how to spell his name) ended up being my favorite characters and I’m honestly pissed they didn’t get more recognition in the films with the exception of a spilt second clip in the first movie the make up team deserved more than that😡
Patrick Berger Look at what he’s wearing though; a suit jacket (a contemporary piece that we would wear today) and a neck frill (a 16th and 17th century piece that we recognise as an historical garment). The ‘umbrella’ is really just a parasol in a slightly odd shape. I think these pieces come together to show us something that we can isolate and recognise in individual parts but when it’s all put together, it’s a new look that we haven’t really seen before
A friend answered a casting call for the first Hunger Games movie. He had his own tent with his own stylists. Picture taking was not allowed. When the movie came out he came to class the next day (he was a fine arts student at Elizabeth City State Uni in NC in our sculpture class.... he was an excellent painter btw) and he had his gorgeous grin on his face. The camera focuses on him 5 times (when Katniss did her first twirl on stage being interviewed by Flickerman)... he is the black man in pink in the audience. His name is Iseah Jelani and he wants to be an actor as well as continue his fine arts.

in the beginning of the first movie Katniss talks about fleeing from district 12 and Gales says that they would get caught and their tounges would get cut off. Its really just one sentence. but I cant remember them saying the word avox.
They mention that the guy serving them food in the first movie when Peeta and Karin’s go to the capitol for the games is an avox, Peeta asks what that means and someone explains but other than that I don’t remember they mentioning it ever again

I wish the ladies/hair, make up and costumes would read these comments. Ladies, I totally saw the story thru your work and choices. Breath taking is the accurate word.
It's actually amazing the amount of detail that goes into a movie and into portraying an art. It's quite spectacular. I thought they captured the Capitol styles in my mind perfectly. Especially Tigress!

Since people are CHOOSING to be triggered about the hair comment. She doesn't say frizzy hair is unnatural. She's referring to the styles in the movie where there's an unnatural texture and style to the hair. Example a perm. Frizzy, curly but usually not like anyone's natural curls. (Every curly haired person I know says natural curls are not the same as a perm) Think of the wigs they had on very reminiscent of 17 century but not a natural texture. Vintage fabric for her reaping dress. That's awesome! No wonder it looks so authentic! It really does look like something my Great Grandma Chet wore in the '30's. She lived in a farmhouse that was built in 1890. It sits out in a tiny hollow that branches off from another small hollow that branches off from a highway that was once another small road. It's my family home on my Mom's side. We now live there and have been "remodeling" (keeping it as authentic as possible). ❤💖 When I first read the book and Katniss mentions that District 12 was once known as Appalachia, I instantly connected. It's my favorite series, along with Harry Potter.
The Hunger Games franchise is one of the best costumed series of films to ever been released. It got the contrast of class right in a way that frightened me when I saw the first film.
They really outdid themselves in this - everything was above and beyond anything I’ve ever seen in a film before. I could not believe the amazing detail that went into every extra - even if they were only shown for a second. Spectacular job, thank you so much for all the fantastic work.
A friend answered a casting call for the first Hunger Games movie. He had his own tent with his own stylists. Picture taking was not allowed. now I'm excited to know what the styles will look like for "Songbirds & Snakes!" cause that's another era entirely! (also goes for props, product design, architecture, &c.)
I would have loved to be a Capitol extra in the film! I don't need to have lines, I just needed to be in one of those outfits! The styles are outrageous! Like it's so vivid and creative and just out there. There were no rules so they just let their imagination run wild.
This is my ultimate goal in life. To be able to work as part of the costume department for the entertainment industry. I absolutely love it and I was geekin'out watching the makeup designer as well because I am a big fan of her work and she's a legend.
The costume designing was incredible. Better than anything since. Effie’s butterfly dress was incredible and Katniss and Peeta’s outfits bursting into flames during the opening ceremony takes my breath away. Phenomenal.
Having all those extras be in hair&makeup for hours JUST to have them on screen for about a seconden, only passing, just to bring some atmosphere to life. Man I love that. All that effort. How much fun did these people have??
I remember watching this and being so excited to see how they interpreted the fashion. At the time I had absolutely no care for fashion, but they were so interesting in the book.
To be honest, I liked the metaphor that went hand in hand with Effie's wardrobe and Katniss's as well. In the beginning, Effie was in all the flamboyant, gaudy costumes and it was like she was wearing a mask. I never felt like I was seeing the REAL Effie....then in the second movie, she changes. Its not flamboyant anymore...its a different kind of mask. She's using her wardrobe (like the gold wig) as her way of showing her loyalty to Katniss. Then when we see her in the third movie with Plutarch, ALL the makeup and jewelry and costumes have been stripped away. You see the true Effie and she is completely loyal to Katniss and making her the Mockingjay. With Katniss, Cinna starts her out as this Girl on Fire, but the fire changes as she goes on her journey. She starts out very bright (bright flames, bright oranges in her gown)....then at the end of the first movie she's in the soft yellow dress for Peeta. In the second movie its still fire, but much darker. In the third movie, notice that Cinna has done away with fire entirely and made her costume completely black as she embraces the Mockingjay. I think the darkening of the colors is a reflection of Katniss's inner turmoil, By the third movie, she is emotionally very shattered. And then in the end with Peeta, she's in yellow again. She's found peace, despite all the pain she's endured..ou see it in the Mockingjay pin as well....in the beginning its gold, but then in the third movie, Cinna has made it black as well.
I'm a man who knows nothing of fashions and styles but I thought the costumes in this film were one of its best features, along with the soundtrack and the contrast between D12 and the neo-roman capitol - it really spelled decadence and made you very loatheful yet at the same time fascinated by the Capitol - it would be a great place to visit if you had a good evac plan. I preferred the parts showing the capitol to the more combat oriented sequences. They should do a planet of the apes style movie where a small group of early 21st century space travellers get transported to Panem circa the 60th games and are shocked by what they find
I know that a lot of the capitol stuff would have been impossible to do (fashionably light- green tinted skin?) but I would love to see some concept art for stuff like that.
I really hope that now they're talking about making a movie for the new book the capitol fashion will be done like how they did it here, that would be absolutely amazing
The vision and creative flair these people have, honestly surpasses talent - it literally borders on genius. The fact that this movies costume design wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award - is just flat out unacceptable.
Why the hell wasn't this movie nominated for an Oscar for Costume Design? It's unbelievable.

The clothing and makeup ect was one of my favorite parts of the movie. It’s so cool and beautiful.
now I'm excited to know what the styles will look like for "Songbirds & Snakes!" cause that's another era entirely! (also goes for props, product design, architecture, &c.)
yeah i wonder if the fashion will be less intense seeing as its not that long since the war ended.
Anyone else notice that the song for Caesar Flickerman’s show sounds like the Dancing with the Stars theme song?
I was thinking more like John Cena...
I love Jennifer both brunette and blonde. She's just beautiful all around.
Jeffree Star would fit right in
"anybody else have spots on their pants?" that made me laugh so hard!
Love how they mixed vintage with futuristic thought out the movie
The costume designing was incredible. Better than anything since.
Effie’s butterfly dress was incredible and Katniss and Peeta’s outfits bursting into flames during the opening ceremony takes my breath away.
Phenomenal.
This is such a wonderful movie !! Everything about it is just spectacular!! It’s truly a joy to watch!!
Having all those extras be in hair&makeup for hours JUST to have them on screen for about a seconden, only passing, just to bring some atmosphere to life. Man I love that. All that effort. How much fun did these people have??
A movie classic series. Happy to re-watch once a year. Well done to all who moved these books to film. Actors & designers. Excellent.
The design of Seneca Crane reminds me of the one of Lucifer Morningstar. As they said, he really looks like the devil.
Whoever acted as Effie did a wonderful job in expressing the character's "capitol-esque" personality.
Every time I look at Seneca Crane's beard, I burst out laughing! 😂😂😂
Ugh. I wanna be in a movie like this. The costumes/outfits are amazing 🔥✨🌈🖤
I remember watching this and being so excited to see how they interpreted the fashion. At the time I had absolutely no care for fashion, but they were so interesting in the book.
We are closer than ever to that fashionism.
the casting and costumes were the BEST and strongest parts of the films
I love how they tried sticking to the books as much as possible. It makes it so much better
CeltycSparrow yup
Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on these films! You guys did a spectacular job!!! The hair/makeup/ costumes, MIND BLOWING!
Best movie ever, all costumes are amazing
I watched all 3 movies and I was only able to watch this behind the scenes now. I don't know, but I cried when I saw the mockingjay pin again. 😭
The artists must’ve had so much fun!!
There fashion and and architectural designs the capitol holds is something of which I want learn more about. It’s fascinating just to look at.
i love these behind the scenes of costuming. i cant believe this one wasnt even nominated!
I really hope that now they're talking about making a movie for the new book the capitol fashion will be done like how they did it here, that would be absolutely amazing
Who doesn't hecking love Effie Trinket
they did an amazing job on these films! such a great adaption from the books.
Jen does look great with dark hair.
When Professor Umbridge became president.
Usui Takumi nooo
No... It can't be...
Stanley's just loving he's got hair 😅
The vision and creative flair these people have, honestly surpasses talent - it literally borders on genius. The fact that this movies costume design wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award - is just flat out unacceptable.
