Suzanne Collins was SO involved with the casting of the movies so it confuses me that people try to say that casting people of a certain race to play certain roles is disrespectful to the source material. Like... the way YOU imagined it when you first read it is not the same 'source material' as the choices made by the LITERAL author and team of creative minds behind these casting choices.

There’s so much more that goes into casting though. And in an interview Suzanne actually said that no one looks like the image she has of Katniss, but Jennifer was close enough. We don’t know what close enough means, but the way Katniss is described in the book is how she looks, and the books are the source material not the movies. The movies were adaptations and they made a lot of changes and took out important plots and characters. And when casting so much goes into it like the actor’s ability, their schedule, and their star quality (to make money). Movie Katniss doesn’t look anything like book Katniss.

@boywonder2120Gale didn’t blow up Prim ffs. Coin did. If you read the book, you’d know that Prim at 14 was too young to be on the scene in the first place. That Coin had to have okayed it… and since Coin didn’t like Katniss (she wanted Peeta at the get go) felt that Katniss had defied, embarrassed, disrespected her, in addition to the fact that Katniss did not openly support Coin as the next president of Panem…this was payback. Gale and Beatee created the bombs… Coin was the one who authorized the use of them. Coin knew what losing Prim would do to Katniss.

There was a distinct ethnic group of people in Appalachia that were olive-skinned with dark hair having european, sub-saharan, and native ancestry. Remember that the people in District 12 are severely malnourished and for a child that can stunt their growth thus making them look younger then they actually are. Yes, but not everyone in 12 was malnourished. If I remember right, from the book, Katniss was well nourished as a kid because her dad went hunting. When he died, it took her a while to get the courage to go into the forest by herself and try hunting and trapping, but she ate well after that. Peeta, too, was eating alright. Merchants had enough money to eat. Not a fortune, but enough. Gale, too, hunted, so he had enough to eat. While the general population wasn't eating properly, the main characters were alright.

Katniss often mentionned how her sister was somewhat « pure », gentle, and it's in that maneurism that she finds her sister in Rue, not really physically.

I think the detail you missed with Mrs. Everdeen was that Katniss said that she ONCE was beautiful, but life wore her down. So I imagine a lot of stress wrinkles.
Katniss is spot on. I think Gale is close but Katniss said they look related so I imagine him looking like her more, and younger. I think Peeta’s descriptions are spot on but I do picture him looking like young Snow more. Haymitch is very close too but he is also from the Seam so I imagine his skin as more olive. Finnick looks too old imo, he was 24 in books.
When I read the books I never pictured Cinna as black, but I don’t think he race/skin color really matters as much as other characters because the Capitol isn’t described with a specific skin color or look. I imagine wealthy people of all races and there are people like Octavia who has made her skin color green. Katniss says that Cinna looks normal for a Capitol citizen who all alter their looks to looks like animals and stuff. But Cinna’s AI is so far from accurate too. I imagine him shorter with short cropped black hair. AI has made all the men very masculine. It’s not that I imagined Cinna as looking feminine, but not so manly as his AI. Cinna is also supposed to be young, like late 20s/early 30s.
But why do they all have chin dimples? 😭

Keep in mind the white privilege that comes with the notion that all characters are white unless otherwise explicitly specified. “They didn’t say Cinna was black” yes but as you said they didn’t say he was white. I actually did picture Cinna as black during my initial read through. Idk why. I was happy with the casting then shocked to see people were upset or surprised. I hadn’t noticed he wasn’t described as black. Idk why my brain filled it in that way.
There’s a book by a Black author, I forget the name. But she subverts this “white unless otherwise specified” trope in her novel by only mentioning when a character is white, and not specifying the other characters. Implying that non specified characters are POC and white is the unexpected other.

As someone of colour myself, I wouldn’t call it white privilege because I do the exact same thing. The way I personally see it is if the author is white or if the book takes place in America or a European country where the majority of people are white, that’s what I’ll default too. That’s not to say I’m against diversifying the film if their race isn’t mentioned either, so long as they stick to what is actually described, like hair colour or what not. But I do understand why it would be the default. It would be the same if I was reading a book that took place in let’s say Japan for example. Unless told otherwise, I would just assume the character would look Japanese. But that’s just my reasoning and like I said, I’m from North Africa so I look more Arab, so it’s not me just defending my race or what ever either, just in case some reading my comment tries to paint me as a racist.

I don’t get how that’s a white privilege. I’ve read lots of books where the character is implied to be black or asian, etc without it being explicitly mentioned. Also sometimes you have to make assumptions if you’re given no information whatsoever. If you’re character is living in England and behaves like a typical British person, chances are they’re going to be right

I think it’s also to the benefit of open casting calls. White women will always have opportunities for roles. Black girls are often relegated to being the best friend to the white lead. If they are the lead it’s usually based on Civil Rights era, Civil War, or during slavery. If they are in a modern day setting, it’s New York as the default or in the city.
How many black lead movies are there where it’s also a fantasy setting or has fantastical elements? Black Panther, Little Mermaid, See You Yesterday.
Black Panther was part of the MCU and thus was an affordable risk at the time.
Little Mermaid was a remake of a popular IP and Halle Bailey was chosen because the director thought she was talented.
See You Yesterday is only original film that I know of… and it’s more of a time travel movie where the lead has to go back in time to save her brother from being shot by a cop…
We live in an era of IP-based projects. You’re lucky to get original movies in animation. If we want fantasy or sci-fi movie or show starring a POC (without “race swapping”) it either has to be a new character, a spin-off movie or show set in the same world to feature that character, or you have to dig through some sort of IP you have the rights to that also has a POC lead.
Otherwise that’s what open auditions are for in non-historical or fantastical/sci-fi based settings.
Support original projects starring non-white, straight characters and you won’t have the bologna “race swapping”. It’s not that hard.

Lenny Kravitz was perfect casting for Cinna, I don’t understand anyone’s shock on that. I think when authors don’t give skin color to characters, it helps the reader connect more with the story and book, as people tend to pull from what they know, their environment and their own experiences to fill in the gaps. This also helps when casting for movies or shows, as a more diverse cast can help attract a bigger audience. Even when they are changed; no reason to be upset, they are fictional characters - not historically accurate reenactment.

Companies are lazy and racist. They prefer to cast black characters in white roles in old stories for "diversity" instead of writing new stories with black leads. If you want diversity, start writing new characters that aren't white and aren't straight. SIMPLE. Companies need to stop blackwashing white stories. And vice versa, stop whitewashing black stories.
Kravitz was perfect for Cinna: because it doesn't matter for side characters. It's just annoying when the main characters aren't accurate to the book. I was pissed when Katniss wasn't olive skinned. But I thought prim was perfect because she looked like she was from the merchant class (which her mother was from). Katniss and her father were olive skinned, and her mother and Prim were fair. Just like I was so pissed when harry potter didn't have green eyes in the movies.

The reason we tend to picture characters whose skin color is not described as white is due to white bias - we always assume the default color is white. Much better than my brain.
Also the description of “olive skin” despite the decade since I read the books (circa 2012) still makes me think of more of a Latino type of skin tone. And “ashen skin” my entire life has been referred as just grey looking almost as if the person wasn’t feeling well type of skin tone and never as another way to describe dark skin. Maybe it’s to describe a dark skin with more grey undertone (cool toned dark?)
Having hard time to imagine people off of the description is not easy without any reference whatsoever so I never much tried but I had a great way of imagining all the scenes in general. I had imagined everything very close to the movie but not too much as I sort of feel they don’t have that level of exact specific details down in the movie.
I do liked Cinna in the movies and with this one AI didn’t do too bad. I did miss the part where they didn’t specify his skin color so apparently I imagined him as black and maybe different hair. I think for the most part he looked most down to earth among Capitol citizens

The only thing that i questioned a bit on the last movie , the Balad of Birds and Snakes was the fact that quite a significant amount of tributes were suffering from some form of handicap, which either can only be explained by the rigging of the Reaping, otherwise considering the bad state of the districts, I wouldnt see much chance for children like this to survive even reaching the age (There was the Down Syndrome girl, there was another Kid who had a malformed face and there was that girl that had a mental disorder which they shot in the Zoo)

I prefer the actors to be able to play the emotions of the characters then look book accurate, except for the fact that Harry and Lily Potter don't have the same color eyes in the movie. I also don't visualize the characters from imagination very well, so I usually see the movie actor as the character.

I'm not an expert in biology or genetics but I find it a little weird that the coal miners from the seam have darker skin although they are less in the sun as e.g. the merchants meanwhile they have very pale skin. I mean it's a work of fiction, but I didn't really get the sense behind that 😅 I mean if everyone in District 12 had olive skin that I would imagine it's a regional thing. But because there are differences in skin colour between these little people I don't really get behind it. I mean the seam and the merchants section aren't that far away from each other so.....idk

I think she was implying that the socioeconomic groups were so different despite living near each other. Also the racial aspect (most people headcannon the seam people as Native Americans)
