    ENGLISH
3D reconstruction of Hagia Sophia of Constantinople as a modern Orthodox Church.
(PS. The result of this project is not after a professional / academic research, but only personal and the goal is purely artistic, without any intention to disrespect the history).
    Information:
Hagia Sophia (/ˈhɑːɡiə soʊˈfiːə/; from Koinē Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, romanized: Hagía Sophía; Latin: Sancta Sophia, lit. 'Holy Wisdom'), officially the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Turkish: Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi) and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia, is a Late Antique place of worship in Istanbul. Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it became the city's Roman Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. In 1935 the secular Turkish Republic established it as a museum. In 2020, it re-opened as a mosque.
Built by the eastern Roman emperor Justinian I as the Christian cathedral of Constantinople for the state church of the Roman Empire between 532 and 537, the church was then the world's largest interior space and among the first to employ a fully pendentive dome. It is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture". The building was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The present Justinianic building was the third church of the same name to occupy the site, the prior one having been destroyed in the Nika riots. Being the episcopal see of the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople, it remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. Beginning with subsequent Byzantine architecture, Hagia Sophia became the paradigmatic Orthodox church form and its architectural style was emulated by Ottoman mosques a thousand years later. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world", and architectural and cultural icon of Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox civilization.
The main goal of this project is to inspire through the history, the culture and architecture.

It is the prayer of every Orthodox Christian, but it is more than that. It is also a promise to faithful Orthodox Christians--reposed in the Lord, living in the Church militant now, & will be in the Church militant after the forthcoming terrible general war, which will be followed by a period of a few decades of peace & prosperity for those who survive the coming calamities (disasters, civil & general war, radioactivity, hunger, disease), during which the only true Faith will be preached throughout the world, & many (some from every group there is) will be baptized into Christ's Body and Bride, the Orthodox Church, to grow in Him & to have eternal life in and with Him. The only true, salvific Faith (as opposed to heresies) will go to every corner of the world from Hagia Sophia.
The End cannot come until the one, true Faith is preached everywhere.

This is so amazing. Research is being conducted regarding the ancient cathedral rite, because the Divine Liturgy as we serve it now is a bit different than how it would have been celebrated then. With this research well underway, I hope they would restore the Cathedral to the ancient way with an actual Amvon in the middle (and no chairs, or at least just a few for those who really need them!) there should start a fund to recreate the chandeliers of the ancient style.

What about converted mosques in Greece, dated back to 1400s? Sorry, conversion is mostly by protecting the art & architecture. I should say destruction and removal. The oldest one in Thessaloniki was even used by Greek as adult cinema after it was sold privately. Bad economy or is this the culture? Was that also what God promised?
Greece is extremely beautiful. And I had a chance to visit Istanbul several times, lately too. It’s easy to understand why Mehmed II considered himself as the new Roman emperor. What Greece failed doing in a couple of decades, Ottomans managed to protect for centuries. Greece has its multiculturalism from Ancient Greece and Christianity. Nothing else left, they erased all others.
As a person who wouldn’t care if it’s a church or a mosque, I’d say there’s no meaning to it’s religious symbolism. I’m not a part of those groups but as a human, I’d prefer seeing these kind of artifacts as museums. They don’t belong to a specific religious group. It belonged once, and it’s history, our approval wouldn’t matter. It’s still a museum though, plus people practicing their rituals, that’s what matters to me. I love seeing it in that context. It would be amazing seeing Christians pray there too, and I believe they should. It would be such an amazing cultural and humane experience seeing it with its full historical context... Still, unlike Greece, I see the multicultural background from centuries ago. And I love seeing frescos of saints together with minarets.
I should say that Constantinople protected its values for centuries. It’s perfectly visible via its population, art and architecture. Erdogan’s failing and hunt for vote shouldn’t represent their history. Constantinople has always been a multicultural city, and there are few kingdoms that could manage multiculturalism. Greece wouldn’t do that for the last millennia, they lost their multicultural values nearly 2000 years ago. Destruction of its own history in modern times is a historical failure based in politics. I hope Turkish won’t allow Erdogan doing the same if he ever attempts, resulting in loss of history for the sake of politics. Not just Constantinople, all regions of Turkey have a unique historical background from thousands of years ago. And I hope religious discourses become history too, so no God’s promises but being able to live together would decide how we exist.

Furthermore, there are only about 2000 Greeks living in modern Turkey (and only about 40000 Christians total) and this idea of Constantinople becoming Greek again is unlikely, given that there are 8 million Turkish citizens living in the city. Having the Patriarchate located in a country that is hostile to Orthodox Christianity defeats the purpose of having a Patriarchate because it can't really function in the leadership role for the church. It needs to be located near Athens or Thessaloniki with its own massive cathedral that can be its own version of the Vatican. Look at the massive church Serbia, a much poorer country than Greece has built or the massive multi-billion dollar complex Romania is almost finished building now. Not to mention all of the massive cathedrals throughout Russia that are as large as Agia Sophia.

@@Lvisredalin But it is never coming back. And more importantly the Patriarchate needs to actually function as a patriarchate. There is no significant Orthodox population in Turkey because of the genocides and population exchanges after WWI. Furthermore, other Orthodox peoples have built their own grand churches and patriarchate institutions in their own countries. It makes no sense for Serbia and Romania to each have a massive cathedral as the symbol of their faith and nothing in Greece. Our population needs to do the same.
