Author Josh Olson and Shirley Harden -- a longtime Columbia, Maryland resident -- describe the history of the town and the visionary legacy of James Rouse, its founder. Rouse's dream was to create a community that respects the land, prioritizes diversity, and offers a rich tapestry of living experiences. Rouse's vision for Columbia was ambitious, aiming to blend green spaces seamlessly into the community, provide essential amenities within walking distance, and establish a city with jobs and shopping rather than a mere bedroom community. The unique neighborhood-village structure forms the backbone of Columbia, fostering a sense of unity and support. One example is The Third Space, a community co-working and café space focused on women of color and open to all.
