A narrow band of appeal here, made narrower by the choice of movement, but a sweet little watch with a lovely dial. Some great colours too if you do wear this style on a more regualr basis. Cheers, Jody

  • @benjaminvis

That green really changes hue so much even in your footage, probably because of changing light sources and white balance. It's really hard to judge what you'll get, but one thing is for sure, dark it will not be. Dark olive even less. That said, I think it might have looked better with a much darker (perhaps dark olive) strap. I usually have a preference for green, but not in this instance. For what it's worth, I think a small seconds 'complication' is one of the best things to deliver on a rectangular watch and it also gives plenty of opportunity to play with art deco patterns. It works very well here, even if the second hand looks a little perfunctory. I mainly regret that all of this effort went in to deliver a quartz watch for occasional use with a movement with a 25 month battery life. That just doesn't really gel with me. Certainly this watch would have benefitted from a mechanical movement that just stops between these occasional moments of use. In fact, the ideal situation for a hand winder, which might have stood a chance to keep that thickness so beautifully thin. I would have been seriously tempted with a hand wound movement, even if it was a highly affordable Chinese one, but as it stands, it's a relatively highly priced quartz (especially after 20-30% import costs) that looks very attractive but has too much convincing to do.

Nice, I like it, it's unexpected from a brand like Second Hour. I have to say, in this case I prefer the more conservative colours. Quartz makes a lot of sense here. "Australia" on the dial is a nice touch.

A nice looking watch but its a lot of money for a quartz (very cheap movement) with a leather strap. It should really be a hand wind for occasional use. You go to the box take it out the watch it has stopped and the battery has leaked totalling the movement, at least the small seconds give you the opportunity to easily check that it's still running if you remember to look regularly.

That's a handsome dial, and the proportions are quite nice for a "Tank" style watch. My lifestyle isn't such that I could justify the expense, as "suit and tie" occasions are currently pretty rare, and this watch almost demands a suit and tie. We're I a bit more affluent and attended more gala events however, I might pull the trigger on this one. Simultaneously subtle and eye catching. Thanks for the review.

They're very nice watches Jody. My wife has two 20 year old Armani tanks (fashion watches, god forbid) but top quality quartz, again Swiss, a nice black dial not unlike the black one here and a very classy champagne dial one, both with a similar curved case and caseback, both sold as men's watches but definitely unisex. These watches here are really very attractive. I like all the colours and have forwarded the website to her without comment. She has become a bit of a watch nerd having caught the bug from me. She may well like that red one and the olive green one too. As for quartz, having experienced it ourselves I do think that it's the perfect movement for these type of watches. They should sell extremely well as classic dress watches.

I really like the design of this watch, and I even like that small seconds complication. I have a vintage Hamilton and a vintage Elgin, both from the early 50s, and their second hands are also really tiny. I think it was placed there more as a means of determining the watch is actually running at a glance than to be able to accurately tell the seconds. Other than the quartz movement of the seconds hand I think this watch really hits a true vintage aesthetic with some modern touches. I would be interested in this watch for a future purchase if it wasn't for two things... First, I rarely need to dress up formal and therefore the couple dress watches that I already have sit in the watch box and very rarely get worn, I think the same would end up happening with this watch. Second, and this is just my personal taste, I have a large 7.75 inch wrist and don't mind wearing small when the watch is mid century vintage like my Hamilton and Elgin watches, but if I'm going to spend money on a brand new watch I want it to fit my wrist a little better. Not that I would want a huge obnoxious version of that Second Hour Memoir, but I would want it to be just a bit bigger.

Nice. My introduction to collectable watches was a 1947 Gold Bulova tank style watch with the same tiny seconds hand above the 6 o'clock. I thought "Second Hour" meant they were GMT watches. I was in the US military in the 1980s and we always planned missions in Zulu time. I would have liked to have a GMT watch then but I don't know if they existed. We just got used to thinking "plus 2" or "minus 6."

I really like it. I pre-ordered the red one. I think at closer to $340 USD, it is worth having to fill the dress watch category that's vacant in my collection. Not being mechanical is not a deal breaker. When nearly all of my watches are mechanical, having a few quartz is totally fine.
Although the intent is for this watch to be a dress watch, I can see this maybe dressed down or otherwise worn in a much more casual attire. Just take it like how many may approach a Carrier Tank.
My initial impressions were that it was too dressy with Roman numerals. But, I have seen and they look fine with a plain t-shirt and pair of jeans. I can imagine the same may be applicable with the Memoir. I'll certainly give it a go and see for myself when the watch arrives.

I rather appreciate the sub-register for the small seconds hand. Not in terms of practicality, but in terms of dial composition. While many sub-registers detract from the overall appeal of watch dials, that second geometric element created by the small seconds register, below the pinion and vertically off-set from the cross hatched center section, seems very consistent with the art deco style. For me, it just works, and works well. It's omission would diminish the balanced (which is not to say symmetric) geometry of the dial.

I've been looking for an affordable Cartier Tank alternatives for while, and I'm glad that microbrands have been stepping up to fill this rather niche gap of the market. While I was hunting around there are only a few brand new watches that I know of that are accessible to me, and those are the Hamilton Boulton, Seiko's SUP series, Vario Versa, and Soner Momentum. I love the Hamilton's design and it's size. It's pretty much a perfect Tank alternative with it's own character. The Seiko SUPs are too large (for the model meant for guys) and the supposedly ladies' model is too small. The Vario is cool, being the only Basculante alternative in the market but I wanted a thin (sub-10mm) dress watch so that's out of the picture. The Soner is pretty alright but the design just doesn't speak to me. It looks too clunky and large for it to be a dress watch. In the end, I pulled the trigger on a vintage Seiko Dolce tank for less that USD130 and it fits the bill perfectly. Have I known about this earlier I really may have second guessed my choice. This is a really good alternative to a tank. It has the dimensions and design down very well. It's distinctively Art Deco just like the Tank but it has it's own charm. I'm glad this exists

Nicely executed, but not a style of watch I would buy. Quartz is preferable for a watch such as this, though - you'd be living in a very different world to me if were wearing this as a daily!

Microbrand tank-style dress watch? I'll go get my Lorier Zephyr. More legible and arguably better specs.
