I was a huge Ali fan, and a very young man in the 1970's. As the decade progressed, i watched him fighting a bunch of no names and going the distance with them. I remember watching those fights and thinking 'he is just toying with them...he wants them to get their 10 minutes of fame..he will turn it on in the late rounds and knock them out'. But he didn't. I realized he really was in decline, and was not the man he was 10 years ago. And he clearly stayed in the game too long, getting brain damage in the end.
A masterpiece... And his instrument was a guy with scarcely 10 fights who never defeated an opponent of skill with any talent or attribute one one expect of someone of a " championship caliber " Name one fight that Leon Spinks showed that he was in a master class as a boxer. Even the debacle in which Ali fought Holmes, there wasn't even a hint or moment of ability. The only ability through the years, was predicated on receiving an exorbitant amount of coverage like any other media-fueled figure between then and now: making the event and participants something other than human beings. Mohammad Ali isn't only a hero of boxing but is a hero of kindness braveness for Islam mayAllah keep his soul in a peace
During this period , not only was Ali slowing down , mentally as well as physically , he was becoming increasingly more defensive in his post fight interviews , which were lacking the humour of old . I think he was well aware that Howard Cossell wouldn't just swallow Ali's explanations , and would let the great man know that his standards in the ring were dropping , as well as the quality of opponent.
Before Ali fought Evangelista he fought starting with The Thrilla then Coopman, Young, Dunn, Norton....the public wanted Ali to fight death match after death match...Ali was having none of that.
Not bad for a man in the early stages of Parkinson's disease, Ali could still jab his way through a guy like this. Cosell at this point had entered his bitterman stage, although he did care a lot about Ali and wanted him to retire. At some point, he (Cosell) quit doing boxing altogether. You either loved him or hated him, but you sure as hell watched him every Monday night.
I like the joking reference Cosell makes about the trunks being so low and close to the knees. Who would have known that would have been the norm some 20 years later. Personally like the Ali style of shorts as they make boxers look more swift in their movement.
@@jarvasedundy1 I was not impressed how in his later years he leaned on his opponents all the time rather than fight. But Howard and Ali were a tag team. Most of it was a show. planned ahead of time.
@@Condorman1 Yes, most of Ali fights from this time frame was mostly entertainment and ego from the late 70s. That's basically all what he had to offer. Younger Ali, would have knocked this dude out by least the 7-8 round lol.
@@jarvasedundy1 So what was your favourite fight. I would have to say all the Ali Frazier fights. Ali didn't know what to do with Frazier's ducks and bobs and weaves and Frazier could really take a punch.
Actually this guy was a good boxer. He was fundamentally sound. He protected his chin, had all the punches including an uppercut, good movement, kept his hands up, etc. He just didn’t have something extra to make him a great fighter.
why Howard called fights past 75 is beyond me. he thought way more of his own opinion than the viewers. watch the last year's of his fight coverage and see the delusion he had of his contribution to boxing. if a match wasn't total excitement for most of the fight he turned grossly negative. only making remarks when a fighter missed the target. now I understand why dad constantly argued with Cosell through the tv when I was a little kid. I have CZcams to watch these old fights and now I find myself picking at Howard. 😊 I love watching the older boxing matches (pre 80s) all the way back. but the only fights I have to mute are the latter years of Cosell. Ali was great .....like most of the champs way back when. "let's go CHAMP.....let's go CHAMP!"
you are right eme nem, though the fight was a mismatch, champs always take tuneup fights to stay sharp, Ali moved scored enough, slipped punches & won. As Howard aged he became cynical of not just boxing but of sports in general, still Howard was news & could sense a moment like he did for Ali/Spinks 2 . Quoting Bob Dylan & perhaps realizing it would be his last great call.
No one gave a better shout out's than the champ. Cosell and the media were clearly cluless that The Greatest was declining right in front of their eyes. He still continued to box.
@@thelevisullivan I don't seem to recall any fights where holmes had anyone's face looking like it had been thru a meat grinder, who had the stronger jab? Ali literally used the power of his Jab to soften up his opponents so that he could knock them out, as he wasn't a 'puncher'.
Ali certainly was past his prime here, but he really slipped precipitously after the first Spinks fight. Even during that fight which he lost, he showed (like this fight) some flashes of his former self. But if you watch him carefully in both the 2nd Spinks fight, the Holmes fight, and finally the Berbick fight, he is greatly diminished even in comparison to early 1977.
It was the Shavers fight that sealed his fight. His rate of speech declined 16% percent afterwards. It’s not surprising he lost to Spinks who beat everything Ali had left out of him. So many flush headshots, Ali’s never been hit more than that fight. Spinks work rate was crazy.
This lacklustre performance was typical of Ali in his second reign. A lot of them were snore-a-thons, I remember. Definitely shouldn't have fought into 1978, and could have quit after Manila. That's all by-the-by of course. Still goes down in history as the greatest champion boxing has ever known.
This was the first pro boxing card I ever attended. The co feature bouts included Alfredo Escalera and Roberto Duran. This was a horrible bout but at 13 years old when I was there, I didn't care because it was Ali and I could say I saw him in person!!

Surely your legacy Will lives on forever....we will never forget you...brother Muhammad Ali...
Rest in peace... May Allah Almighty grant you his paradise... Amen...
Ali wasn’t a mike Tyson. It seems to me Ali never went out to kill his opponent. He often fought at just the required level to beat them.
He also never hit his opponents body.. unlike others especially Ken Norton, really go all out to damage the opponent!!!
Ali fights with dignity and humanity.. a true sportman! We missed you Muhammad Ali. May Allah bless you.
Alfredo un. Grande en todos aspectos.. Un gran kampeon
Evangelista, got smacked around hard whenever he tried to step up in class. Ali, even at this stage of his career outclassed him.
Nuclear_Option ,
How many times Evangelista was drop? Yes exactly shut up!
As world champion, you should really be fighting the best possible opponents. Coopman and Dunn were nowhere near that class.@@BLUTOV
@@steveb6535 you've never been a world champion so what do you know...once again Ali wasn't fighting death match after death match.

No doubt he was the BEST EVER!!

Foot work made Muhammed Ali the greatest boxer ever known
Not bad for a man in the early stages of Parkinson's disease, Ali could still jab his way through a guy like this. Cosell at this point had entered his bitterman stage, although he did care a lot about Ali and wanted him to retire. At some point, he (Cosell) quit doing boxing altogether. You either loved him or hated him, but you sure as hell watched him every Monday night.

Look like Ali is training Alfredo and giving him chance to attack.
Amigo didn't win this fight because his punches were like Foreman's - wild and did not hurt Ali . Ali won easily by scoring punches that connected .
amor 1
Of course al wasn't at Ali level
I like the joking reference Cosell makes about the trunks being so low and close to the knees. Who would have known that would have been the norm some 20 years later. Personally like the Ali style of shorts as they make boxers look more swift in their movement.
I really like what Ali said at the end.
Wow. Howard was really tough on Ali this fight.
No fighter now would get that criticism that Cosell gave Ali. He always handled it well. No one was better
Can you blame him though 🤔 even as a Ali fan. I got bored of his antics. I wanna see him fight. But it was just all ego
@@jarvasedundy1 I was not impressed how in his later years he leaned on his opponents all the time rather than fight. But Howard and Ali were a tag team. Most of it was a show. planned ahead of time.
@@Condorman1
Yes, most of Ali fights from this time frame was mostly entertainment and ego from the late 70s.
Ali was 35,but still played a 22 year old Evangelista...
@Trzn
But Ali was the best ever hands down
Actually this guy was a good boxer. He was fundamentally sound. He protected his chin, had all the punches including an uppercut, good movement, kept his hands up, etc. He just didn’t have something extra to make him a great fighter.

Great comment
Muhammad Ali was a miracle man in Boxing even the way he talk... we lost you brother Ali

Ali il più grande
Menonton video you tube seruuuuu.Pemain terlihat -stamina, fisik stabil +gaya, taktik jadi juara , pemain ny sedikit humor👏.
I bet Cossell is still complaining that Ali is doing it wrong. "Salam to all creeds and colors" Now more than ever!

why Howard called fights past 75 is beyond me. he thought way more of his own opinion than the viewers. watch the last year's of his fight coverage and see the delusion he had of his contribution to boxing. if a match wasn't total excitement for most of the fight he turned grossly negative. only making remarks when a fighter missed the target. now I understand why dad constantly argued with Cosell through the tv when I was a little kid.
This match was in his late career he was past his prime here and a year later in 1978 leon spinks beat up mohammed ali and defeated him.

Ali train him during match 😂
Ali really are the greatest
DReaM ForeveR, "Ali are." Are you serious? When you are looking at Ali, how many people do you see?
you are right eme nem, though the fight was a mismatch, champs always take tuneup fights to stay sharp, Ali moved scored enough, slipped punches & won.

I,m a Welshman ...Loved Ali ....Where on earth as all the great American heavyweights gone ???

I actually like seeing flat-footed Ali. He’s heavier with the jab, and pushes guys back. He resembles Holmes’ style a lil more.
Do you know that Holmes Learned his style from Ali?
@@lasher4202 The difference being that Holmes’ jab was stronger and Ali’s was faster.

@@thelevisullivan I don't seem to recall any fights where holmes had anyone's face looking like it had been thru a meat grinder, who had the stronger jab? Ali literally used the power of his Jab to soften up his opponents so that he could knock them out, as he wasn't a 'puncher'.
Ali & Howard were something to admire. Ya had to be there.
Vapen
It was the Shavers fight that sealed his fight. His rate of speech declined 16% percent afterwards. It’s not surprising he lost to Spinks who beat everything Ali had left out of him. So many flush headshots, Ali’s never been hit more than that fight. Spinks work rate was crazy.
Dancing made Muhammad Ali so beautiful in boxing...
In fact Evangelista was quite a crisp fighter who knew how to punch.
Ali,s style was unique nd beautiful
Simple adorable style even in the Heaven
mohamed ali is the greatest boxer ever live
Ali was out of his prime, but still credit to Evangelista for going the distance.
Walikum slam mohammed Ali ilove for ever you are the best
This lacklustre performance was typical of Ali in his second reign. A lot of them were snore-a-thons, I remember. Definitely shouldn't have fought into 1978, and could have quit after Manila. That's all by-the-by of course. Still goes down in history as the greatest champion boxing has ever known.
Agree. I will always say Ali should have retired after the "Thriller In Manilla" fight.
I will take 5 others as better , Foreman , Frazier , Liston , Louis , Holmes .
This was the first pro boxing card I ever attended. The co feature bouts included Alfredo Escalera and Roberto Duran. This was a horrible bout but at 13 years old when I was there, I didn't care because it was Ali and I could say I saw him in person!!
