- Was supposed to be bay racing... but the wind was up, so instead we raced in the harbour. But with low water it turned in to an intense boat handling exercise.

I’m 77 and after sailing a Cadet, #806, “Tilikum” as a boy I graduated onto Merlins about 1959. The newer boats had Procter alloy masts, but there were several boats that still had wooden spars and narrow planks, copper riveted on oak frames. The newer boats were frameless, edge glued planking. Within a few years they developed from about 5’ 4”-6” beam up to 7’ to 7’ 2”.
By 1968 I had moved on to JOG, crewing mainly in a Kim Holman “Twister”.
Looking back on a lifetime of sailing, I often think the best times were in Merlins.
If I was young again I think kite foiling would grab me.
Best wishes from Aotearoa. Hope you have a good season.
Fantastic! I particularly like the decision-time analysis around the dinghy. On fast unstable boats, I've ended up in similar situations, and it's so fast it's not easy to recall later exactly what the sequence was. Kudos. I can tell a lot of work has gone into this.
cheers Martin!
Great video over all. The way the various views were edited / stitch was really nice. Major work out 'eh ? The course being in the narrow channel. I chuckled at the weather mark, round ... and a 1 and a 2 and a 3 and 'gybing' LOL ... passing that boat when you capsized... You really needed to gybe way earlier. But once you got closer (and with all your speed and the other boats erratic roll) I would have head up a bit, giving him some berth, leaving him to starboard and initiate a gybe right as you passed him, and come out from under their lee bow the way you did on the 9'r earlier. Wicked cool video !
Great vid as usual - what a batty place to sail skiffs!
good practice, but I wouldn't want to race in that channel at low tide regularly!
@@MozzySails Feel your pain. I sail on a very shallow estuary. It's bloody unnerving to capsize and find yourself standing in nipple deep water.
Loving these 800 videos, they look immense fun 🤩
They are!
Now this was just fantastic performance, you guys really rock :-)
Top notch sailing and excellent camera work to bring it to us. Thanks!
Great video the harbour at its best. Good luck at the nationals.
thanks!
what do you use to get the overlay on video ?
Garmin Virb Edit, it's a free video editing software from garmin. You just need to record GPS alongside an MP4 video
Hey can anyone tell me what gear is he using for the analytics. Boat speed , heading and course distance please
I am using a gaming GPS to record, either my edge cycling computer or my remix watch. I then overlay metrics from GPS to the footage using Gamrin Virb Edit which is free video editing software from Garmin.
I have a video on how to do it here: czcams.com/video/ivDctnoQrjc/video.html
Is your speedometer working ok? In the capsize at 9:05 it says that you are going between 4 and 8 knots!
Other than that, amazing video. I'm quite curious about how you handle the sheets between the two of you, it seems quite unconventional the way you do it.
The speedo is a GPS and I dont think being under water helps the signal. But there was also about 2-3 knots of tide too
We have the crew play the mainsheet upwind. That's relatively uncommon in dinghies, but is quite common in skiff like the 49er, 29er, international 14 etc.
The rs800.fleet has an even split of crew and helms doing mainsheet upwind.
@@MozzySails And what about the jib sheet?
@@Kirmo13 the helm trims the jib but it's on a track that runs across the boat just in front of the mast allowing it to tack by itself.
@@MozzySails Thanks a lot!
What channel is this?
it's the Emsworth Channel from Hayling Island Sailing club at the entrance to Chichester Harbour going North
What’s the name of this song?
I think there are 3 or 4 different tracks. What time do you want to now the track at?
