With my right hand, I play strings directly with my nails (not with a plectrum). With my left hand I « pump » the strings : I pressed it completely sometimes (especially when I play the bass line), and then I release pressure but not completely (especially when I play the skank itself - several strings together). This technic makes this kind of « muffled » sound!
