- An excerpt for a 1980's Dutch radio program on the history of The Dave Clark Five as told by Mike Smith, the voice of The Dave Clark Five. In this segment, he updated listeners on what former band members were doing at the time.
Mike Smith never got enough credit. He was the DC5. RIP Mike.
should have been the Mike Smith 5.
A great talent. Missed.
DC could sack them all. His band & one of the few popsters with his head screwed on right. He made the contracts got a proper percentage of sales & much higher than the Beatles I think 2-3% of revenue that they got. He bought the rights of Ready Steady Go & is a multi millionaire times over. Spent quite a bit of it on Botox & now looks like Worf from Star Trek!

Absolutely correct.
Did Mike Smith & members make a lot of money since we know Clark controlled group.
Totally and absolutely agree!
More than just one of the greatest singers on the planet, Mike Smith was a kind-hearted gentleman.
That's good to know!
He was kindhearted and humble. Mike was a wonderful man.
@@brendamadani4969 yes, I seriously miss him.
Mike Smith, within the top ten singers of the 1960s, if not the best on his day, ANYDAY
His vocals carried the DC5. He was great.
The DC5, my most favorite group of that time. Just something so refreshing about them and their recordings. I'm happy they were part of my youth.
Mike Smith was GREAT...one of the top 5 ever
I always love the Dave Clark five. The Beatles, the kinks, and the DC five. Those were my favorite groups growing up. And to this day I still love all of them. I had every album of theirs. Mike boomer smith. What a voice.......
We love you Mike Smith!!!
Without a doubt Mike Smith had one of the best voices in Rock and Roll. I loved the Dave Clark Five and its a shame they split up. I believe they had much more to give and could have evolved into an even greater rock band doing more hard rock numbers using Mike Smith great voice.
Back in the day ,I thought they were better then The Beatles.more R&R to their music.but then The Beatles did what they did.kept on getting better
Mike Smith is among the greatest R&R vocalists of all time.
agree
@George Martin ever heard of Mike Smith?
Mike...brilliant soulful voice.RIP
As a really young boy in the 60s DC5 we’re one of only a few groups I could relate too. Why? They made you feel good👍👏👏👏👏
interesting to hear Mike talk about what the boys did post dc5 !
Mike Smith was the star of DC5 .... the only big talent.
I am so glad Dave Clark managed the DC5 Exclusively. He took care of his band and didn't let the blood sucking vultures take advantage of his buddies. I wish other bands would have told these managers to get lost early on...but sometimes business is not everyone's forte. Anyway, all of the DC5 REALLY WERE GREAT! 17 times (I think) on The Ed Sullivan show. Come on...that's more than Elvis or the Beatles! That time will never be repeated. Thanks Mike for being such a great vocalist with an awesome personality as well. We miss you and all the rest too. You truly were the best! 😋
MIKE was such a super vocalist,so underated,it was extremely sad what happened to him,i still cry and misd hid voice and personality.
Mike Smith was soooo cool. Makes me so sad that he had that accident and then we lost him. It must have been so difficult for him. Hopefully he is hamming it up with John Lennon and George Harrison. Miss them all. Ugh!
Mike Smith a fine singer ! Loved his voice and band . DC5 made their mark . Short 3 minute songs that hook much better than today’s pop.
Same with country music . The old country stars were so much better !
Such a shame. A dear friend of Gordon Waller. He wanted to go to church to light a candle for Mike. Got to the church and couldn't believe the church's were all locked up because of vandalism.
That's shocking.
We went back to Gordon and Jens house and lit all candles and said a prayer for Mike. We very sorry we lost Mike and Gordon. R.I.P.
They were so great! Truly great! I saw them at my first rock concert in Mobile, Alabama where the Shang-Las came out and lip synced their hits. Very disappointing! The Dave Clark 5 however came out and kick all of us attending rocking and rolling! They were for really, really great!
Did they actually play their instruments and sing the songs? No lip synced?
Sure miss you Mike.
The name of the musical, you ask? It's called "Hi, I'm Dave Clark ,the terrible drummer that has to be the center of attention whilst Mike really holds the group together with his admirable vocal skills and keyboard ideas."
Harsh
Sounds like Stevie Winwood with the Spenser Davis Group.
Guess again!
Steve Karno The title of the musical is a bit long 😂
Such a bitter comment. Dave was an average drummer to be sure. But he was a great recruiter if talent and put the band together. He was a smart guy who paid the band members a salary and retained the rights to the songs by leasing them to the record companies for five years after which the rights were returned to him. He told the Beatles and stones to do likewise but they didn't listen. His business acumen has served him well as an executive with Amazon among other companies. And his "shout" videos are successful as well.
The musical Mike Smith referred to Dave Clark putting together was "Time", and it was a huge success.
It was a pile of crap.... Just like DC.
@@valarienewsham4957
How so?🤔
I have always enjoyed your lovely voice on Glad All Over I had this album unfortunately my parents died and I didn’t go over as often as I should have because being an only child everyone was on me and everything if it hadn’t been for God and Jesus I would have been ready for the funny farm but I got through everything but that fire tore me apart I had not seen anything like that, I enjoyed listening to your voice you sound so kind and I am sure you have a lovely family 🥰
That wasn't a pic of Mike Smith in the thumbnail, it was a pic of Rick.
We know.
I just assumed they broke up into bits and pieces.
Have read all the comments I need to mention this, the music business is a fickle business, if you don't duck and dive and play the business at its own game you don't succeed, simple as that, OK dave Clark may have done what is alleged here but the band members had a good run with the band, touring the world, all of the girls, the fame, the adulation etc etc. Still not nice to be excluded from the financial side I agree but until you have been in a band for any length of time you will NEVER KNOW THE BACKSTAGE TENSION. there is always a split in a band, there is always a clique, there is always musical differences, personality clashes, jealousy, someone doing all the work whilst other people ride on the coat tails of others, people wanting more for writing the hits. Now imagine all of the above with millions of dollars in record sales and its like a tinder box. I'm not agreeing with what happened in the dc5 but I understand at least a little why it happened.
Salient insight, Bonkey Dollocks. Methinks that the spellcheck gremlin intervened during your composition - it is a 'clique'.
@@19gregske55 nah, you just need to learn to read mush., look out everybody here comes the CZcams spelling police haha
Not always the case .... Look @ Rush for instance ...... Although it was Neil that wrote most of the lyrics for the band ... They decided right out the gate in being together that they would split whatever royalties among them a third..... A third ..... A third
@@winstonking5683 the hollies were the same yes, I should have put 'most' bands
@@bonkeydollocks1879 ..... Yes ... Allen Clarke and Graham Nash especially were the same as Alex and Geddy .... They were mates in school together and had the same vision .... To hear themselves on the radio and make it in the music business .... But your right ..... Greed and ego plays and has played a major role in the splitting and infighting of many a band ..... It's sad to see but I guess it's the nature of the beast 🙄
It seems that for every page I visit regarding the DC5, there are comments from Ron Ryan or his supporters dissing Dave Clark. I have no idea what portion of them, if any, is true, but in my opinion Ron should have let go a long time ago. It's not good for anyone's mental or physical health to hold onto grudges for so long, and I mean this in a kind way. Dave has gotten on with his life and Ron should have done the same. Dave is residing rent-free in Ron's head. Lving in the past does not strengthen one's future.
They are all over social media dissing DC like they have no other purpose. Too bad they couldn't stop living in the past like he did!
Please upload the entire interview!
I love DC5❤❤❤
Much missed, I should think. I also think the rest of the band were completely shafted by DC. Anyway, RIP Mike.
The idea that DC "shafted" the other four is a debatable comment. At Dave's invitation, they all signed contracts permitting him to lead/manage and they accepted a guaranteed remuneration. Keep in mind that the contracts were signed at a time when the DC 5 were not well known in GB and like scores of other rock bands throughout GB that were either one-hit wonders or never had a top 10 hit song, there could be no assurance that the DC5 would rise to the level of success that they achieved. Dave proved to be an astute manager who guided the group to become the world's #2 rock band from '64 to '66. What Clark should have done in late '64 is revise the contracts to reflect a more generous division of the group's revenue gained by record sales and concerts. He was under no obligation so "shafted" is not the best descriptive. I would suggest that " cheap " fits better.
Hall of Fame and what a group with so many great songs that were not even published or played that would have been hits regardless of the time or the era love listening to them and it will only be one Dave Clark Five always keep going
So many great songs as you say but not a single video showing them playing live.
@@Mister_Pedantic I just found one a couple of weeks ago. They are doing the song ( in19 days) at the Royal Palace. And then, after that, Mike Smith does a kick ass version of Georgia on my mind, with the other four members sitting down and singing background. This is all totally live, and it blew my mind when I found it. And it proves what is very great, tremendous , and under appreciated talent. Mike Smith was.
@@summerboy1976 Yes, I am aware of that video. It's interesting that they didn't perform one of their hits. Or maybe it's exactly what you would expect Dave Clark to do.
@@Mister_Pedantic I was thinking that maybe there was a much longer performance by the 5, but for some reason (from the controlling one, D C who else) it was never shown, or recorded, or whatever, who knows what, when it comes to the sly one. It doesn’t seem possible that they would go on a show like that to do 2 songs. One which was a Mike Smith solo
@@summerboy1976 Probably at this point Dave Clark did not own the original songs outright, that would come later and he didn't want to pay royalties for performing them.
Mike was the DC5 …………………………………….
I luv ❤️💕💕this guys my teenage years 💕💕luv ya guys 💥💕
Mike Smith seems like a true gentleman
...in contrast to Dave Clark
Dave is a gentleman and without him there'd be no DC5. He was the main driver in their success.
@@jamesdunn9714 I agree!
As i have read Dave Clark is so greedy businessman.
I heard that Dave Clark received all the residuals, and not the others.
Song writers/owners get the big cut. DC had the best business sense of all the young lads in the biz and all members of the DC5 did well during their stint.
thats right he treated the band as employees and he was boss , he did not share the money end with the band .
@@miklmiklmtrcycl6009 "Did well"? Dave had 'em on a modest monthly wage and kept all the rest
@@emmetthennessy9962 DC was a greedy b*****d.
Mike Smith # 1
Appreciate the info of what all the members did after DC5
They were great and also their hit Glad all over is played just as my team Crystal Palace
come on the pitch before every game. This has been played for decades and always
will be.
Loved You Mike "Boomer" Smith!!
The Mike Smith 5 would have been more apropos.
Ever occur to you that it was probably called that because Dave might have been the founding member?
@Leon Erin Fuck off.
MIKECNW The Spencer Davies, was named for the founder, but I never heard Steve Winwood, or his brother, say Spencer, screwed them, or stole songwriting credits, Dave was a greedy no talent, he should have been a manager, he certainly wasn’t a musician! The Band would have been just as popular with out him, he added nothing but his name on a drum skin, then they could have had a drummer up to the talent of the rest of the band !
@@joemasse4568 Could do without this (!) at the end of your reply.
Well, perhaps. Cher quit Sonny. Diana quit The Supremes, Michael quit The J5. Mike Smith was great, but I have no trouble remembering the lyrics to ALL of his hits as a solo artist. Like a Coast Guard rescue helicopter team. The news always shows the member who hangs off of the cable with the rescue basket, but don't you think the pilot might be the more crucial team member? DC ran the show and no member left throughout an eight year span.
I love this group from Tottenham.
The video features Mike Smith in the title. But, he is never mentioned?
@tonyrussell5058
I guess the interviewer wanted Mike to talk about his former band mates rather than himself.
It seems this is circa 1985 since he mentioned Dave’s play.
I’ve read that in the 80’s, Mike was writing, producing, and singing jingles for radio and tv ads. He also produced albums for Michael Ball( a well known musical theatre performer in the UK), and Shirley Bassey. He was a busy man behind the scenes !
@@fangirllinda To this day, every time I hear “Because” on the radio, I think back to my high school sweetie. We were supposed to get married. But, we drifted apart when I moved away to college. Right girl. Wrong time. Bittersweet.
Mike Smith was THE SOUL of the group
Ron Ryan was not a session musician he had his own groups he wrote many of D C 5s hits but gets no credit
Oh he does, he is on another video like this one bleating on about what happened 60 years ago still, sometimes life ain't so cute but you just get on with it
bonkey dollocks he has a right to complain him and Clark were like brothers and Clark ripped him off, but back then Clark had “Friends” you couldn’t cross him. I was a big fan of the DC5 and Clark but when i heard what he did i was sickened a brilliant love song like “Because” stolen from Ryan a song he wrote for his wife, and the other hits and sings, Clark made millions from them, he is just a crook.
@@royferguson2297 yea I can see how unfair it all was but to be honest in my opinion this was and probably still is how it happens in the industry. What amazes me is how people think this is an isolated case. It's more or less a standard music industry cliché. I'm not agreeing with how he was ripped off, it's awful but the music business is just that a business, making money, anyway they can. Put my self in Mike's shoes and yes I admit it must have been tough
Mr Ryan legally relinquished his writing credits via a deal with Dave Clark. He made a legal deal. It seems in the last few years that he has endlessly complained, whined and cried to anyone and everyone that he is not credited with songs he purportedly wrote but are credited to Dave Clark. Mr Clark has the legal right to claim writing credits to the songs. Fans of the many Dave Clark Five fan groups throughout the internet are quite tired of hearing Mr Ryan's whining.
DC owned and still owns all rights to DC5 ,,,,everything! And yes, he even bought the instruments.
He done all the contracts & got a higher percentage than the Beatles did. It was his band. DC isn't a moptop fandom type but he pulled all the strings on everything they did. The music biz has always been ruthless but now it's a much different story. The Beatles seem to be robbing me every year now with countless reissues the latest being a 6cd\vinyl special edition of a 35min 10sec length Let it Be album. Kerching!
Dave Clark didn't seem to fare as well over time. Physically, he has a worn out look. He may be well off business wise as some posted here but he looks later in life a little worn out. It's a sad tale in rock music of band members getting a salary and other band members getting the riches as some have posted here. I did not know this went on with Dave Clark but folks posting here clued me in. Still, it sadly is quite common.
Depending on which year you take for his birth (1939 or 1942), Dave Clark is 76-79 years old.
Called age. It will happen to you too. If you are lucky enough to live a long life.
As of 03/05/2021 only two of the DC5 are living. Dave is one of them. So . . . . well . . . he's fared better than 60% of his bandmates.
Another video with Dave Clark talked about Mike literally breaking his neck and being paralyzed while falling from a fence! No mention here or in any of the comments!
He passed away from pneumonia in 2008.
@@DetroitLives313 I guess he died later than this video (Wikipedia): "Three months later, on 13 September 2003, nearing his 60th birthday, Smith was injured in an accident in his home in Spain which severely damaged his spinal cord. He tried to climb a 7 ft gate after locking himself out of his villa, fell heavily, and landed on his head. His spine fractured in three places leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down and in his right arm, with very little movement in his left arm." No wonder it is not here (1980's).
@Shadow Knight Yes, sadly it was after this video. They were a great group. I remember them even though I was just a small kid during the height of their popularity. There are only two remaining members still with us today.
@@DetroitLives313 I have not followed them closely, but have two vintage LP's of theirs. Your comment reminds me of the situation with The Band: only Robbie and Garth left. Time moves on and we're all getting old.
@@shadowknight9807 "only Robbie & Garth"? what about Dave?
Mike Smith should have teamed up with Paul McCartney at the time when the Beatles broke up.
I have always believed that only reason DC5 were so named was because DC bought the instruments. An there were 5 of them.
Phill Wilkes probably true? I think in retrospect they would have liked to have bought their own instruments? Might have cost Dave a thousand pounds up front, but you can bet once some money started, they probably paid him back? Anyhow it was a clever move, because he ended up with more of the money than all the other members combined, He’s a multi millionaire no musical talent, yet he’s credited with co writing some of their biggest songs, yet he didn’t have a hand in writing any songs ! How does he sleep at night?
@@joemasse4568 gotta agree ought have been mike smith 5 .
i heard mike and lenny passed away i hope im wrong, the band was good.
Mike, Rick, and Dennis have since passed
Sad to think only 2 left I think
Not many people seem to mention their Movie "Catch us if you can". Made in the same era as the Beatles films, but very different in that the band do not portray themselves, it at least had a plot and is not a romp as were the Beatles films. Not a great movie, but a good watch.
A tragic end for mike, I don’t know about Dave’s deal except they were the kings of lip sync
not true....where did u get that from?everyone lip synced on tv shows
Hall of FAME... Glad all Over.....
Can't believe what I'm reading re comments about DC and how he did play nor write the songs for the recordings I'm shocked to say the least..if it's TRUE
John Spurn of course it’s true, Dave Clark was good at one thing, painting his name on his drum skin , grabbing as much money as was possible, if stealing songwriting credits was unethical, bordering on thievery, didn’t matter, if I was in that group I would have beaten the shit out of him, and quit on the spot!
Don't believe everything that is written with malice regarding DC, he actually is a talented businessman who knew wth he was doing and some are still living 60 yrs in the past. He doesn't deserve all this bs slander.
They were the Dave Clark Five. Not "DC5."
Always loved The DC5 , they had a sound way beyond its years , l was never able to see them unfortunately but the sound stage show the looks up with the best at the time music was always meant to move you plus some nice ballads always loved the song Because
Hi Dunce
Only in CZcams comments section do I ever hear of Dave Clark ripping off the other members of the group. I have never seen any other comments or complaints of Dave by other members of the band.
He had a look of & sang like Lennon. The thumbnail pic is unrecognisable of him. Looks like hard years or illness.
I thought the the thumbnail pic was of the Three Stooges' Moe Howard, oops.
Dc5 were on the turntable in our house in 63 64 along with beatles manured many searchers Freddie and the dreamers and honey combs and apple jacks great music great times no speed cameras no shoot to kill policy's no bedroom tax or unemployment or council intrusion
Yes good times mate
Speaky english?
If The Beatles had not grown musically and released their first two albums over and over they would have become like the DC5. They would be in the same shoes.
Big "if"!

I thought Dave went on to being a Klingon
Jeez, Mike looks more like Moe Howard now!
I'm glad to hear they're all still alive
Only Dave and Len are.
Sadly they are not all living
Don't care what Dave did.
Don't know, don't want to know? That's sad.
