Underrated recurring bit from this campaign: Caleb counting all of his money like a 90-year-old grandma at the grocery store

As someone who used to be homeless for over two years, Caleb's "trick" with the bread hit very close to home. I actually cried. Jester is telling him he could just buy mittens when it's implied that Caleb never had enough money for a hot meal AND warm clothes.... so he came up with a clever trick to obtain both. I think Caleb is my new favorite character. That was a very subtle and masterfully done character moment by Liam.
Yeah I hear that
Your comment made me want to cry
Ya but jester and boue came from money so it would be weird to them it was a pretty good dynamic all around
Jester and beau are the percy and keyleth of the campaign, either from money or having some sheltered lifestyle in their youth. Likely why they don't understand why Caleb is so cagey about people. Granted this is still barely a couple weeks of knowing these people.

+Mrtak Spielman It's amazing what you can find in places nobody thinks to look, and for how low a price...I've taken to trawling library book sales and secondhand shops and have found several volumes belonging to (nowadays) obscure series that I've been missing from my collection--which given that owning said book is the only way I'll get to read it, not to mention finish out the series, is always a pleasant surprise. On a rewatch as a DM, it's amazing how Matt introduced the Gentlement completely via indirect worldbuilding. Typically you give your party obvious hooks, like the meeting in the inn or like the quest board, but the Gentlement felt like the party found out about him only thanks to their engagement with the environment.
Sometimes Matt's storytelling makes me forget that he somewhat creates the story based on the dice rolls/ interactions the group has in the world.
But you're so right! It feels like they found out about the Gentlemen earlier than he originally planned by Beau stealing the mail

3:07:40 is an incredible roll play. They transitioned the scene from fjord-molly room to caleb-knott to jester-beau in just a couple of seconds and still all of them were in sync and understood what the others were meaning to do and no one talked over the other. That is incredibly hard to do
It relies quite a bit on them actually being in the same room, I think. (Besides their talent and experience, obviously, but in comparison to other AP steams with good actors who don't achieve the same effect.) Which is why Marisha was so adamant they had to work out a "distanced but still in the same studio" solution during the early phase of the pandemic. I only now realized that the giant flask says “sorry Laura, I ate Indian for lunch”
I've always knew that Travis had the brain to lead the group in a smart way. I loved Grog and the way Travis played him but with Fjord he just shines like a neutron star
Meanwhile Fjord's wisdom is like a 7 or something
During the end of VM he stepped out of character a lot to help strategize and ensure they didn’t go In without a plan.
It’s worth pointing out that low stats don’t necessarily mean they have no specialty in some fields - e.g grog being low int but able to strategize before kevdak makes sense.
Really? I find Fjord kinda bland compared to the others, so far. Aside from his relationship 'tutoring' Beau, he doesn't have much of a personality. He's just sorta... there.
I'm sure that will change eventually though, because Grog was usually pretty great. I loved the childlike side of the brute.
@@LoogyHeadBeing able to strategize before Kevdak and the speech he gave after he was defeated was inconsistent with Grog's lack of smarts.
Your character can be dumb and have a specialty within reason, like being a smithy who knows how to follow the same formula again and again, but being able to reason creatively and articulate eloquently requires higher intelligence than a 6.
@@droidgeist well that depends more on what grogs other stats are and what the plan he made as well as the speech i havent watched VM but if his wisdom and charisma was decent then i could see him being able to do it while having a low int because in our own world he have people who are not super smart but can be very cunning and charismatic in terms of dnd int is more analyzing situations, their ability to memorize stuff, and reasoning. while wisdom is more of the coman sense and intuition and charisma is more the force of ones own personality and ablity to charm and be social. i dont know grogs stats but different groups do play different and playing exactly how your satats are is for some not fun.
I love Nott, she's such a complex character.
And wow, Sam is incredibly good at foreshadowing and setting a tense, mysterious atmosphere without giving away too much at once.

Yasha: yeah
Thunder and lightning outside
Yasha: Just talking to god
I’m in awe of how good Travis is at role playing as Fjord role playing as the maligned noble. When he rolled nat20 and then 18, I wasn’t even surprised - like, of course, he’s so convincing even the die is like “oh alright then”
Step one: save village from impending doom.
Step two: overthrow the government.
They can both be the same step if the government is corrupt
Besides that's just the natural flow of dnd
It all just balances out
Step three: profit
Step one: kill some rats in a bar basement
Step eighteen: kill God
I love Caleb's way of speaking. Not just the accent, but his entire manner of speech.
It is "easy" to do an accent or deeper/higher voice but create a new voice for a character means also creating a new speech pattern
Ja!
I keep accidentally slipping into German intonation now it’s an actual problem
i love how the high richter was a snooty, self-important, puppy-hating asshole, then the second she brought racism into the conversation travis and marisha go "yep, there it is, that's all we needed to hear." that actually makes me so happy I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
3:05:04 Sam's reaction to Travis saying he didnt always look this way, it sounded like he was nervous that Travis had created a similar character to knott, just neither of them knew😅
It is so much fun watching people who really like each other play characters who don't really like each other
This is a VERY interesting dynamic to see, indeed
Even better, in Talks Machina they reveal that Nott is serious and Fjord thinks it's all in good fun.

This comment is super old but if it hasn't happened yet I hope they come back here at like level 15 and have completed forgotten and they run into a guard and Matt gets Liam to roll for history and says "that's the guard that kicked your cat."
May the kat-kicker get slain... I honestly don't care how, though I have a slight preference for seeing him get squashed by a Tarrasque sitting on him. Or something silly like that.
Kaleb Bagby - Agreed.
Just throw him on the planet of tarasques that apparently exists, just so he knows beyond the shadow of a thousand doubts that he is thoroughly screwed.
i absolutely LOVE Sam's foreshadowing here. "I need him to become powerful so he can save me.........he can change me, change this"
Travis's reaction to being handed a bowl of food:
"Nah I dont want it"

"Fine Ill eat it"
*looks at bowl*

Jester and Caleb trying so hard to understand each other and be friends makes me so mushy for these two.
At 1:29:46 Caleb mentions his control over fire can be difficult sometimes, and then he says more quietly in a darker voice, “sometimes” once more... gave me chills thinking he was remembering his past, whatever that may be.
there’s been a lot of foreshadowing... i can’t wait to learn the story 👀

Well he did burn that one guy to death right? that kinda traumatized him after seeing what he did.. Could be that?
@@Theories16 Matt mentioned a "wave of memories" hitting him at that moment, so it seems something similar happened once before at least. I'm thinking it might be something similar to Diablo in Suicide Squad. I enjoy Beau so much more, but Caleb and his hobo-wizard attitude is the best in my opinion, especially when he proudly embraces the dirty and shabby look of his character!
@@Wendeta-hq2cpit is a bit entertaining, but I feel like it’s already getting a bit old. Liam always takes these things too seriously and too far. I can see it being annoying to play with someone who consistently pushes a character trait rather than show the character (more accurately) change and adapt to their new lives
Liam is a remarkable actor though and clearly takes all of this seriously and with great dedication. But yea, it gets old when he forgets things and clings to old character traits

Well he does change... it's just that he changes more slowly. It's not necrssarily unrealistic. If he changed at the same rate as everyone else it wouldn't be the same. The point of D&D is that everyone is different and evolves at different rates (roleplaywise, I mean).
After watching all of Campaign 1 with all the times Travis would having these fantastic insights and ideas that were too much for a character like Grog to actually have in game, it's great to see Fjord almost singlehandedly mastermind a minor coup.

They also speak zemnian (German) in parts of the empire (alsace/lorraine in real france) and the north gets colder and is a generally richer/colder area
Are there guillotines in Zadash? (If that helps narrow down the appropriate France time period).
Yes
