- Tour Norwegian Cruise Line's main dining room dinner and see how food looked and tasted like, including which ones that were good and some you might want to avoid. These were from our June 2022 11 night Iceland & Norway cruise aboard the Norwegian Star.
You will see appetizers, main entrees & desserts, and Joann reviewed some of the food (note that we what ordered are for 3 people- 2 adults & a hungry teen).
On some of NCL's newest ships, including the Norwegian Prima, the dinner menu is now fixed. Throughout our cruise on the Star, however, the menu still varied night to night, but many of the dishes are the same as the ones on the newest ships. There was no lobster night on an NCL cruise nowadays, and it's been like that for several years now.
There are 2 main dining rooms. For the Star, and many other older NCL ships, there is the Versailles has French décor & is brighter, and also the Aqua which has more modern décor. Both serve the same menu, & You're free to go to either one for dinner, no reservations required. For fastest service we do recommend you go when they first open, which is 5:30 PM. Aqua does close an hour & a half earlier than Versailles at 8 PM vs 9:30 PM for the latter.
All the food you'll see are included with your cruise fare, no need to pay extra.

We've been on several ncl ships and menus are all the same. Steaks were always tough and prime rib is always tough roast beef. Agree with diner, all the fish is dry. What we do is ask for lemon and extra butter and make our own sauces. Must agree with most of her comments. Had eggplant parm one time, off the hook next time eggplant under cooked and hard .

I am cracking up at the maitre’d response. “No comment.” Like what?! LOL they were clearly mad about it too!! 😂
Lol it was actually more like "move along, nothing to see here". Basically when we were leaving the dining room, the host asked how was the dinner, and I mentioned the "prime rib" was just some fatty steak and he looked aghast and summoned the maître d' who didn't exactly come right away. So we were like "no big deal" and wanted to leave. But the host was insistent. So it was surprising that when the maître d' did show up and spoke to us, all he did was smile and said "oh, okay".

Ah, the menu memories. I went on NCL Encore a few weeks ago (last Alaska cruise of the season) and enjoyed some of these things. Sadly (or luckily) I had been on a diet for a really long time and lost a lot of weight prior to my cruise and even though I decided to have a few menu splurges that week, I just couldn't eat much each day. Stomach had gotten used to very little food, I guess.
So I only had dessert once all week in the MDR (the opera; I agree it was lovely and not too sweet). Happily most of the app and entree portions were small (by American standards) but fine for me (except the prime rib (I actually *got* prime rib, not that steak thing they gave you ) where they put practically a whole ROAST on my plate and I couldn't eat half of it.

I can’t resist eggplant or chicken parmesan when it’s offered and both looked really good! So did the paella. NCL might want to vary the sauce on the appetizer ravioli selection. It was lobster cream sauce every time. 🤣 All the desserts looked good except for the panna cotta (milk jello 😁). Lovely lavender manicure too Joanne!

I like the main dining room menu that changes daily, like the one you show on the Star.
The Prima has the new fixed menu :( I can't imagine the culinary staff would like cooking the same things every night than diners would like eating it. I hope NCL changes it's mind and doesn't roll it out fleet wide.
Thank you very much! 😊 Yeah we're not too thrilled to hear about the new fixed menu on the Prima, though it does seem have a lot of choices with many same items as in the varied menu setup. Hopefully guest feedback can help change corporate's mind!
did you do the specialty restaurants? On ncl, even though I've read that you can opt out of them, we do the deal where you get 3 nights of specialty on a 7 nighter. And I guess we do buffet 2 or 3 times, mdr once or twice. Maybe O'sheehans once for dinner. Seems like it's been a while since we did NCL.
We did actually- on the Star we ate at Cagney's (steakhouse) and Moderno's (Brazilian Churrascaria). Will be putting up videos on those in the next two weeks or so 🙂

I have a question about Carnival. If I get their cheers package, will the specialty coffees in the main dining room be covered under my package?

Day 4 - That wasn't prime rib. Looks like they gave you a strip steak, I love strip steak, but can be very hit or miss in restaurants, or on ships, I've had them that are tender like butter and ones that could not be cut/chewed. Sorry they didn't serve you prime rib. Love the videos. Keep it up!!!
Yup that was no prime rib- would've been totally fine if they went and told everyone that they didn't have it, but they served it and didn't say anything. No biggie! Thanks so much for watching & commenting! 😊

Yeah I hear that they're now going to charge if you order more than 2 dishes per person. We do order quite a few,, though never more than 2 per person. What you see in the video is for 2 adults & a hungry teen. So if you have multiple people you can always order 2 per person and share 🙂

out of all the cruiselines youve been on, which cruise line would you say has the best mdr food? food in general? it looks like ncl has the best.
I would have to say Holland America, Celebrity Cruises & Cunard. Though Royal, Princess, Carnival & NCL are good too- a lot of it depends on personal taste. I must say that NCL is the only mainstream cruise line that doesn't have lobster night anymore.
Hal no longer has lobster. It's an upcharge. Gave up mdr on n statendam and went to lido. At least you can see it before you get it. Miffed they call it one thing and what comes out is completely different.

Circa minute 40:00, this is the perfect view of the elegant decor, the golden lighting, and the overall elegance that marks a typically wonderful cruiship Main Dining Room....an ambience of high class....indeed chandelier-level luxury....even when most guests are attired casually....That is where I recommend every viewer to press the pause button and really take in the panoramic view, while noticing the intricate details....All together now: "There ain't nuttin' like a cruise!"
For sure- the Versailles dining room on many of the now older NCL ships are quite elegantly decorated. "There ain't nuttin' like a cruise!" 🙂
Any fresh fish on the buffet? Cobb salad , is that the only salad option?
They did have fish here and there at the buffet, and at the main dining they would rotate between different salads.
Query about dinner at Versalles: Some dishes did not seem abundant (it is assumed that if it is eaten on plates it is a little less abundant). What happens if one wishes to repeat or ask for a second dish, after having consumed others. Isn't it customary to order more than the classic entry, main course and dessert?
Of course! And you're right some portions could be a little small, so do feel free to order 2 appetizers, 2 mains & 2 desserts if you'd like!
Great video as always. I would think with technology being available these days, the cruise lines would use tablets to submit your dining orders.

how many cruises do you have scheduled at any given time? my friend was ridiculing me for having four cruises booked. he said nobody does that. i replied, some people have nine.
We usually book last minute, but it's super common to book multiple ones well ahead of time. Sometimes you get the best price and of course the cabin you want!

Ordering all the choices will no longer be allowed on many cruise lines, how will you get around this?
Yeah heard about Carnival's new restrictions- not sure if other cruise lines will follow that initiative. We actually never order more than 2 entrees per person so it doesn't affect us.

Our last cruise in NCL Getaway Jan 2023 the food was a problem cold or wrong food delivered dining room was under staffed, or poorly trained or poorly managed or maybe all of those things. Even the Specialty Restaurants were not very good. We sailed on the Getaway in Oct. 2021 and the staff and food was much better.

We are Platinum members so we have been on several NCL ships with no problems or complaints.

this might be a little off-topic, but maybe informative. here is a list of items that are not as described. these are items i have eaten this past week on the Breakaway:
maple syrup is actually 'breakfast' syrup and is horrible,
hollandaise sauce is from a powder, and was cold and bad tasting,
whipped cream is not cream, it is some kind of sugary oil based product,
pork sausage was just a horrible mess that was like mushy sawdust,
honey is clearly fake probably sourced from china,
creme brulee was horrible, it was not like a custard, but more like an over-whipped powder based something,
cream for coffee is not cream, it was coffee mate,
wings in the bar were baked and not deep fried, the skin was like rubber.
You can't make up for quality with quantity (or maybe you can). i didn't starve, but i was disappointed. the cruise line is clearly cost cutting and they have gone way beyond what they need to do. it would be maybe cost them $10 more a week to fix this compared to paying about $200 per person per day for this cruise.
Thank you for sharing your experience from the Breakaway! Prices for the cruises have gone way up, but yeah we also felt that the food quality has gone down vs the past. Definitely let NCL know via the guest feedback survey. I think if enough guests voice their displeasure, then surely they will at least get some of those basics you mentioned improved.

Nope- all the food you see are 2 adults & a hungry teen, and we usually finish 80-100% of the food.

I like to see all the food and description but WHY WHY do she have to smell everything! It’s so inappropriate table etiquette. Please stop the sniff
She’s giving her feedback about the food on a cruise with her family, not hosting a dinner party. It’s not like the other passengers are watching her every move anyway. If one is going to give a proper critique on the food quality, smell is a big part of it.

I dont care about other passengers; who's watching are viewers on youtube to get an idea what to expect and when some folks like myself have to wait every second for her to sniff first before the critique, in MY OPINION, not yours and never asked for it, it is not appropriate. period! deuces
The ravioli, while it looked very good, also looked very filling for an appetizer. I think I would have skipped it and order two NY Strip steaks instead! 😀😀😀😀😀 But hey, that's just me, a true carnivore! LOL!
Hey it's a Freestyle cruise! 😊 You wouldn't be alone in ordering two of those steaks- we've seen some other guests do that as well!
