Until relatively recently, the role of the goalkeeper was seen as pretty one dimensional, tasked with keeping the ball out of the net and making a pass so the 10 outfield players could create an attack. So when goalkeepers like Fabian Barthez went full FIFA and rushed into the midfield, the whole world thought they were crazy. However, slowly but surely goalkeepers started to have a bigger impact on the game. The amount of passes they complete per match has steadily been trending upwards, and more and more managers are looking for goalkeepers that can play with their feet. And when it comes to this type of keeper, the most extreme version is Man united’s new signing Andre Onana. He’s comfortable with the ball at his feet, he’s creative and very good under pressure, whilst also being a decent goalkeeper. His style is definitely not for everyone, the Cameroon international played only one game at the world cup after breaking the record for the most amount of touches outside the box from a goalkeeper, with the manager benching him after feeling he took way to many risks. But this signing is a hint to a changing tactical landscape, and the advantages he brings man united are already starting to be seen.

In 5 games he has conceded 10-11 goals. Yes, absolute transformation 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
😂😂
HAHA
How many has the team scored??. If the team was scoring then the problem could be on the goalkeeper.
Onana isn't the problem for the team. It's the whole team responsible for it's performance
The keeper principal job is not to play with his feet, Oblak is an example of a great keeper that is not even regular with his feet, but teams want to go with trends and at the end they pay for it.

I often find tactical/statistical football channels extremely cringe as I feel they often build a narrative based on weak points and general waffling. This video was the complete opposite. Really clear, concise and the visuals were really well executed.
Really refreshing 👏🏼

Bro do you ever feel like Tifo tries to over complicate things when they're explaining tactics? Sometimes I get that feeling. Maybe I'm just lacking in my understanding of the intricacies of the game but sometimes they sounds like they're trying really hard to make football sound like calculus
@@brittonporter5063 Yeah and it was ON POINT another goat is born in manchester united! 13 conceded in just 6 games maguire gonna have to try really hard to still be the goat
@@Sigmalonsoq yeah 100%. Proper waffle at times
Shout out for recognizing fabien barthez, underrated goalies that many fans considered somewhat on the "failure" side of united GK due to his flairs and eccentricity.
Dude was ahead of his time
Maybe. He was also crazy.
sadly he played in a period where ball playing keeper werent a norm, would be a starter in any top side now
Barthez was a quality goal keeper in my opinion
Barthez bomb that man could get the ball 100 yards no sweat
This revisionism needs to stop. He was good in his first season but that's it he was a poor keeper and made many mistakes even if he played today he wouldn't last long at a top club unless he showed better form than he did at United.
For those of you who don’t know he came from Barca’s academy La Masia but because of Ter Stergen and Bravo in their prime he didn’t get the chance and left in 2016 for Ajax per reports from Barca B, they say he is the best keeper they’ve ever had.All the best in his new chapter
He left before ter Stegan came in mate
He left since Valdez was at top
@@sorryminati4719 stop lying and misleading people here. Do your research before you talk to me too. Let me educate you small. Ter Stergen join Barca in 2014 and he was the second keeper because Claudio Bravo was the first, he fought for his spot and becomes the first and won the UCL in 2015. Bravo left late 2016 so Barca had both Ter Stergen and Claudio Bravo as the two keepers and Onana was very young so there was no way he will start in the first team but the whole plan was to be the second keeper but Onana unfortunately left early 2016 because was concerned about his future and Bravo also left months after.
@YungG1 mate he had left Barcelona B for 2 separate loan spells before ter stegan even walked and left the club in early 2015. He ended up at Jong Ajax. Onana had already by the timeline you're sharing.
Also I do stand corrected that he didn't leave before ter Stegan "joined" Barca
But Onana was well away from Barca before with his loans to Vista Alegre
He almost planned on leaving since 2014 when stegan came in and Ajax swooped on him
@YungG1 also what's with your horrendous English and tone? Lol 😆
@@sorryminati4719 OMG I never said he left before Ter Stergen joined. He was there before he came but Ter Stergen stepped his game up and battled Claudio Bravo to become the goal keeper. The whole point was that Onana would be Claudio Bravo’s replacement but when Ter Stergen came the whole plan changed that’s why he left because he knew he won’t get gaming minutes. And to correct you, Onana left before Bravo left so it was unfortunate for Onana cox if he had stayed a little bit longer he would have been the 2nd Keeper
Your video just made me realize something.
The likes of Ederson, Allison, & Ter Stegen can be said to be ball-playing GKs while Onana, Neuer & shoutout to Barthez😂 are Ball-carrying GKs.
Football has completed an (r)evolution. The playmaker is officially in all 11 positions.
😂😂😂
At least it means, to be successful, especially as a ball possession side, you need 11 players comfortable on the ball and in high pressing situations. One player not good enough on the ball is enough to have a massive weak spot the opponent can expose ie Wan Bissaka, De Gea and Maguire. So mufc had 3 of those at the back. Still Varane is not the best with the ball, he has enough confidence to get the job done. That's why either Dalot has to play or mufc need to buy a new RB in January or next summer. Onana helps massively to evolve with this playing style. Now the patterns must be trained. I think in a few months, we should see more and more improvement
Feels like the high pressing meta just forced the deep lying playmaker even further down.
@@marlo_stanfield4410now I see why our manager wants to bring in pavard
@@marlo_stanfield4410 This makes sense because unlike other sports, football is a game of the weakest link. Meaning the best way to improve a squad is usually (with exceptions) replacing the weakest player in the team. Now it would only make sense that the game would eventually evolve to demand that all players in the 11 are capable of creating attacking opportunities as well as defending. On the other side, you can see it with modern strikers having a lot more involvement in build up and defence
On behalf of Cameroonians, thank you for shedding positive light on the modern goalkeeping abilities of one of our finest footballers 😊

As an Italian INTER fan that saw Onana play many times I say that he is one of a kind because he basically alters the balance in the field; all teams play with 10 players + 1 goalkeeper while the team with Onana plays 11 players + 1 goalkeeper because he literally does two distinct roles.
He is not the best goalie within the posts, expect him to make some errors especially by almost always deflecting the ball and not clutching it yet he is extremely quick and reactive (not even close to Julio Cesar who was nicknamed "el Gato" or "the Cat" because he literally sprung and extended beyond anybody's expectations), but this ability to actually be an added defender in the possession phase is amazing.
Cesar was a freak. That treble winning team was🎉
Those errors in goal are exactly why I don't like GK"s that 'go out there and play the ball a lot' . A GK's job is to save goals, the more he saves the better for the team, as he is the very last resort in a team- if he messes up, most likely there will be a goal. Whereas if he goes and plays the defender role, getting some nice passes, that does not guarantee anything for his team, as the other team can just sit back a bit and let him come, he is not going to dribble everyone and score. and if he does make a mistake inn the back with a slow pass or a misplaced one, that there is nobody in the goal, which Onana pid for in preseason. The GK is the person to take the less possible risks in a team, because if he messes up, it's game over (look at Mendy against Real Madrid 2 years ago I believe). A keeper's job is to save goals, and that's about it. if he can do a bit more, very well, if not, so be it. There are a lot of GK's mistakes that and up in a goal, or goals that could have been saved if there was a better GK, and very few cases that the GK's contribution to the goal was crucial (assists by Ederson and Alisson) - but that is different, as it was from catching a ball and pass it forward for the striker, not related to what we are talking about here at all
Did you mean the opposition is getting an extra player?
To many coaches go with the trend, Onana es a decent keeper but that is it, he will cost more points to his team for his mistakes and inefficiency between the posts than produce them with his passes. @@danielsingeorzan2808
As a United fan for the past 15 years, I loved de gea no doubt, although his performance during the fa cup final last season was a perfect example of his poor long passing skills when he was pressed. Every time he received the ball I was shouting at the screen ‘do not kick it to man city ffs” yet he did exactly that every time. Onana though, showed great confidence on the ball and quite frankly I’ve never seen a goalkeeper with his composure while being pressed. I think he is the final piece of the puzzle of our current defense line and I really really look forward to his performance against the big 6 in the next season
Valdes, Neuer, Ter Stegen, keepers with better footwork
This it’s going to go really bad or really good. I hope I’m wrong.

Funny enough, years back in our 5-a-side games, I would routinely come forward as the goaltender (my standard position in full-pitch games) as I found it gave my side a numerical advantage. I would draw an opposition player toward me, leaving the opposing team with only three outfield players to my team's four, while the opposition goalie would stay rooted. It usually worked wonders. I did this with no coaching from anyone and never knew the significance until recently.
Wow well done 👏 👏👏

Great video, one of the best videos on youtube informing viewers on the significance of Onana. The graphics made it easier to understand and follow. Superb content 💯🔥
Barthez was sooooo ahead of his time , he should become a coach
Manchester United is currently in 8th place in the EPL, not the transformation they were hoping for!
Onana is a a good signing.
Dude is even on higher level than Ederson and Alison in terms of ball distribution. People say Onana dribble will have mistake and lead to fatal goal. I agreed, this is Onana full package, meaning that he has world class ball distribution skills, but he takes risk and risk may lead to mistake. He will minimise the mistake.
Onana said in an interview "i take risk and i know that. I am not prepare to make a mistake, but i know i will eventually make mistake. If i make a mistake on Sunday, i still need to go to work on Monday. If i don't take risk, i will not cause any pain. I receive the ball and make clearance, throw the ball away. But i will not help my team build up".
In terms of overall performance debut, it's a massive upgrade from Degea. I know Degea is a world class shop stopper, buy he stays at his goal line, never comes out to help, pass the ball to opponents etc. With Onana debut, you can see his
1 impeccable ball dribbling
2 Great mind games
3 Great body acceleration
4 Great first touch
5 Accurate curve + Accurate weight to each pass (comfortable for receiver)
Not just a CB-playing goalie, his ball distribution is Pirlo level (if you really watch football. Also when he pass the ball, he moves immediately to another open space location which gives defender one extra passing option.
Numerical advantage, i trust you all football hard-core fans watch every Man Utd games for the last few seasons. You understand when we are pressed at the back, we have basically no choice but to pass to Degea at the back, and then clearance which has no aim. And literally every PL team know how terrible Degea was with his feet.
Now, with Onana, no coach wants to press him, otherwise they will fall into Onana trap . Not only his distribution skills but because Onana has great vision, and can ping the ball 50 to 60 metres. (
U totally get it 🙌🏼👊🏽

Amazing how the game is changing. Even 4 odd years ago when I played academy football I was scouted on the basis that I could hit a clean 40 yard ping just as well as any of the central midfielders, absolutely nothing to do with shot stopping
Yes. Defences vs MU are lightly to try a tighter tougher low block, so MUCH BETTER tika-taka & imaginative energy up front is required (SO lacking, even with Rashford on form, in recent years); lots for false shuttle runs in behind, perhaps - tiring though these are.
Also, getting good at chipping long shots vs the keeper must surely become more common - should be exciting!
And I think that the good lung-busting recovery run is something the FBs must come to fully accept more, as teams work on their transitions. I haven't seen MU's first choices as so keen on that. (And regarding this, thank goodness that the Maguire era is now over. Ha!)
Feel sorry for DDG in not being able to quickly adapt his impressive skills. Such is work life for all of us!

In the next 10-15 years, academies will try to produce gks who are not only good shot stoppers and technical, but also very quick ones to be able to play as high as possible so they can both support the attack and can run back to the goal if possession is lost
What? 😂😂
Nah won't be next 10-15, academies will already be pivoting to try and get ahead of these tactics
