It's incredible to me that the same company that built the ETR 500 and ETR 1000 also built some of the worst trains and trams of the last 30 years.
Etr 1000 has been projected by Bombardier. Ansaldo Ferroviaria just built it in its factory. But, since Ansaldo had huge financial troubles, the factory has been sold to Hitachi and now it's working great.
Etr 500 has been manufactured by the consortium TREVI, (Ansaldo, Breda, Fiat Ferroviaria, ABB Tecnomasio, Firema Trasporti).
Etr 500 is also a 33 year old train. Ansaldo was very different at that time. Not to mention in the 30s when they projected and built the etr 200 (one of the fastest and most modern train on earth at that time), or in the 50s with Settebello and Arlecchino trainsets.
@@fecciargento5102 Oh yes, ETR 200 was way ahead of the time: it already had bogies between the cars and its design still makes it one of the sexiest looking trains of all times. I hope any of them is preserved. Stiil remember the times when they were in regular service as "treni rapidi" which I couldn't afford at the time.
No, Freciarossa is 60% Ansaldo Breda and 40 Bombardier. V250 has many problems indeed, but the low price tag always comes with a price.
@@radopetrov4727 Frecciarossa 1000 is Zefiro 300 project. You can find a variation of this train in China (Zefiro 380) with wide carbody.
Mitrac engines, Flexx Speed bodies, carbody and open tube architecture are from Bombardier. So what do you mean when you say that it is 60% from Ansaldo?
It's almost as if trains for the domestic market are designed with a higher standard of quality.
Despite the lacks of baths for a train like this, I traveled with the Albatros a lot and I love it. It's just like a train should be nowdays for me. Can't wait to travel on it again! I tried Premium and standard class, now I have to try business class with larger seat!
As long as these trains don't cause service disruptions, I think Trenitalia made a good choice in getting its hands on these older but cheaper trains. At the end, seeing the amount of people they move it's simply more revenues for the company. I'm sure when Trenitalia will decide to change these trains for newer Frecciargento ones, they'll buy a newly made train for the whole service.
I went on this train last year and quite liked it, I didn’t notice the noise you complain about.
they totally refurbished those trains.

12:31 *Trenitalia Frecciarossa wants to know your location*
I really like these ETR 700 "Albatross" units. Yes thats their actual name. They had issues before but theyve had them ironed out and its made a pretty abysmal train into something decent. Admittedly there's gaps and issues but considering its history it could be worse.
I think it's an ugly looking thing, though arguably that's better than a bland looking thing. Might even be a future classic give or take 50 years.
In the Trenitalia's fleet this is probably the poorest high speed train in terms of quality. But of course this is also due to the really high quality of the other trains, especially the Frecciarossa.
Quite loud ambients and some sensors "not smart" are for sure there and this is bad. Anyway, to be honest I wouldn't criticize so much the lack of comfort (very similar to a lot of similar high speed trains in Europe) and the plugs (I think you were really just unlucky, every seat has a usb port and a plug that has always worked when I travelled on this train).
For the guys writing don't buy trains from Italy I just respond that one of the most beautiful train of the world, the Frecciarossa 1000, is entirely constructed in Italy and some Frecciargento and Italo's trains as well. So don't be prejudicial!
I think the issue is with the AnsaldoBreda trains that weren't designed or made in collaboration with another train manufacturer. Both generations of the ETR 500 were built by consortiums of multiple companies including AnsaldoBreda. The Frecciarossa 1000 was developed with input from Bombardier. The various trains including the Fyra that were built by AnsaldoBreda with small amounts of design input from companies with less experience in train design were the ones plagued by issues. The problem isn't with Italian trains but with AnsaldoBreda trains, but because AnsaldoBreda trains were the only trains exported out of Italy people judged them as Italian trains. Hitachi took over AnsaldoBreda's operations in Italy and the trains they make seem to be fine showing that it was an AnsaldoBreda issue not an issue with how Italian people were working.
secondo me il frecciabianca è molto peggio del frecciargento, se lo si vuole considerare un AV anche se dubito fortemente che lo sia davvero
The FYRA wasn't the only crappy train that AnsaldoBreda managed to produce, though. The Danish IC4 trains and the order for trams in Gothenburg also turned out disastrous. They had a long history of making big promises to win the contracts, and then utterly failing to deliver on those promises. They also produced some trams for Boston that had a lot of problems, IIRC.
Then, AnsaldoBreda was bought out by the Japanese company Hitachi, and became Hitachi Rail Italy. Since then, they've slowly been improving, but some of HRI's trains still have a lot of problems! The new "Azuma" intercity trains for the UK are not unreliable, but they're known for being noisy and flimsy. However, they've been getting better over the years.
The ETR 1000 was built as joint venture between the Canadian company Bombardier (which has since been bought out by Alstom) and Hitachi Rail Italy. So even though it was built in Italy, it wasn't a purely Italian project.
I am certain that Italian trains will keep on getting better and better - but there's a good reason why people are still distrustful of them, and that reason is AnsaldoBreda.
@@wasmic5z when the Frecciarossa 1000 was designed and the first 50 units were built, Hitachi Rail Italy wasn't a thing. Also basically 90% of the italian rolling stock was mostly made by Breda at Pistoia, and all those trains worked fine
@@wasmic5z @wasmic5z the Azuma trains (class 800) were built in Newton Aycliffe with bodywork made in Japan, there was no involvement of Hitachi Italy. The class 802 (known as Nova 1, Paragon, or IET depending on operator) were built at Pistoia in Italy after Hitachi took over AnsaldoBreda as Newton Aycliffe was at capacity. The initial Azuma/class 800 trains (built from 2014 onwards) that had some issues were all made in the UK (with bodywork shipped from Japan), construction on the 802's (made in Italy) began in 2017 so I don't think this is a fair criticism of Italian train manufacturing.
Trenitalia did a great job with the refurbishment. However, you cannot change a duck into a swan. It remains a crappy train.
It never was crappy, just not a high speed train. It never was intended to be, so it was forced to be something it was not due to the Dutch being ultra cheap and not listening to people telling them to go with tried and true designs. Like Siemens designs or Alstom. Heck you don't even need a ICE clone, even their non highspeed designs can reach 200+ km/h, more than plenty of what was needed for this line.
But the Dutch wanted a High speed line, for pennies on the dollar. Rather than a normal train that goes 200km/h for the same price or a high speed one for more.
Quel treno non fa schifo
A bit like the whole dutch train system...

Interesting that it still carries the old number 4883 (4:22), which identifies it as one of the former Belgian SNCB owned sets
4:00 the hilarious external design of the train (shaped as a duck/dutch face)
was explicitly required by the initial Holland railway authorities
the designer Pininfarina just renamed it "Albatros"

Belgians and the Dutch: *PTSD intensifies*
Apparently, it wasn't all AB's fault for the Fyra failure - AB did accuse SNCB/NS for running the trains incorrectly in cold/icy conditions.
It's sad to see the technical problems of this train still haven't been fixed, though. Nice video! :)
Thank you Mr Simply!
Thanks for the review, Thibault. Altough the train still isn't perfect (and sometimes encounters problems - which has been shown in trip reports from others), it's nice to see it hasn't been scrapped. Shame the problems could not be resolved (for whatever reason) when it was running in Belgium/The Netherlands.
The Fyra debacle was a HUGE thing here in NL... Interesting to see what eventually happened with these trains! I always thought the issues were a bit exaggerated but watching this video, it's a flimsy train indeed! Makes me wonder what would happened if NS/NMBS kept it...
Nothing. Because this trains lost the license for running on the tracks. They Tried to fix it in the Nederlands but the trains were too bad to fix. The trains were send back to italy and they hoped to get back as much money as possible. Now there are very old and slower trains running on the high speed line for since the fyra stopped. They also have many problems but at least they dont fall apart on their own.
NS has bought new Alstom Corradia Stream (Intercity Nieuwe Generatie) trains which will run the former Fyra route.
They only run 200 km/h compared to the 250 km/h Fyra, but hopefully they will actually be reliable.
@@OntarioTrafficMan It's really unfortunate since the HSL allows for trains to run at 300km/h nearly all the way Schiphol - Antwerp. The Thalys (with a 300km/h top speed) saves about 35 minutes compared to the current IC Direct (top speed 160km/h) on most scheduled departures. If all the trains had a higher top speed that would probably allow for better scheduling and even faster services, especially for Amsterdam-Rotterdam.
@@stocks_9750 no the replacement trains are slower.
@@stocks_9750 Dude, the ETR700 is shit.

Good video. Bad train. Great report...viewing the grand and beautiful station in Milan makes this video worthwhile.
Great video thank you and well done!!
ansaldo breda also made the danish ic4 train that sufferd so many problems and was extremley late
I get to do this trip in July when we go from Paris to Milan and then Venice. Looking forward to it.
It was certainly mains frequency. If you were sat in a car with the pantograph, it was probably the main transformer. Not good! The higher pitched noise when on the DC lines was probably the thyristor power converters for the motors.
Thyristor's haven't been used for decades, and they are passive components that can't make any noise except a bang when they fail. High power electronics are made with IGBTs these days.
@@Hans-gb4mv I'd forgotten I was talking to railway enthusiasts. I used thyristor to indicate the switching devices. The noise is produced by the switching modules as they commutate. Some Austrian locos even play part of a musical scale as they start.
Wat about The Taurus locomotive i.m from Holland they.re not allowed to the NL such aan shame. I would love to hear it accelerate at the trainstation 😊😊agreat and musical🚂🚆🚄
In Italy it received a real chance. In Belgium and the Netherlands not at all.
Sat in the train from Bari to Venice. Also had that strange noise, but then for 6 hrs. The ETR 1000 is way better in my opinion
I traveled one time with this train when it was from NS in the Netherlands and there where these grey doors !
2:59 Wow that graffti artist is aware of the of Fyra's controversy and failure, and that guy vandalised with "DON'T BUY TRAINS FROM ITALY", i think he was caught but he said "well these trains are crap and im aware to these failures!"
But these trains have a new life in Italy tho, and didn't encounter the mess that was happened on Fyra........kinda
TRES bele video je kiffe tre beau train italien
I took the Frecciarossa on this route back when they had food at the cafe. It was quite tasty.
Great job friends of trains!!!!
Amazing.
Though it is not really an aerodynamic design, I like that unique, front of a car like nose design..
Sad that the fleet was not so successful…
I saw one of those Frya's when I was going from Rotterdam to somewhere, can't remember where,a few years ago when I was in the Netherlands little did I know they wouldn't be there long!
I just rode on one of these when I was in Italy and it wasn't bad. I didn't notice the noise and the doors worked lol. Maybe it's just my low American rail expectations but I don't think I would've thought anything of the train if I didn't know from before.
I hardly ever see you complain, so this was probably even worse than it looked. Sorry you got stuck in the bathroom - what a mess. I hope your next trip is an amazing one
Nice video 📹
Very nice and beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Refreshingly honest and objective.
That noise would creep the bejezus outta me...
Looks like it would be a nice trip otherwise... on a different train!!!
Thanks Thibault!
As a Belgian (and railroader with SNCB) I still get goosebumbs from the word Fyra 😂😂
Are you involved in pedophily or was abused by your parents when a child?
merco pour cette publication sympli railway
I think there are going to enough Dutchies like me and Belgians who are curiously going to watch this video :-). Good that they managed to get it working properly eventually!
Nice Video!
I think Milan as a City is not the coolest, but the station is just great. Best one in Italy!
Nah its ugly
Milan is a tipically "love at the second sight-city" - it offers much hidden treasures even if it isn't a flawless beauty.
milan it’s fuller of hidden gems, at first sight it’s quite normal to think it has a few things to offer. do you know that i live in milan since i was born and i discovered some beauties of this city only this year? hahaha
Ding ding! I'm a tram and I approve this video!
What is it with trains these days having concrete for seat padding? Every new train seems to go that way.
I did the Milan to Venice journey in the summer of 2017 on the Frecciarossa 1000. It was a great journey. I do not fancy the 180 miles (280km) journey aboard an old Fyra train - i knew trenitalia were bringing them into service after years out of service - that loud electrical noise in the video is awful - they need back in the workshop for that to get fixed. The hard seats are like the blue hard faux leather seats in FS regional train carriages which i travelled on my return journey from Venice to Milan - changing at Verona - from an FS double deck regional on to a Trenord train.
Thibault, what are your top three stations in europe and why?
The story if the Fyra reminds me of a story that goes almost the same, of a train I Denmark the IC4 also build by… you guessed it, AnsaldoBreda.
That train was also, as you might know, plagued by technical issues and delays, although I do not know if DSB sued AnsaldoBreda 🤔
Madrid's metro also bought trains from AnsaldroBreda and...well, their traction motors had a tendency to fall to the tracks. They are a maintenance nightmare.
HOWEVER AnsaldoBreda is no longer exist because HITACHI has absorb it and change it's name to HITACHI RAIL ITALY
And their (Hitachi ITALY) seem to be look quite well.
@@Headbreak1 Exacto, no te olvides de los descarrilamientos en la línea circular donde tienen prohibido rodar.
'denmark' doesn't exist
@@RedRocketthefirst what do you mean?
Great video! Though I think the nose of the train is still quite ugly, the whole thing looks so much better in that smart Trenitalia livery.
They really need to get some audio experts to pinpoint that noise, find the cause, and fix it. The automatic door sensors should be easier to fix, unless you're invisible, in which case you're out of luck. Thanks for risking your life in the name of transport, Simply 😉🤣
Dude yes! :D
How would you compare these with the ETR610 or an ETR4XX (as that is probably the direct comparator)? The ETR610 is amazing on the outside, but (like you), I found the ride problematic, and the interior not comfortable (for instance, there was a bin where I wanted to put my knee). Although the seats in the UK Pendolino are horrible, the ride has been much better than the ETR610, so I was left quite disappointed, as I had been really looking forward to the ETR610. I haven't been on an ETR4XX. Apart from the noise, the ETR700 looks like a really nice environment, and it seems alot smoother than the Pendolino. And to the V250 haters- it got to its end destination without falling apart or catching fire- what more could you ask?!!! I think it will be interesting to see how much life Trenitalia gets out of them. Amazing when you realise they first started building these trains in 2004, so some are over 15 years old, but have only just started being used in regular service!
Love 🇮🇹
Thanks for the video Simply, i like of this train the italian nike-name. The duck and Multipla Is very beautiful name. The most problem of this train in the few toilette. The train in good to a short journey, no to long journey, for example from Milano to Lecce. Bye
Wow so quiet! The Italians have such style with everything
Useless
4:31 You can still see the brakecheck-indicator. I don't know if its mandatory in Europe. But here in the netherlands it is..
You are talking about the little red/green indicators for brake status, right? Here in spain lots of trains have those as well, although mostly useless because they always end up covered in graffiti paint 🤦♂️
@@osasunaitor Yup!
I had a copy of the original report by the Dutch train maintenance shop that assessed this train 10 years ago. Sadly i don't have it anymore, but it was devastating.
I tried to photograph a Fyra from Amsterdam to Brussels in the last week of 2012 on the Dutch-Belgium border near Breda, I was freezing my b*tt off, and it drove by so fast (then) that i didn't have time to focus properly. Alas, a week later the service was discontinued, the only photo i have of it is one of several trains standing in a marshalling yard somewhere near Amsterdam, waiting for better times.
Honland trains workers are better like vetrine workers, belgian involved in pedhophilie..
only a few Fyra trains were eventually repaired. Unfortunately, we still have no successor in the Netherlands and then I wonder whether the trains could not have been completely fixt here.
Its not the FYRA experience I used to have when working on these trains. The bolts of the light fixtures flying around your head, loud bangs from the roof when entering a tunnel, random odd emergency brakes when flushing a toilet…. Yeah great stuff. Opened a bottle of champagne when they were banned to operate.
Lol, emergency brakes when flushing the toilets, really??? XD
that is why when tracks are covered in snow dutch trains do not run?
The 1000 looks good bacause it was bombardier that have made the train with AnsaldoBreda .
AnsaldoBreda was taken over by Hitachi and some of the IETs for the UK were built there. There still seem to be the same issues with build quality, though hard seats 💺 seem to be universal these days. Interior noise levels didn't seem too bad apart from the hum from the transformer (which would presumably only affect the pantograph coach), though, and ride quality seemed to be reasonably good
The problem was just this kind of trains they made and still are making great trains such as frecciarossa 1000 and other great regional trains
It seems that AnsaldoBreda is the most professional Controversial train builder from IC4 to the Fyra, glad they got bought up by Hitachi
That Noise sounds like someone left their Phaser or tricorder on by accident

hey there if ur gonna come to the USA number 302 and 301(ALC-42 engines the newest on the fleet for Amtrak) is leading the empire builder it already had it's inaugural run
I arrived in Europe (in Brussels) on January 18, 2013 and I still remember there was a LOT being said about this train. I'm so glad I paid the extra $$$ for Thalys to go to Amsterdam that day.
That said, Thalys was also a disaster when I took it to Paris from Amsterdam a few days later due to minor winter weather and a train that didn't show up. It was, however, memorable because I got to travel in the small "meeting room" compartment at the very back of the train - sitting next to none other than Judith Sargentini - an EU MP. A Karen who was assigned to my seat tried to make me move, but because seat reservations were suspended as a result of the issues, she was told to sit elsewhere. It was also bad because of a 160 km/speed restriction, which meant it took around 6 hours to make the trip.
What a trip! Probably not the european train experience you were expecting...
@@osasunaitor but it was funny when Ms. Sargentini told me to stay where I was and politely told off the Karen.

Simply Railway must try the Argo Bromo Anggrek train that's legendary train in my country
Although I’m glad we’re replacing them with higher quality Coradia streams, I am quite sad that the speed from the trains will be downgraded to 200kmph compared to the Fyra which could do 250kmph
True, but it also means the train will be a lot lighter and quicker, making it convenient to use them for domestic 140 km/h services too. With a heavy and long train it would be way less convenient
Fyra was such a massive fail by NS (Dutch Railways) , still NS sucks hard, trying to get better, but can’t manage to release new trains
Does this train pass by treviglio?
I'm not too familiar with Italian hsr. I love bergamo and treviglio and the only few times going to Milan I used regional trains.

Do they (hsr and local tracks) link together at some point or is the hsr solo until close to the stations? (like frankfurt Cologne hsr)

Great video once again!! Bar/restaurant cars still closed? Last summer, besides Italy, I went to Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France on my 30 day first class Eurail pass. I would get a migraine listening to those train sounds!
Omg. I think being locked in the toilet for 20 minutes and having to break your way out would absolutely make this train an epic fail. Even arriving in Venice wouldn’t make up for it.
I assume it’s cheaper to buy old equipment and “refurbish” than buy new. And it looks like there were plenty of customers but I wonder how many were repeats.
well... probably most of them, you have 3 ways of doing this trip you either use the highspeed service to bologna but doing so takes more than 3 hours and is double the price, use the regional service that requires a change but still takes more than 3 hours of travel time but in a straight line... or you use this highspeed train with a travel time of 2 hours and 30 minutes at the same price of the regional service... it's basically a no brainer, things will probably change once the high speed high capacity railway line currently under construction will be finished, but as it stands it's a reasonable service.
oh and I almost forgot there is also some NTV service on the line and depending on the pricing it's highly competitive with the frecciargento
Probably the train is not top quality in terms of comfort, but it has not yet had significant safety problems, so make two considerations...
Milan station is awesome.

It seems beautiful but it sounds awful! It's like you said, someone is having a hair cut or the "plane" is falling. Let's hope it gets better with time, crossed our fingers on that.
Milan Central station is beautiful. The train was noisy, seats looked uncomfortable, automatic door opening not functioning. Not a very good make over of a dud.
Thanks Thibault for sharing.😀😀
Ansaldo Breda? Isn't it a manufacturer of equally failed IC4 in Denmark?
Yes
Reminds me of Denmark's Italian trains, right down to the failing doors. And at least those were good-looking.
But Milan station is always impressive!
That's the thing with Italian products. They look great, but the quality...
@@milomhoek are you telling me this train looks good?
This doesn't even have that redeeming quality.
@@user-kw9qu2gz8v I am sure he meant the Danish train was looking good, the IC4. It is in service there, but still not working well.
@@milomhoek Everyone makes mistakes, even the great germans when my Audi A7 (100k € car) got its start&stop system broken. Unfortunately, they couldn't fix it, but they're germans so best quality, right?
@@user-kw9qu2gz8v Ok true, haha
Can you please do a Tfc journey?
Coach 1 noise free.
