Not that rough, heavy kissing is ever BAD, because I'd watch the hell out of them kissing that way...but this moment, their first kiss, it made it so much more real for it to be just really sweet and gentle and innocent.

the entire show i was convinced that ed and stede‘s relationship is and was gonna be written as something platonic. why was i convinced? because we already had lucius and pete. i was so brainwashed by years and years of films and tv series not daring to bring the gay subtext of two main characters to the surface and rather checking off lgbtq+ rep through side characters that never in a million years world it have crossed my mind that there can be a gay main love story when there’s already gay side characters. isn’t that sick??

I have so many emotions! First that fact that a queer ship that I loved became Canon.The fact that it is two middle aged men. I cried. But then as you watch it you see Ed's vulnerability, his gentleness, his over eagerness, he is so excited , uncool about his love for this man. Stede on the other hand is clumsy, and trepidatious. Like he never really felt/experienced true romantic feelings so he didn't recognize them until Ed kissed him. Mixed into that is deep guilt. For the family he left, for Ed giving everything up for him. Like he can't bare to be seen the way Ed sees him. Omg this silly pirate show has got me gal

Taika and Rhys are real ones for being secure enough in their real life friendship to deliver these adorable pirate boyfriends to us

After watching shows like Good Omens and Hannibal and stuff I actually thought that this was gonna be one of those shows where the only reason you know the characters are gay is because the creator said it once at a convention or something. I watched this show start to finish with my dad and I literally did cry when they kissed. My dad is extremely supportive and open-minded and he loved the show too, but I know he doesn't understand why I cried. This explains it perfectly.

stede had to leave. you can see in this exact scene that while ed is ready to let go of his old life willingly without doubts, stede can't. he's still riddled with guilt and self doubt, and their relationship would never work if he didn't go back to his old life to find out he's not welcome anymore. he had to say a proper goodbye, leave a piece of his heart with his daughter. now he's truly ready to meet ed halfway.
Yes! Ed's overjoyed and Stede is ... not. Ed started the show ready to try being dead, but Stede's only ready to try it by ep 10. And then he kills his old life three times in five minutes lol. Great writing.

I know people are angry at Stede for leaving Ed to come back to his family, but imo, he needed to see them happier without him to realize that his own happiness lies with Ed now and that he's finally found true love with him.
I also think we got so much of Stede being a fun character, it was so important to see him royally fuck up and be honestly kinda awful. Being home again brought out the worst in him!

whenever i watch this clip i find myself mesmerized by rhys darby's acting. you can see stede slowly starting to panic so clearly. his eyes shift around, his breathing gets heavy, he starts giving ed short and nervous responses as things get more and more real. the kiss is beautiful but it was a lot for stede to handle-- so much was happening at the same time. rhys portrayed it all really, really well, in a way that's impressive if you pay attention but easy to miss, like how ed does
God, the pure LIGHT in Ed's eyes after the kiss goes well!
Um just SO HAPPY about how casual and clean the kiss is, just devoid of drama and exaggerated movements and “passion”. This is the most heartwarming demonstration of love I’ve ever seen because they know it’s reciprocated, they just needed to put together enough courage to admit it (particularly Ed)

After this, Ed comes up with a plan for them to escape in the middle of the night. However instead of meeting Ed at the dock as planned, Stede gets overwhelmed by guilt and goes home to his family, leaving Ed to escape on his own. During this separation, Stede confronts his guilt, makes amends with his family, and realizes his love for Ed. He conspires with his family to fake his death and then leaves to return to the ship on a small boat. While this is happening, Ed is on the ship depressed and heartbroken. After being provoked by Izzy, Ed decides to become Blackbeard again and throws Stede's crew out of the ship, officially taking over the Revenge.
The season ends with Stede reuniting with his stranded crew members. Blackbeard added a bleeding heart to his flag, and his last scene is of him crying to himself.
Omg i know! And I really wanted to enjoy this scene more but from start to finish I was just like "oh no oh no" BC it just has the vibes that things are gonna hit the fan and honestly that makes it perfect for a season 1 kiss bc they're not giving us a fully feel good moment where we can relax with these two but they gave us the kiss that proves that the characters both want that. I think they knew that they would have to give us a kiss bc of all the shit the community has been through but man does it kill me that stede wasn't even ready for it, didn't even know he loved the man yet!

Ed comes up with a really loose plan to sail to China, just the two of them, and Stede gives this response.. then Stede is woken in the middle of the night by Chauncey Badminton (the twin with short hair) who is drunk and lays into him about Nigel's death and basically calls Stede a monster and says he ruins everyone he gets his hands on and Stede says "I think you're right.. In fact, I completely agree" and then Chauncey, as he's about to murder Stede, trips and shoots himself through the same eye that Nigel's sword went through. Stede panics a whole bunch, and he's left in the wild just screaming and in distress. The story cuts over to Ed left waiting at the docks.. to him Stede's just decided to bail because he didn't mean it or something. He waits until sunrise then sails off on his own and it's obvious his heart's been broken. The episode ends with Stede returning to his home where his wife and kids are.
It would've been soooooeasy for them to keep these two at a jokey "oh they're just like a married couple! But STRAIGHT!" Like they did in the We Gull Way Back Episode. Oh haha they act like a married couple and they "broke up" but you would be silly to read anything deeper into that! But for them to have this completely real, tender confirmation of what would be an obvious conclusion to their relationship if they were straight was just so breathtaking. Like, hopefully in years to come this will just be basic representation but right now it feels like vindication.

Exactly !! I honestly didn't know this series was a romantic comedy because the friend that recommended it didn't tell me (she wanted it to be a surprise). I noticed the subtle hints of romance and the episode of they separating was the typical "we are acting like a DIVORCED COUPLE but it's funny cause we are STRAIGHT" but then they kissed for real and it was so natural and I couldn't believe it 😭😭 the queerbaiting industry really has messed me up.

If I were to be honest, this is a series where I had to reprogram my Christian upbringing. Every romantic relationship in the first ten episodes is LGBTQ+ related which I was not expecting coming into the show. I had a ton of belly laughs and if I am honest, more than enough moments where I had to question how open minded I truly am. I felt quite uncomfortable, especially with the non-binary relationship in this show. It's strange feeling seeing this kind of representation so prominent in a Hollywood production and It is certainly the first time I've seen someone referred to as the they/them pronouns. This show for sure helped a man in rural Australia with a religious upbringing better understand non-straight folk and I can honestly say I am excited for future episodes. As silly as it sounds, I came away from this show with a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ community.

This is honestly the best gay relationship I’ve ever seen in any media. It perfectly captures growing up gay, being gay, coming to terms with your identity and trying to accept yourself. It just has everything. Commentary on every important aspect of being LGBT+ tied in with comedy and romance. I’m in love with these gay pirates
Me too!! And I love that the fact they’re gay isn’t the conflict. Showing homophobia on screen is very important, but I just wish I could watch a queer movie/show without having to see them being beaten up or bullied purely just for being queer. Why do we have to be hated to be interesting? You can have a GREAT gay love story without including homophobia, and this show is proof.

Plenty of comedies sneak in really sweet romances, Ted Lasso and Parks and Recreation come to mind - unfortunately none of them have been queer relationships. This show does that really well. The best so far, tbh.

I loved the use of Satie's Gnoissienes #5 (a long-time favourite) as the romantic leitmotif throughout the series, and there it is again, at 1:27, when Ed says that it's Stede that makes him happy.

It actually starts out with Schumann’s Träumerei but after the first line it switches to Satie’s Gnossiennes. I didn’t know it was Satie, I thought it was the shows take on Schumann, that’s so clever! Both songs have almost the same beginning and sound so good together. (It also sounds like they are both originally in the same key) My music major mind is blown (and very happy)
@@zoestarbuck9892 Fellow music major here, I also caught that it starts with the Träumerei and I thought it was so beautiful because the name literally transaltes to "dreaming" and I think it adds sweetness to the scene with Ed and Stede's childlike innocence in love, given that the piece(the loveliest of the cycle and my favorite) belongs to the Kinderszenen. I don't know it that's what they were going with, but I choose to believe it.
Edit: there's also another "dreaming" piece used for the soundtrack, Debussy's Reviere when Mary is explaining what it's like to be in love. I love this show so much!!

I’m not gay, but I like how they did this scene. It wasn’t the “token queer couple” approach that always shows up when a show’s ratings are steadily dropping.
They took their time with it, and I was very fond of their budding friendship. And while I suspected this might happen, I can easily say that “if they kept it at just them being great friends, I would’ve been good with that, and if they push the relationship, I can ship it.”
It was a sweet, tender moment, and I hope they don’t ruin it in Season 2.
That's exactly what I thought, it wasn't forced, it didn't feel the show wanted to show and enphasize they are a gay couple, so for that reason it was genuine and soooo romantic for everybody.

Hannibal doesn't really count because Bryan didn't want their love to be expressed physically and it was supposed to be more emotional or something. He kind of regrets it though because the show ended up getting cancelled and stuff.
I don’t know if anyone’s already pointed this out but I went crazy trying to find out that the song in this scene is Erik Satie's Gnossienne no.5, which you can hear play during various scenes in other episodes relating to Ed and Stede’s relationship.

I love the fact that before, Ed told Stede that there was no escape, that they were trapped there, but once he realized that Stede felt the same way about him as he did about Stede, he no longer believed they were trapped. Stede showing that he loved him too made him realize he would do anything to be with him, even if it meant doing the stupidest, most dangerous thing they could possibly do.
honestly, I think Ed was happy to be there. It wasn't the ideal situation, but he was with Stede, which is why he was able to adapt so quickly and reacted angrily to Stede's request to escape. He felt that Stede was focused on the life he had left behind. Seeing that Stede was also attracted to him, Ed no longer cared about running away, because running away at that moment did not imply a separation.
When I watched this scene for the first time I felt like I'd unlocked a part of myself. I think my whole life I'd been aware of queerbaiting but it wasn't until I watched this scene between these two men who look and act and fall in love so differently from any other gay couple I'd seen on screen, and felt for maybe the first time in my life the same emotions I feel from a depiction of a straight romance, that I really understood what was missing from everything else I was watching. I can't believe I went into this silly little show about pirates and came out feeling like I just watched something revolutionary
This made me so happy I’ve never had a teased gay relationship actually happen especially in a comedic series like this. I watched enough 2010s comedy to not get my hopes up but finally it’s real. My teen self feels heard and my bisexual adult self is happy to see this progress.

It's so bittersweet seeing all our reactions to this, like it's so heartwarming seeing everyone crying over them and being so happy we actually got this in canon.... but the surprise and like strangeness of not being queerbaited for once is just sad.
Time and time again shows come so close to canon queer rep and then throw it all away, rush it at the end or just check off the lgbtq+ rep box with side characters.
But this time it was different.
It's so hard to express in words how impactful this is, how important showing relationships like this on screen is. The fact that everyone (myself included) is still struggling to wrap our heads around the fact that this ship is ACTUALLY CANON just reminds me of all the times we have been cheated out of representation in the past.
I hope this show can set a precedent for other series to follow in future. This in my opinion is the very best queer representation I have ever seen on screen, including the non-binary rep too. Just so well handled I cry every time I think about it.
In conclusion, give us season 2 right now, and it better have a happy ending or I will simply not recover

This might very well be one of the first scenes on TV where no matter how many times I play it, every time it apparently seems like I've never seen it before because I just feel the urge to bury my face into a pillow and scream since I'm hardly convinced that YES, THIS IS REAL.
Also, Stede's puppy expression at 1:12 is absolutely adorable. He truly is a golden retriever.

I can't even express how much of a relief it is to be reading all these comments. I finished the show a few nights ago, and it took me two hours to fall asleep because my mind was racing. I just didn't know what to do with myself. I still don't, and I'm feeling so many emotions it physically hurts. As a queer person still trying to figure things out, I didn't realize how much I was waiting for something like this to happen on TV, until it did, and part of me still can't believe it's real. Is this what representation is? I was legit wondering if this show broke my brain until I read everyone else's comments and saw that a lot of us are reacting this way. This show has wrecked me, lol
I'm going through the exact same thing, I feel like I cant do anything else BUT think about this show and how much the ending hurt!! writing this right now at 3 am with no chance of falling back asleep because of this lmao. I genuinely hope this show gets a season 2, and more importantly that these two eventually make amends and start all over :')

God I was so excited when I realized they were canon, I spent the whole time just going “yeah but that could be friendly stuff, there’s already 2 lgbt couples, there’s no way they’ll make the main dudes gay” and then they did?!?! Anyway this show is amazing and this scene is beautiful
I hope people see now how BIG and how VAST the support for this show is, BECAUSE it is supporting queer folks. For decades it was always assumed lgbtq characters would make media less popular, or looked down upon. And many people still shun content featuring "the gays". But the support and love for this show has been so fucking severe, I hope it got the message across.
To be fair, this was done tastefully as opposed to gratuitously, which a lot of "representation" has missed the mark on. I can see a lot of people being grossed out by gratuitous depictions of intimacy regardless of whether it's straight or gay or queer relations being portrayed.
But they didn't do that here. They didn't make it about sex. They made it about love.
We have always existed and we are not side characters in our own lives! You will never silence us!
I think maybe my favorite (or ok, second favorite) thing about this completely glorious scene is how they've both been stripped of all their protective armor (finery, leather, weapons, facial hair) and are in these neutral colors against a neutral (but gauzy-pretty) background. It's just them, with each other, in a little capsule outside of everything. Which they also were while flat on the deck of the Revenge while chaos churned around them in Ep 8. So many lovely little details in this dang show.
I have watched this scene an unhealthy number of times.
It was sad how they end separated,but stede really needed an emotional closure whit his family,to know they were gonna be okey whiout him,only in that way he could trully be happy and free to love somebody else whitout feeling guilty🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

I just noticed this, and it's really not that important but now I love it and I can't unsee it. The first 4 little face reactions after ed says "...you" are right on time with the music. Like it goes "...you..." Then Ed's eye blink/beat/Ed's head turn/beat/Stede's eyebrows/beat/Stede smiles/beat. It's so small but I want to believe it's not a coincidence and someone really took the time to plan this.

One of my many many favorite things about this scene is the music. There’s no great swelling of strings as they kiss, just some quaint and gentle piano as if then kissing is the simplest thing in the world. Cause it is.

To me, this scene has nothing to do with being gay or being queer or any other label.
This is love, and you don't get to pick who you fall in love with. I've found that sex and love are two very different things. I could fall in love with someone and not ever want it to be sexual, and I could want to have sex with someone and not have love have anything to do with it.
It's a great series and this scene had me leaking because it is so tender. Two humans found a spark. That's beautiful.
