At first I didn't get this, she sounds so leisure and not "operatic". Then one day it sudden dawn on me that this is just how singing should be, natural and pure. And I love how laid back she sounds, like she does not need to prove anything or show off any excessive technic.

Exactly! The deep, artificially darkened, stiff, unresonant "operatic" voices we are used to are an invention of the second half of the XXth century.

Adelina Patti was born in 1843, so at the time of this recording in 1906, she was about 63 years old. Unfortunately, there are no recordings of her singing in her prime. Given the age of the recording and of the singer, we are only hearing a "ghost" of what it must have been like to hear her singing live in her prime. Still, we should be grateful to have these reminders of her great talent.

Thank you for recognizing that, I try to tell anyone that harshly judges Madame Patti, to imagine Callas at 63 years old recording into a tin horn, onto a wax cylinder… Needless to say, we would have only heard stories of how great Callas was, & only have had the old recordings of her. Not only that, but 63 in Patti’s day was quite old… people didn’t live that long then, without modern medicine and medical knowledge I would compare it more to today’s 83 year olds. How I wish we could hear Patti at Covent Garden in the 1880-1881 season ❤️

And this is what she sounded like at age 63, in retirement, with nearly half a century of professional singing behind her! A long, effortless legato, a perfect trill, a warm steady tone, and a sincerely delivered interpretation. How fortunate we are that she chose to take a chance and experiment with this primitive recording device and leave us these priceless relics of her declining powers. Quelle voix! Quel artiste! Maintenant nous savons pourquoi elle était Patti.

She was very old, and far from her prime here, and recorded on primitive equipment. She caused such a sensation in her heyday (she's even mentioned in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" when one character says "Tonight's a Patti night at the opera." But the most mind-boggling thing about this is the fact that we are listening to a singer that Rossini himself listened to. It seems she auditioned for him when she was a teenager (she didn't get the job because he didn't care for her embellishments). But talk about a real piece of history!

All recordings by Patti carry object lessons in musicality and technique. Her "Ah non credea" is a miracle of delicacy and grasp of the message within Bellini's pages. The trills therein never cease to be amazing. Can one choose it as one's favorite Patti record? The "Casta Dova" reveals so much of an age gone by that one is spellbound with each hearing. Would that the overtones of her voice have been captured. I appreciate the care with which you have presented the photographic images chosen for your posts.

Mimi's 'Bada' in Donde lieta uscì is only two notes, yet so vivid and alive was Melba's singing of it that Walter Legge had Schwarzkopf study just that one word from Melba's Mimi and try to emulate the vocal miracle. And Gerald Moore relates that Elena Gerhardt could sing just one note, C#5, a cappella, and indicate merely by her tone coloring whether it belonged to the major or the minor mode. Great artists do not require a plethora of notes in order to make their effects.

Only one singer followed Patti's way and added those trills to the line. Should I mention its name?!

Vini Soaris Yes, please do. But, I do assume you are talking about the beautiful trills of Dame Joan Sutherland ?

@@Zack216216 Yep! Joan Sutherland. She admired very much these ladies and incorporated a lot of their ornaments in her singing.

her trill by the way is a gift from God and she divined it thusly. Such a thing cannot be taught and she had it till the end of her days. As with Mozart who was told by Papa Haydn "i have nothing more to teach you" after only a few lessons and Jesus was told by the Priests the same thing at the age of 12 there have been and are true geniuses in this world think of Stevie Wonder in the pop field--created and inspired by God and somehow they have been able to appropriate more of His Power than you or I..dont forget that John 3:16 are NOT the words of Jesus. He actually said "We are ALL sons of God and greater things than I do so can you if you believe" John 3:16 is only used by the church to keep its members under their thumb.
