    Criminalizing homelessness is not a solution. The solution is providing affordable housing. Giving people fines & felonies for being homeless is ridiculous.

      @@THopkins7 I have empathy for the homeless and have helped them before by buying them a meal or doing other things for them. But I personally think so many are drug users and once they get on that downward spiral it’s almost impossible for them to reverse their course and turn their life around.

    • @THopkins7
      @THopkins7 Před 22 dny

      @bradhampton6457 Yes. I can see that if they are on drugs. The drugs are apparently so strong these days, but we can't just leave them lying in gutters. There has to be outreach to get them off the drugs & make them productive again. I believe it will take more than a 30 day drug program though.

    If a person lives like this, like an essentially feral being for any length of time, it would be exceptionally rare for them to be able to ever return to a, "normal" or, "functional" lifestyle. Surviving out there changes a person in a lot of bad ways, many of which are long-lasting, even permanent.

    I live in a small town. We have approximately 60-100 homeless at a time. Most have tents. I tried to help one couple by getting them a job and putting them up in an inn that rented by the week. As soon as they had made enough to pay their own rent, did they? Nope they gave some money away then they slowly started laying out of work and lost their jobs. I think there are some that can’t deal with everyday life and that’s why they’re there. Then they get hooked on substances. It’s really sad.

    Born in Bradenton 1960. Family has been here since 1870. That whole area you were driving from downtown south along business 41 is where I spent much of my childhood. We could walk those streets day or night in the late 60's and 1970's without fear. In the 1920's my dad was born in a house a half a block from the Salvation Army building you passed. All of those homes in the neighborhoods east and west of 41 were occupied by retired grandmas and grandpas from up north, along with the natives. I used to deliver newspapers to them. They were so nice. When that generation died off, investors bought the houses and turned them into rentals. That whole area went to hell in the 1980's with the crack cocaine epidemic and has never recovered. That's when the hookers started showing up along 41, day and night. I left Bradenton in 2002 and moved to St Pete for 20 years. Now I'm back and it is so much worse than when I left. I won't even drive through the neighborhoods I used to live in in the 80's. Some of the commenters are right though, it's not just Bradenton. It's happening all over.

I moved from Orlando to Bradenton for work. You have some homeless in Orlando, Tampa but they are big cities, but Bradenton I was not expecting it then. So I can imagine it now. You also have to think that Florida is now the third most populated state in the United States and 80% of the people live south of Orlando. There is 28 million people living in Florida. So we will get a lot of homeless, especially how the economy is now and how expensive. It is to live here. Keep up the good work bother and stay safe out there.

I was actually impressed that the streets in Bradenton don't look bad at all compared to many, many other cities of the same population all over the U.S. I live in St. Petersburg, which is just a half hour drive across the Skyway Bridge. The population counts in FL are all screwed up because really there's a third of the population who officially don't live here but spend almost half their time here. Secondly Bradenton is very economically troubled because Florida is where the only jobs are medical or serving the desires of visitors both tourist and the aforementioned seasonal residents. Combine that with housing costs doubling in about a week and suddenly the people who are working are split into two groups: you work for the hospital or Tropicana and you might be able to afford housing or you do any other kind of job and you're homeless or barely hanging on to a bedroom with a kitchen and bath shared by six other people renting rooms in the same house. Meanwhile, half the houses sit there with no one even home for months on end. Meanwhile law enforcement ignores traffic violations so everyone drives all crazy. I just try to stay away from Bradenton as much as possible.

      DONT get homeless in ARCADIA. Take hwy 70 from arcadia to interstate 75. Sleep in the woods near there. you can kinda panhandle around here. not too dangerous. stay the crap outta bradenton city limits its a CRAPHOLE. north of Downtown off central is a huge open air camp its also drug ridden but its a place people sleep outside. lots of wooded areas with homeless in North port off toledo blade. stay away from homeless most of them are on drugs.. anything you go to sleep with stash it because they rob you at night. DONT stay in arcadia homeless. rents in lakeland are cheap but DONT be homeless in polk county you will starve to death. I would say, east bradenton. Close to lakewood ranch, but dont get caught vagrant in LWR they will arrest you, you gotta be west of 75. come towards the coast. There are apartments in SEBRING for $700-900 a month if you can find a room mate and split it. do what you can to stay off the streets because no way out trap out there.

Bradenton is only around a 1/5 of the size of North Port in square miles. Think of it more as a city center than a more rural area like North Port. You’ll typically have more problems in a city or downtown area than you will in the suburbs or outlying areas. Imagine North Port with a population over 285,000 people.
