Apple Watch SE (2022) - Don't Be Fooled!

- Apple just released the brand new Apple Watch SE which is a departure from the last Apple Watch SE because it now has the same performance as the flagship Series 8 Watch with its S8 processor. It also gets a new car crash detect features, and a bunch of software improvements in watchOS 9 including a low power mode for 38 hours of battery life, and a redesigned compass app. However, is this watch really worth it with its older design compared to the Series 8, and will you miss out by not having the latest health sensors?

What is better for the same price? Apple watch 1. gen 44 mm and cellular or se 2. gen 40 mm wihtout cellular
If you already have a better Apple Watch (I don't use Apple products), why use the SE 2?
Got the original SE last September and it was pretty good for the price, didn't see the extra value in paying more for a series 7, and it's still really snappy in day to day use. Charging is a little slow but it makes up for it with its excellent battery life
I got mine when the Series 6 released… Still running strong and not gonna replace it this year…
How long does it last?
@@blankets1453 I easily get a full day out of it, could probably get two days but I usually charge it when I'm sleeping
Right! I got myself the S7 just because I am a more technical and active person so I do use and take advantage of everything. But I recently got my dad a watch so we can keep each other accountable for activity and my dad loves the SE. I didn't think it wouldn't be liked but with the person my dad is, price doesn't matter but the experience will either make or break it and the SE hits everything an apple watch needs and more.
Excellent 18hours battery life 🤡
Didn’t care of all the extra features so I went and grabbed the se2 in midnight. This should last for me awhile especially that it has the s8 chip. This was a no brainer for me
What did you upgrade from?
The s8 chip is actually the chip from Series 6 lol
@@bigsur370 says who? Where did you see that?
@@emilsecker7881 did you not watch the video? He legit said that LMAO
@@emilsecker7881 It is indeed the same CPU and memory! They have other stuff integrated in the chip that probably has changed over the years but the core is the same.
Great review and comparison between the two watches. You’re 100% right when you said you sort of do need to compare the two. As someone who has never owned a smart watch, the 2022 SE made the most sense for me. Also, thanks for the laugh with the shining reference.
Bought the original SE in 2020. N it holds up well to this day. I’m a big fan of the always on display. I might not upgrade to another SE unless they add that feature.
My 6 still does everything I need but loved this video as some of my sons are wanting watching and this new SE is really perfect for them!
Series 6 in good shape with a good battery is probably the best bet vs. the newer watches. Series 5 is a bargain on the used market, but I find the Series 6 runs more efficiently and the battery lasts longer in my experience. I have had multiple series 5 and series 6 watches and have found every series 6 to have better battery life than every series 5, the way I use the watches.
Thank you for this cool and in-depth review! I think imma be getting this SE 2 around the holidays!
Got my sun glow band yesterday, it’s absolutely gorgeous!
I decided to buy the SE2 because in Europe it was the best investment (Series 7 wasn’t discounted much) and I love it A LOT! It’s super fast, I compared it with the Series 7 and 8 and the extra 2 sensors (O2 and temperature) and always on display weren’t worth double the price (299 euros for the SE2 vs 399 for the Series 7 vs 499 for the Series 8). If you haven’t tried an Apple Watch, I think you might love it, I initially bought it to use it for fitness tracking and I have found countless opportunities where I use it on the daily. Hope my experience helps some of you!
Can you reply with personalized text in SE2?
Thanks
Yes Admir
@@LitRandomness thank you. I bought one SE 2 ( GPS +Celular) for 379 Euro ata Amazon , but send it back after 4 days. Battery drained very fast.
O2 sensor, temp sensor, ekg data is just gimmicky and you are on point. It is not worth buying the series 8 at 2x price. In india series 8 is 3.5x times of se2
I was in the market for an SE2 or Series 8 after finally upgrading from my Series 1 (which is still on watchos6…). I ended up really liking the more premium design of the Apple Watch Series 8 and although the SE2 was enough of an upgrade for me, I feel like I’d always stay wanting more so I ended up buying a preowned Series 7 in starlight in really good condition and 98% battery health for £220! It was an absolute steal and I’d seriously recommend trying to find a really well priced Series 7. I saw it averagely between £240-£290.
Coming from a series 4 I upgraded to the 8. After upgrading the always on display has been something I wouldn’t get rid of easily. Oh, and the battery life too. But there aren’t many differences between the SE and 8 and for me it’s the always on display, bigger screen and the keyboard.
love your honest review on this new Apple SE2. does the low power mode applies to the phased out iWatch7 on Watchos9?
I actually went for a discounted series 7 because it had more features than the SE 2 and wasn’t missing a lot of features from the series 8 since I already had an iPhone 14 and therefore had the crash detection anyways.
I still have my SE and I wear it daily, even with the new updates it really is fast and smooth enough that I don't really see a need to upgrade to the SE2. I was seriously hoping that the SE2 would end up having the smaller bezels that the S7 and now S8 have, but it didn't. Honestly I would say if you're looking for a first time apple watch you could snag the first SE for an even greater discount. It still works perfectly fine and the speed is really not something most people are going to notice.
UPDATE: I ended up trading in my SE on the Apple Store to buy an S8. If you have your watch on you all the time, the upgrade is worth it. Noticeably less laggy, charges significantly faster, and the battery lasts longer too. And the flashlight seems to get brighter than before. The bigger screen is also a plus, although I haven’t noticed it as much As I was hoping I would on the watch faces mainly. But the keyboard is actually great and the swipe to type gestures work surprisingly well.
Still using original apple watch se, it’s still running perfectly
Sold! I just purchased one as a Christmas present (for myself 😀). Thanks for the video!
I still have the first se Apple Watch worth the upgrade or wait for se 3 ? Also what exactly do you get with cellular version? You can text without your phone being near you.?
Couldn’t imagine not having the always on display, ever since I got a series 5. It truly makes the Apple Watch a watch. I find turning off raise to wake and most notifications other than calls, texts and certain apps, and keeping the always on display on gets me better battery life than turning off the AOD but keeping raise to wake on.
I’m not much a fan of the always on display, but that’s just because I’m weird. If it were like the same brightness as it being on while retaining battery life all the same, then I would like it, but I know that isn’t ideal whatsoever right now.
@@user-sf9gs2pg1b I totally get what you’re saying - at least in certain settings the AOD can be too dark to really see or look like it’s really on - they improved it with the series 6 and its brighter screen.
@@potownrob i guess that would make the se more expensive 😂
@@rochitgurung9090 you mean putting an AOD on the SE would make it more expensive? Well, yeah. It would also canibalize sales of the regular model.
My original Watch SE still functions perfectly so I’m going to hang onto it. It does what I need it to do. I was looking at the SE2 but will pass on it for now.
Well I decided to go ahead and upgrade to the new Watch SE2 (for myself) after getting a new Watch SE2 for a family member as a gift.
I got the se 2 watch. Works great. Battery lasts all day/night. I charge it in the morning to 100% when I’m in the shower, and it only goes down to 70ish every 24hrs
I'm actually glad the SE exists, as it lets people on low incomes test the waters without spending an entire month's disability check on the higher end watches. Even with my vision, (low vision), I'm able to use the SE's accessibility features to access this watch. I have a heart condition, and wish the SE had the ECG capability of the higher end watches, but it at least has the ability to let me know if there's a problem. At my age, the fall detection feature is a must have. Thanks for sharing.
@@IsaacMazur Get critically ill, blind, and disabled, and loose your freaking job, and you'll find out,
I was considering getting the 2nd gen Apple Watch, since it started at 249, but I saw Walmart selling the 45mm in green for 300, so I jumped for that one.
Thanks for your review I sitting on the fence of buying my first Apple Watch. SE is a good first pick for me😁
I have the Apple Watch Series 7 Nike edition, and I love all of the features that it has. I was excited to see what the series 8 was going to bring to the table, and have to admit that I was completely underwhelmed. Temperature tracking for ovulation does absolutely nothing for me, since I am a man. Now, if the temperature sensor was able to give you a read out on the spot to let you know if you are sick or something, that would be a game changer. And then the added crash detection, it’s just not enough new features to warrant an upgrade. Now, if we later find out that the temperature sensor CAN work in that fashion, perhaps I’ll consider it.
You have a series 7. Of course you would be disappointed 😂
I think future’s update will enable it
The temperature sensor can tell when you are sick. I own one and I’ve seen many posts on reddit when the S8 or Ultra detected their sickness.
great video!
disclaimer: the first-gen Apple Watch SE models sold from Sept 2021-Sept 2022 came bundled with the charging cable with USB-C on one end.
i just got this for my birthday after never owning an apple watch, or a watch in general ! i really love it so far. as a person that's just getting into fitness and working out, i'm really loving how it motivates me to get up a moving. sure, a fitbit would do the same, but this is really nice !!!
Hi, great video, thanks. The original SE has S5 processor introduced with series 5. Take care!
Thank you for the video. I’m upgrading from the 3 and am torn between the SE and SE2. Pros for SE: USB-A charger, Price, And it appears as though the back is the same as the S3 that I know my skin isn’t irritated by. Pros for SE2: Chip, Crash Detection and the price isn’t much more than the SE. I have to decide by Monday. 😅
Are these a viable option without an I phone. I do have an I pad though.
I just upgraded from the Apple Watch 3 to the SE. Loving it so far!
Got SE 2021 44mm & absolutely loved it. 🤗
I'm still rocking my Series3 from 2018. The only "problem" I have with it is that it won't do a software update without resetting & reinstalling it from scratch (always "insufficient memory"). But soon that won't be a problem, lol. Nothing I've seen so far is a compelling enough reason to spend hundreds and upgrade. (now, if they came out with a BG monitor, that _would_ be compelling, being diabetic and all...). So I'll just keep wearing my S3. It still tells the time, it still nags me to stand up every now and then. Timers work. it tells me if it's raining. Don't need a lot more!
couldn't agree more. I still have my Series 3 and it does everything I need it to. I could even stretch out the battery for 2 days, but I just toss it on the charger when I go to bed and never have battery anxiety. It's a fine watch.
my series 3 wouldn’t update or connect to my phone
I picked up the SE Gen 2 in Midnight and its perfect for what I need. Thanks for the review.
My stainless series 2 battery had finally started puffing up and popping the screen off so i upgraded to the SE2 in silver. I dont miss the durability/weight of the stainless at all and love how snappy and light it is.
The Apple Watch 8 is dope! But, after getting the SE, I’m super happy! The nylon back looks so good, it’s lighter than the 8, and noticeable. The screen size doesn’t bother me, it’s a fast watch, I got the cellular version, and I love leaving my iPhone behind while I go out with my friends, dinner with my wife, work, etc… it’s super nice for my mental health. The only feature I wish I had was a blood oxygen sensor. The SE is a perfect balance and value.
Getting a Fitbit for the fitness tracking
I have my Apple Watch SE since April 2022. I got it just after using a refurbished Apple Watch series 2 for almost 2 years. I did need an upgrade for this one app from my iPhone to used on the Apple Watch to start my vehicle up. I also have a series 1 Apple Watch, too. I have those 2 Apple Watches just in case something gone wrong with the SE. I still used the watch bands from my 2 older Apple watches which they are both 38mm. My Apple Watch SE is in space grey that I got at Target. I’m happy with it.
i have a applewatch ultra and its just too bulky and i am looking to get an se as well to use daily so i am a bit miffed on which one to get either the se or series 8 and this video helped alot!!
Thanks for video. It helped me to decide between the SE and the Series 8. Will spend a little more and get the Series 8.
is always display on working on watch 7 ?
Just bought series 7 midnight. Wowee this is a nice watch. The screen is gargantuan!
I really like my new se 2. It’s my first ever Apple Watch and I’m stoked to have one. I got it as an anniversary gift from my husband. It has a sleep app that I installed and I use the heart app. It’s cool.
I am a first time Apple watch wearer. I have the SE and am so excited about it. It was easy to set up and to use, I am enjoying it very much!
Totally helpful video. Thanks for sharing this review!
I'm going to get a series 8 because of bigger screen and always-on display. I'm upgrading from a series 3 which is still fully functional and even has 98% battery health - which totally amazes me because I've been using it for 5 years. I'd continue using it, but it starts annoying me with being slow sometimes.
It’s definitely an upgrade from S3 i traded from. Bigger screen
Thanks for another helpful video
Bought the Series 7 last year. But if I was in the market for my first smart watch right now or upgrading from a really old one, this is an absolute not brainer IMO.
Meaning what? You’d go with the SE (2)? Or the 8?
Never had an Apple Watch before but always used an iPhone. I just need it for quicker Apple pay, to tell the time, and to give me a few notifications, nothing fancy. Getting this new SE also because I want years of updates. $249 hard to beat.
What size is the one you are wearing?
Hey! How does the Apple Fitness app work? Is it enough to buy Apple Watch and pair it with your smartphone or do I need to pay for some premium subscription to get all the features (sleep cycles, zones, closing activity rings etc.)? Also- can you control Spotify on your wrist or it works for Apple Music only?
What I can find info about is whether the lack of always on display is making it irritating to use. I hate when I look at the watch and don't see the time...
Hey man, keep up the grind! This is an exceptional tech review video and you absolutely have potential to gain a ton more subscribers
Can you use backtrack where there is no data?
I'm good with my SE gen1. It does everything I need it to do. I'm keeping it until apple no longer sends updates for it.
I do the same 👍.
Exactly… bought my SE 3 weeks ago on sale… I am happy with it
Preordered the SE in 2020, never felt that it needed an upgrade. Have the iPhone 14 pro though.
Same
Greg I am going to buy my first Apple Watch. What do you think if I need to buy this as I wanted a affordable one
Thank you for this help such as no keyboard on this and no auto on feature not on here leads me not to get this!
This man always prevents us from being fooled LOL
Thanks for the info. I'm looking to buy my first apple watch and this was just the kind of rundown I needed!
so when are they making a round one
Does the SE model have the track registration function when running?
Keep up the great work Greg! 🙏🏻
Thank you 🙏
Good watch I hated the large display on the 7 and I just want the health tracking so se is for me
I've had my first time Apple watch SE for quite a few months now and I love it. The only thing is I keep forgetting to turn on "Outdoor Walk" before I leave to go walking. I had a Fitbit before this Apple and it measured my steps, however, I love that I upgraded to the Apple watch SE!!!
Still rockin' the SE from 2020 (or was it 2021?) since last August. I like the ceramic back better with the silver frame as it gives it this black and white vibe instead of mostly white. Plus, the new one doesn't have a bunch more features compared to the one I have, so upgrading is out of the question.
Definitely not worth the upgrade from the last SE, but a great watch for new apple watch owners.
@@GregsGadgets Agreed!
Ugh I wish they’d just call it the SE the SE2 and the new one the SE3
Just upgraded to the Series 7 a week before I post this reply. Much needed for practicality!
When basic doesn't mean less. Had it for over a year and it work as needed. Still looks great.
I got a series 6 a few months ago, its got the slightly bigger bezel buts its still a big upgrade from my old series 1, the red version looks awesome too
So if you have the original SE hold onto it basically??
Got the SE1 for sale like a few months before the SE2 was rumored to come out. Dont regret it tho.
hi, is it possible with GPS and cellular mode not to buy an eSim card to be able to receive your notifications without our iPhone nearby
thank you
I'm gonna buy this hoping to use at least 2 years
I bought the 1st gen Watch SE in March and it came with the USB C cable.
I bought the original SE, and I wasn't doing many workouts at all. However I ended up starting getting into the little bit of fitness features in the SE about 6 months in and when the Series 7 came out I traded up. Ever since I got my Apple Watch I've done on average 1.5 hours of working out (gym for an hour and then misc. workouts), so I'm really grateful that I'm really into data lol. I didn't bother getting the 8 because they used more or. less the same processor as the 6 and 7, and I liked the Ultra but not for $800, when I'm likely getting the 9. I feel like they'll have an "SE" version of the Ultra even though that seems contradictory lol.
I have the series 2 apple watch (that was given to me) i’m ready to upgrade 😂 any suggestions SE or 8.
I upgraded to the 8 from the 2020 SE. I’m looking forward to the larger screen and having full features. ☺️ giving my current watch to my sister.
sister : I really thank you
A lot of these features are on the original Apple Watch SE as well. Not much change
*me still with the series 3 while having the latest phone, laptop, and computer*
and honestly? the only reason i have to currently upgrade that i care about is the better sleep tracking, and always on display… but i already have a leather and metal bands for this one…. and it would be a haste to switch….. and it’s a lot of money for those 2 things….. i think im good honestly
I had a series 4 44mm for a year or so then left the apple ecosystem for a few years just came back and got this SE and it’s exactly what I want and need I don’t need all the fancy gadgets and features that I’ll never need
Coming from a long history of Mi Bands, the Watch SE 2022 feels like a freaking powerhouse. I'm beyond impressed. I honestly only regret not getting the cellular model. Aside from that, I'm extremely happy. I even like the raise-to-wake, it works every time, and that's how I used my Mi Bands for yeeears, also I kinda like the look of the display being turned off. For a first Apple Watch, coming from smart bands, it's a great choice.
I Use mi bands since the 4 , have a 7 now, and was considering the apple watch, but i doesn't work with android so unfortunately i'm staying where i am ;( any workaround on this?
Finally i found someone who also use mi bands and i really want to upgrade to apple watch as mi bands are not really upgrade both hardware and software. But I don’t know if it really worth it to change completely to apple watch. Can you give some advice on my problems, thank you so much
@@izzuddinazis9982 Went from Mi bands too, and the upgrade is insane, only thing is battery, but you quickly get into habits of charging it when you don't need to features, not really an issue. If you have an iPhone and wanna get a new watch or wearable the apple watch is the way to go.
Same here mi Bands 3,4,5,6,7. Now looking at the SE.
I'm upgrading from a Garmin watch with always on (but awful) transreflective display.
I look at it many times during the day at various angles, idk, to me it's crucial to have AOD to see the time at any moment without raising the hand
I just bought the se2 . Is a protective cover worth buying to limit the chance of cracking the screen? If so do have a suggestion as to which on to get? Thanks
I just bought a few cheap ones of Shein and they do the job
Any ideas on this dust resistance it’s supposedly lacking? I’m confused how a watch can be waterproof, but not dustproof
I suppose dust could gunk up the crown pretty bad and mess with those mechanics in a way that water wouldn’t. That’s pure guesswork though
I am curious about durability. It would be nice to get new features without having to spend a fortune on a new Apple Watch. Last year I got the Space Black Titanium Edition Series 7. I was gobsmacked when Apple discontinued it. After seeing the Ultra I understand why, but I’m not feeling that price point for a clunky Dick Tracy watch. So I’m gonna keep this one for a while. I just wanted the rainbow Modular face that’s shown in your thumbnail, and I have that now, so… Yaaaayyy!!!
What about the heart rate accuracy and burnt calories accuracy? Is it less accurate than the series 7 or 8?
I need those watch bands
Could someone summarize which generation of watch se is better? Look doesn’t matter
How does the 4G work? Do i need another eSIM only for the Navigation feature? Can't it Sync to the iPhone and use the mobile data from my phone? I'm really confused
Excellent review and video, thank you! Love the way you present the information too, subscribed. Best of luck!
My Gen 0 finally is coming to end of life with battery life (no longer gets full day). I believe Gen 0 was testimony to quality: battery lasted to today, I actively swam with it etc (technically isn’t waterproof). What a positive experience it has been!
The good thing about not getting new chips every year is older watches don't slowdown due to heavier OS.
Battery life?
I’m not an athlete, so I don’t really need much out of my watch. I am super excited for crash detection though, as I’m especially paranoid with my second one this past week (wasn’t driving in either), and don’t have the money for the new iPhone 14.
I’m a user of 1st Gen SE.
I was hoping for Aways On Display for the second gen SE. That’s all.
But nope, they didn’t give us that. 💔
Agreed! SE is all I need
using an AOD enabled Apple Watch for 3 years now i could never switch back, it’s too awesome for me.
Thanks Greg. That was very useful for my decision.
Don't really care for all the extra features, so probably looking into getting the SE2. Although, I would miss out on the always-on display and larger screen size.
Everyone’s different, but for me I found always on display not to be worth it, wasn’t a fan. The larger screen personally didn’t fit my wrist, but if you have wrists that can accommodate then I’d consider it. Though, if you have your phone on you and plan on using it alongside your phone (not by itself on cellular), then I don’t think a larger screen would matter much with your phone there.
@@user-sf9gs2pg1b AOd is worth it every penny
I am really happy with my Apple Watch SE 1st gen but a second gen model is definitely a good choice for does upgrading from series 3 or maybe even a series 4, and it could also work as a secondary Apple Watch for does who already have an Apple Watch. I indeed upgraded from an Apple Watch series 1 to an SE best choice I did in 2020.
So the nylon composite, so it’s possibly the glass reenforced by that nylon maybe, maybe there’s a small layer on top which will prevent scratches
After suffering with Afib for the first time and being told by my Series 6. I would always opt for a watch with ECG functionality
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!
