Did you know: Youngstown, OH is not only halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh but also halfway between Chicago and New York City?

Born and raised in Youngstown, grew up in Virginia. I left Y-town in 2007. It looks almost exactly the same 17 years later, except the abandoned lots have increased in number and YSU has expanded in to some low-rent areas...

I was born and grew up in nearby Salem, Ohio. We used to go to Youngstown quite often, especially for shopping, or to visit the Butler Museum of American Art. I had thought about even studying at YSU, but life took a different turn and I ended up moving abroad, where I still am today, 27 years later. Youngstown doesn't look like it has changed much at all.

4:44 That stretch of Wick Ave used to have several new car dealerships. Sadly, there hasn't been a new car dealership inside the city limits for at least two decades.
9:45 That's "Rayen Ave." I graduated from the former The Rayen (High) School.
15:09 I believe this is the 3rd time they've rebuilt this road. In the 60s-70s, they did the urban renewal thing and turned it into a pedestrian mall with one way driving. It killed the already declining business downtown. They opened it back up with diagonal street parking and now again with parallel parking. Fortunately, downtown had been seeing a resurgence--it used to be a ghost town after 5pm but there's nightlife with several bars, restaurants and a hotel.

23:18 The partially completed Hubbard Expressway (US-62/OH-7.) It was originally supposed to travel through the Eastside of the city and connect with I-80 just west of Hubbard, OH. It's highly unlikely it'll ever be completed.

My mother's side of the family is all from the greater Youngstown area. I grew up in WV but spent a lot of time in this area vising my relatives, by then we moved to GA when I was 12 and it was too far to drive on a regular basis. Now all of my relatives have moved to GA! The north side was once filled with mansions, but now Youngstown is one bad area. Used to be one of the largest producers of steel in the nation, and when that ended to city gradually fell apart.

Yup. It's been at an economic freefall ever since the steel mills left.

Born and raised in Youngstown. Left in 1969. The town I knew is gone. Sad how the old churches remain almost like tombstones.

It seems to me that Youngstown, OH, is like Orangeburg, SC. Only the college campus looks nice.

@@Markkos1992Yeah, Youngstown, OH has been in an economic freefall since the 70s and 80s when the Steel Mills left due to them not complying with the new (at the time) EPA Regulations.

I'm pretty sure the roads would be wider and there would be Block O's all over since The Ohio State Univ is a MUCH larger campus than Youngstown State Univ. Lol
