"It was cold and it rained, so I felt like an actor, and I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there..." That line always gets me. Absolutely a masterpiece.

Fact: the vocals were first take and according to the producer Bowie was emotionally drained with tears running down his face afterwards

The greatest love song hidden in a apocalypse tale

"The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" is my favorite Bowie album. This is the first song on it. The entire album is a masterpiece and one of the first "concept" albums. I highly recommend you listen to the entire album.

"Five Years" has been called one of Bowie's greatest songs by many music publications ... Bowie claimed to have chosen the length of time, five years, as a result of a dream in which his deceased father told him he must never fly again and would die in five years (early 70's was a period of his paranoia & drug use) ... would love a few reactions to his later music Randi if possible, would be interesting to hear your views

Not sure whether this will mean anything to you or not, but I had a dream a few nights ago that I have been unable to shake. I dreamed of all things a mother whale and then her baby whale came into my dream. I had never had a dream so vivid like this. I looked it up and one of the explanations was to dream of a mother whale is a sign of a powerful person wanting to keep their child from harm and the only thing I could say to that at this moment in time is that is so appropriate as I have a son who has mental issues along with drug and alcohol addiction. One thing I know for sure is that a mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child.

I love the concept of this song from the perspective of one persons reaction to the news you have five years to do what you need to do and how his brain is scrambled by the idea.

Bowie is believed to have had tears in his eyes at the end of this song whilst singing at the time of recording. now there's emotional content.

Well that knocked a fat old grumpy (62) for six. "stuck on my eyes" now hits home....Think may need a Pan Piano pick me up (don't ask) after that trip down memory lane...feel a loft raid on the box of cassette tapes may be incoming along with retro fitting a old "radio cassette" play from the shed in the car ?

No matter how this song gets woven into the Ziggy mythos, I believe your interpretation nailed it as far as the narrative about which Bowie had actually written.

  • @maryelizabethreynoldsprice2135

i know I will enjoy your future Bowie reactions. I had mentioned in another one of your Bowie reactions that you're a sophisticated listener. I really enjoy your reaction to this remarkably unique genius named David Jones .AKA David Bowie. Love on ya!

Yes, great emotion from Bowie....the lyrics are the sign of an artistic Bowie that eventually comes back (and to great fruition) in Diamond Dogs. Already, his writing is a bit deeper than the normal music artist and it only goes higher in the years that follow.

I first heard the song when it was covered by Brian Molko. I like a lot of Bowie songs, but I have to admit that I like Brian's acoustic version better. Maybe you would like to react this version too?

Very theatrical. Some of these lyrics are wrong :(
