Mac user for 25 years (or more)...never knew this... move files instead of copy... always thought why does apple not have command x? but this is really an insight... so simple but so important to save a lot space of data. Thanks.
You are the best. I bought a new iMac after 10 years on my old one and decided to learn a little more about it. Your toutorials are the greatest! Thank you, thank you.
Man, thank you so much for this! I'm thrilled to finally own a nice Mac for music production (vs pc), but as soon as I wanted to simply move file into a different location - in this case a few IR files for my guitar - I became frustrated pretty quickly. Your explanations here are clear and concise, and I really appreciate it! Subbed immediately 💯
Another Excellent video! I have been a casual Mac user for almost 30 years when I purchased a used Apple II CI. These are amazing tips that I never new about. Thanks so much for this video and all your other informative and enlightening videos. I have subscribed!
Yes, God bless you, indeed. Coming from Windows, I got so frustrated that I couldn't Cut and Paste a file from an old folder to a new one or that I couldn't right click and select "Move to Folder ..." Thank you for your help!
Great tips! I'm an ex Windows guy and have been missing the cut/paste feature for moving docs. You gave me the replacement in the Command-move function. I appreciate you!
Thanks so much! I was missing the MS Windows right-click "Send to" function for moving files to other folders. This is going to save me tons of time and mental torture. You're the best - again!
Sneaky how you saved the best tip for last :) I learned a lot from this video! I am a long time advanced Windows user and realized I should use a Mac part time to get fully up to speed with it.
Thank you for this! I've been a Windows user for ages and moved to Mac full time a year or so ago. Your vids have been paramount in helping make the transition!! I used the instructions you shared for Quick Action with Automator and it works awesome. How do I edit a quick action I've created?
I did not know about drag and dropping to the Back button Arrows. I’ve always loved the way one can drag and drop, with View set to List, selected files from all different levels or hierarchies of folders to another folder. I wonder if they’ve added that functionality to Windows’ folder views?
very interesting you had me looking in accessibility at other things, really dont go in there much out of sight out of mind, it is amazing how much you can do i wish i seen a lot of your videos back when you made them and learned over time vs learning so much recently
You have an excellent way of explaining. I might have read or heard these different techniques many times but now it seems I really incorporated them. Thanks and keep up with the good work!
Yeah, thanks much. I waited too long how to move files on a Mac (always knew on Windows). I use control and command key a lot but that option key had features unbeknownst to me.
Gary - another excellent tutorial. Thank you. I wonder though, if sometimes less isn't more? I mean, do we really need 10 ways to move a file? I suppose different options work well for different needs, but having to learn the 10 different ways just to find the one or two most useful to me can be a little overwhelming.
It is nice to have options. If apple removed a few of these, no doubt people would be up in arms if that was one they used. Just choose which method works best for you and you don't need to remember the others.
I always learn something new from all of Gary's videos. They are great. An additional way to move files, if you are comfortable with using the Terminal app, is to invoke the mv command: mv
Why does your finder window look so different than mine? Mine doesn't have any of these features. Definitely doesn't show the file path of how deep I am
Exellent! You are a great help. I am very new to the Apple app. Sometimes your mouse clicks and next step, are a bit too fast and is hard to keep up with. It would be better if when you are showing your "how to do" samples, if you were a bit slower so that we could keep up with your instruction. Thank you very much, for sharing your knowledge. It is greatly appreciated. 😊
Learned alot thank you! Question: Is there a way to add a folder to your right click menu to move items to? Like hover the pointer over an item, right click then select to folder you want to move items into? I have been trying to figure this out and found your video, again really learned from you much appreciated.
Informative..thank you. However, is it just my screen..? I had troubles following you when you were going to or pointing out anything on the tool bar…it was outside my screens line of sight. Probably just me, if not perhaps you could do a video on how I adjust my screen ..lol Thanks again.
Wery useful tutorial. Cann you make automation for copy files to USB drive as on windows when you right click and then select send to and then it opens new drives where you cann copy files?
Hi Gary, I'm a bit new to your channel, but I love it so far. Did this change with Big Sur? I have always been able to spring load my folders, but since I updated to Big Sur, it won't do it. I double checked my Pointer control, but still not luck. Awesome tips in the video. Thanks!
You can't. This tells you that the caps lock is on. What's the situation where it becomes annoying. How are you using your caps lock key (I never, ever, use it, personally).
Thanks for stepping in and saving the glaring usability problems of MacOS. You have to hold option key to see a move option? Really. There's absolutely NO hint of that anywhere in the interface. And all of the other ways to move filed involver dragging? Really. What happened to right click -> move to option. Would be much faster than performing all those drag dexterity exercises. This is only one of many usability problems this Linux and Windows user had been inflicted on by MacOS. Gotta give their marketing team credit. They managed to convince a considerable number of people that the least intuitive and usable OS is actually the opposite.
By default dragging will move files on the same drive, and copy files to another drive. Holding Option gives you the opposite "option" to that. You can use the keyboard to move files too (Command+C, etc). Watch the whole video.
Select file, click with 2 fingers and select "copy". Navigate to new folder, click on it with 2 fingers to get context-menu. Keep the menu open and press "option"-key, then select "move item here".
Bless your soul, young man. You revealed how to move files without dragging! I cannot thank you enough for ending my frustration!!!
I agree!
Me too. I had trouble dragging and dropping on my MacBook Pro.
Mac user for 25 years (or more)...never knew this... move files instead of copy... always thought why does apple not have command x?
but this is really an insight... so simple but so important to save a lot space of data. Thanks.
I've been on Mac for years and didn't know most of these. This should be a mandatory video for new Mac users.
I can't tell you how incredibly helpful this was! It will make my life much easier. Thank you!!
You are the best. I bought a new iMac after 10 years on my old one and decided to learn a little more about it. Your toutorials are the greatest! Thank you, thank you.

I ALWAYS learn something with you, Gary!
Yes, God bless you, indeed. Coming from Windows, I got so frustrated that I couldn't Cut and Paste a file from an old folder to a new one or that I couldn't right click and select "Move to Folder ..."
Thank you for your help!
I have terabytes of photos from over the years that I want to move at the click of a button and you showed me the way with the automator. Thank you
Great tips! I'm an ex Windows guy and have been missing the cut/paste feature for moving docs. You gave me the replacement in the Command-move function. I appreciate you!
Returning to Mac after a decade away and this was precisely the reminder I needed.
Thanks so much! I was missing the MS Windows right-click "Send to" function for moving files to other folders. This is going to save me tons of time and mental torture. You're the best - again!
You really know this system - THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm new to mac and the journey to explore mac world is quite challenging.
Thank you very much, your first suggestion is what I needed
Sneaky how you saved the best tip for last :) I learned a lot from this video! I am a long time advanced Windows user and realized I should use a Mac part time to get fully up to speed with it.
Spring loading, who knew. Great stuff. Thanks
Thank you so much! The last step was the one I was looking for! Command C and then Option Command V
Thank you for this! I've been a Windows user for ages and moved to Mac full time a year or so ago. Your vids have been paramount in helping make the transition!! I used the instructions you shared for Quick Action with Automator and it works awesome. How do I edit a quick action I've created?
In Automator, go to File, Open Recent. If you don't see it there, then search for it in the Finder or look in ~/Library/Services
Exactly what i needed!
Really helpful tip. Thank you
This was amazing! Thank you!
8:25 THANK YOU !!!! saved my life !

Awesome video. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks so much !!! I was tearing my hair out trying to figure this out and you made it super simple.
Great summary of the topic! Thank you!

Dude you are full of Mac knowledge. Amazing and very very useful videos. Keep up the good work
Great info. A little quick for me so I will probably watch a couple of times. Thank you.
You have an excellent way of explaining. I might have read or heard these different techniques many times but now it seems I really incorporated them. Thanks and keep up with the good work!
This guy really knows what is doing. His instructions are great and simple. Thank you!!!
Glad to help
Can you just sit next to me in my office and help me clean things up!? Lol. You are a wealth of brilliant info! Thanks!
Saved my bacon. Thanks, er, Mac.
Thanks man, you seem to be a mac expert :)
Great information!
You are amazing, thank you for your time and expertise in helping so many people!
The more I see it, the more I love cut paste from windows
You are doing great job. Apple should pay you for doing this. You are excelent trainer.
Thanks.
Brilliant! thank you so much for this, many things I was struggling with all these years
excellent. Thank you...
Yeah, thanks much. I waited too long how to move files on a Mac (always knew on Windows). I use control and command key a lot but that option key had features unbeknownst to me.
I was wondering how to cut and paste files! Super useful!
Finally understand how to move files so I can stop complaining it is different than Windows...turns out it's better!
Thank you so much. This is EXACTLY what I needed to know.
many thanks!
Wow, bless your soul.
That was so helpful! Thank you! My 100+ files are moved.
THANK YOU

Excellent video. Thank you.
This information is solid gold! Thank you so much!!
The best video ever on youtube you just saved me from getting fail right now cant explain the whole situation but really thanks dude..😁
Why does your finder window look so different than mine? Mine doesn't have any of these features. Definitely doesn't show the file path of how deep I am
Thanks
2:37 no need to wait for the "example" folder to open to release the file. can be dropped to the tab top label. ;)
thank you sir.
Thanks man.
OMG! Thank you! It’s so hard to find good information on mac file organization. It’s Illuminati level knowledge. ;-). Subscribed.
Exellent! You are a great help.

Maybe slow down the video. I actually pause it and digest then press play again! Way too fast for me too. But such a valuable video!
excellent Gary, as always. very helpful.

Great video. Can you tell me why when I drag and drop it copies when I want it to move?
Thank you so helpful. You are a genius
Perfect , you have just saved me so much time
Awesome...Thanks
Why did I not know this stuff! Fantastic.
Informative..thank you. However, is it just my screen..? I had troubles following you when you were going to or pointing out anything on the tool bar…it was outside my screens line of sight. Probably just me, if not perhaps you could do a video on how I adjust my screen ..lol
Thanks again.
Perhaps you scrolled your browser window so the video was partially hidden? You can always use CZcams's full screen button too.
Thank you!!!!! You helped a lot!!!

Spring loading hasn't changed. Perhaps check your settings for it?
dude your videos are so informative and useful
hi.
how do i keep my folders in one desktop i don't want it to appear on the other desktops i have ?
Love this. Can you tell me how to get rid of the annoying red/pink symbol that pops up when my caps lock is on (MacBook Pro)
You can't. This tells you that the caps lock is on. What's the situation where it becomes annoying. How are you using your caps lock key (I never, ever, use it, personally).

Thank You. If I move certain data files to my external drive to make room, how do I set it up where new data of that type goes to the new location?
You just save new documents you create where you want to save them.
Thanks for the video
Excellent, as ever
