I was at Robin Hood Airport when the Vulcan XH558 came home for her final ever landing, She gave us one final howl over the field and one final amazing half roll as she banked on to her left wing and then she landed, the small crowd including myseld standing by the airport fence realised we had just witnessed the end of an era. It was an incredible moment of huge pride and huge sadness. Vulcan was in a class of her own.
As a young boy growing up north of Doncaster, one of my favourite and most cherished memories is of laying on my back in the summer sun watching and listening to the "V"'s as they climbed out from, or came in on approach to, Finningley.

I remember one coming over my aunt's house in Cheshire whilst I was out in the garden. It was nearly 60 years ago and it was something I'll never forget. I was, to put it in cliched terms, awestruck.

You are missing my point, you said the Vulcan did not meet modern safety standards, I am merely point out that there are plenty of older aircraft still flying that are far less safe by your analogy. The Vulcan was grounded because she had more flying hours than any other Vulcan, the engines were in unknown territory for operational hours, this in turn concluded her flying days, the expense of flying was high, but not a contributing factor for her being grounded. If she’s had been sold to America she would still be flying, being used for testing equipment.
When my dad was stationed at Offutt AFB in the late 70s, there was a Vulcan squadron stationed there. They were kept directly across the street from our base apartment so I got to see them on a daily basis. I will never forget that howl, such an amazing sound from a spectacular aircraft. I can hear that howl and recall some great memories of watching them taxi/take off and conversations through the flightline fence with friendly pilots and ground crews.

Jesus, that howl is just something primal - like how you’d imagine a dragon or some other mythical creature would sound. I regularly saw these at airshows when I was a youngster, although I don’t remember hearing the howl so much - what I *do* remember is seeing them go vertical and the noise making both the ground and my bones shake. Amazing machine.

I saw them fly at Fairnborough and it was a visceral physical sound that shook you to your bones and almost lifted me off my feet .a never forgotten experience. That and a Saab Viggen were my most memorable sights at an air show

oh I don't know, the USA has had some pretty spectacular aircraft which are much admired here in the UK, F14 Tomcat, Phantom, B1 Lancer, B52 and so on, but I agree this one has a very unique sound and was much loved on the airshow circuit. :)

I feel that I have to mention that one of my favorite airplanes used to have the best "scream" out there before it's engine upgrade. I remember in the 80’s during Abbotsford (BC Canada) international airshow. We were sitting on a small hill a short distance from the airport when a Vulcan flew over. I never forgot the crazy howl and the apocalyptic levels of noise. That was the heyday of airshows in Canada with so many cool aircraft flying but the Vulcan really stole the show for me that year. Now we have portable screens instead of SSTs and space tourism. Who else out there feels ripped off?

I was "Hitching" to Norwich in late 1973 & got dropped off on the A17, alongside Cranwell . As I got my thumb out, a Vulcan took off, hit the burners and I can tell you it was a "HELL OF A LOT" longer than 16 seconds. I'll NEVER forget that.
Maths class always stopped, and the teacher used to let us run to the windows to watch these do their manoeuvres over the Cheshire countryside. The only good thing about maths class. Thanks Mr Llewellyn.
Early 80's I was fishing the K&A canal when the same thing happened, as the Vulcan flew overhead and accelerated the water was shaking, I actually felt like someone was pressing down on my head and chest, an amazing experience I will never forget.
Just imagine how those young Argentinian conscripts felt when they heard this sound on the Falklands, followed by all of the ordinance going off on the airfield, i think that it may possibly have been the last thing they did hear.
I used to watch these while at school back in the ‘60s we were under their flight path even at high altitude their unique vapour trail gave them away. Right up there alongside the Buffs as an all time great aircraft.

Imagine how terrifying that sound must be if you didn’t know what it was or where it was coming from- especially if you were from a part of the world where you’ve never seen a plane up close before (such places do still exist, rare as they may be).
My Dad took me to alot of Airshows in SoCal during the 70s & 80s. I remember seeing a Vulcan -- once (mid-late 70s). It was solid white. It made an impression on my mind even though I saw (& heard) it only that one time. It was so different than the other planes.
i remember about 60 years ago i was with my dad on holiday in leeds,we went to an air show and one of the flew over about 100ft off the ground,everyone hit the deck holding there ears,awesome jet make you feel proud to be british .
At the very end of the clip there is a man in a beige cap deep in thought fussing and looking down at his camera with the long telescopic lens... WHAT on earth was thinking when the vulcan is directly above him for those precious never to be repeated few seconds!
That might be the coolest sound an airplane has ever made. Would love to know what the XB-70 sounded like. I got to see the SR-71 land at Wright-Patterson in Feb. 1990....that was my Graceland 😢
As a kid i used to live near woodford aerodrome where they'd run tests on a summers evening. imagine going to sleep hearing these howl in the distance. great times. the noise still puts shivers down my spine
I have just watched this video and that is a good howl 😀 For 2 and a half yeas I heard the Vulcan howl at RAF Finningly in the 1960s aged from 4 to 6 yrs old and when night flying was on the glass rattled in the metal window frames and we lived on camp near the runway . Happy days 😀

The Vulcan and its howl to me is so ominous, in an apocalyptic way. I'm glad it never had to be used for its intended purpose. Still a beautiful machine.
This thing flew right over my head at Leuchars when I was kid, and it was just 15 solid seconds of "Right, it can't possibly get any louder than that... *Ears explode a bit more* Right, now it can't POSSIBLY get any louder than that..." etc
I was in the RAF when these were in service and witnessed them take off on QRA in threes or fours doing this. IMAGINE THAT? One time we were waiting to cross the runway at Waddington, in an old RAF coach when 4 were scrambled, we were only about 100 feet from the business end of them all, talk about VULCAN PORN!!! 😃😃😃A few of us tried to buy a Vulcan when they were retired including 558 but I had to drop out thanks to a mean bank manager and another couple backed out so we didnt get one😪 we could have maintained it but the ground equipment was so expensive that we HAD to buy with the aircraft. The aircraft was only £7000!
When I was about 14 I saw a Vulcan flying down the River Parett valley in Somerset from above as our school was on top of a hill. Amazing sight and the sound.... oh my god the sound
That is the sound of my childhood, I grew up about a mile and a half as the crow flies from the Avro Site at Woodford where they built these things. My next door neighbour worked there in a fairly senior position in the design department. There were these enormous L-shaped tubes in paired pairs that the Vulcans would be put against to try and deflect the sound upwards. They probably did but you could still hear the roar and sometimes the howl from the engines being tested and feel them in the air and and a slight tremor in the ground. Awesome and nostalgic.
UNREAL... Remember watching in awe at Woodford when i was younger as this thing flew over head. It felt like it covered the whole sky and sounded immense. Built in a time when being British was a reason to be proud. Beautiful aircraft. Our boys and girls are now flying paper aeroplanes and sailing in dingy's to protect us. Austerity my arse. The world is ramping up for war and the government is cutting more and more on our military spending.
Bit late, I know, but when I was a kid my parents lived in a semi-detached house near Woodford, there were two 7' (or so) driveways between our house and the next (so about 15' between the houses), the gutters would be about 20' or so high, I was stood in the middle of the two drives when a Vulc flew directly over my head low enough that I couldn't see either wingtip for the gutters. Ten or so years later, I worked in a drawing office near the runway when the Vulcans were being refurbed, last test before returning to the RAF was a QRA - for years after I was convinced the thing must have had after-burners 'cos it was loud when it started trundling but it scarcely got halfway up the runway before it went 'voice of god' and took to the heavens.
was due to display at shoreham before getting to dawlish that year but as she came in the crash happened there so she was carrying exstra fuel and gave a longer display

Regarding the designers, got to be careful there. A significant amount of the research was done by Nazi scientists at LFA.

I believe it was just too expensive to maintain in a flight condition. The amount if fuel and maintenance required.

I remember this roar from RAF Leuchars when I was a kid on holiday in St Andrews. It will stay with me forever.
I was "Hitching" to Norwich in late 1973 & got dropped off on the A17, alongside Cranwell . As I got my thumb out, a Vulcan took off, hit the burners and I can tell you it was a "HELL OF A LOT" longer than 16 seconds. I'll NEVER forget that.
Maths class always stopped, and the teacher used to let us run to the windows to watch these do their manoeuvres over the Cheshire countryside. The only good thing about maths class. Thanks Mr Llewellyn.

Seeing a flying Vulcan bomber in person is on my bucket list.
Early 80's I was fishing the K&A canal when the same thing happened, as the Vulcan flew overhead and accelerated the water was shaking, I actually felt like someone was pressing down on my head and chest, an amazing experience I will never forget.
Just imagine how those young Argentinian conscripts felt when they heard this sound on the Falklands, followed by all of the ordinance going off on the airfield, i think that it may possibly have been the last thing they did hear.

I used to watch these while at school back in the ‘60s we were under their flight path even at high altitude their unique vapour trail gave them away. Right up there alongside the Buffs as an all time great aircraft.

Living near a couple of their bases as kids we used to refer to the distinctive sound as the dragon howl.
Now, that's a REAL howl. We could already hear it at 0:17. That really is a long howl. We like it. Keep up the good work.
Really quite haunting... and melancholic. It might have been designed for death but ultimately it feels like so much more. I do miss seeing it in the air.

Imagine how terrifying that sound must be if you didn’t know what it was or where it was coming from- especially if you were from a part of the world where you’ve never seen a plane up close before (such places do still exist, rare as they may be).
My Dad took me to alot of Airshows in SoCal during the 70s & 80s. I remember seeing a Vulcan -- once (mid-late 70s). It was solid white. It made an impression on my mind even though I saw (& heard) it only that one time. It was so different than the other planes.
i remember about 60 years ago i was with my dad on holiday in leeds,we went to an air show and one of the flew over about 100ft off the ground,everyone hit the deck holding there ears,awesome jet make you feel proud to be british .

At the very end of the clip there is a man in a beige cap deep in thought fussing and looking down at his camera with the long telescopic lens... WHAT on earth was thinking when the vulcan is directly above him for those precious never to be repeated few seconds!
That might be the coolest sound an airplane has ever made. Would love to know what the XB-70 sounded like. I got to see the SR-71 land at Wright-Patterson in Feb. 1990....that was my Graceland 😢

As a kid i used to live near woodford aerodrome where they'd run tests on a summers evening. imagine going to sleep hearing these howl in the distance. great times. the noise still puts shivers down my spine

For 2 and a half yeas I heard the Vulcan howl at RAF Finningly in the 1960s aged from 4 to 6 yrs old and when night flying was on the glass rattled in the metal window frames and we lived on camp near the runway .

The Vulcan and its howl to me is so ominous, in an apocalyptic way. I'm glad it never had to be used for its intended purpose. Still a beautiful machine.

I was in the RAF when these were in service and witnessed them take off on QRA in threes or fours doing this. IMAGINE THAT? One time we were waiting to cross the runway at Waddington, in an old RAF coach when 4 were scrambled, we were only about 100 feet from the business end of them all, talk about VULCAN PORN!!! 😃😃😃A few of us tried to buy a Vulcan when they were retired including 558 but I had to drop out thanks to a mean bank manager and another couple backed out so we didnt get one😪 we could have maintained it but the ground equipment was so expensive that we HAD to buy with the aircraft. The aircraft was only £7000!

When I was about 14 I saw a Vulcan flying down the River Parett valley in Somerset from above as our school was on top of a hill. Amazing sight and the sound.... oh my god the sound
That is the sound of my childhood, I grew up about a mile and a half as the crow flies from the Avro Site at Woodford where they built these things. My next door neighbour worked there in a fairly senior position in the design department. There were these enormous L-shaped tubes in paired pairs that the Vulcans would be put against to try and deflect the sound upwards. They probably did but you could still hear the roar and sometimes the howl from the engines being tested and feel them in the air and and a slight tremor in the ground. Awesome and nostalgic.
UNREAL... Remember watching in awe at Woodford when i was younger as this thing flew over head. It felt like it covered the whole sky and sounded immense. Built in a time when being British was a reason to be proud. Beautiful aircraft. Our boys and girls are now flying paper aeroplanes and sailing in dingy's to protect us. Austerity my arse. The world is ramping up for war and the government is cutting more and more on our military spending.
Bit late, I know, but when I was a kid my parents lived in a semi-detached house near Woodford, there were two 7' (or so) driveways between our house and the next (so about 15' between the houses), the gutters would be about 20' or so high, I was stood in the middle of the two drives when a Vulc flew directly over my head low enough that I couldn't see either wingtip for the gutters. Ten or so years later, I worked in a drawing office near the runway when the Vulcans were being refurbed, last test before returning to the RAF was a QRA - for years after I was convinced the thing must have had after-burners 'cos it was loud when it started trundling but it scarcely got halfway up the runway before it went 'voice of god' and took to the heavens.
That howl must be the best one she has done
was due to display at shoreham before getting to dawlish that year but as she came in the crash happened there so she was carrying exstra fuel and gave a longer display
