  • If your xbox360 dvd drive does not work reading games or dvd's your laser may be at fault. After time the laser becomes weak and can be adjusted using the dashpots on the back of the laser.
    Required tools:
    Philips #0 or #1
    Multimeter that measures Ohms
    Get an initial reading and then adjust the dashpot till Cd's and DVD's read in your DVD Drive. Without a multimeter adjusting the dashpots may lead to damage of Game disks or the DVD drive itself.

    Xbox died 6 years ago, and then i stumble upon this solution. Dig it up from under my bed and tried it, less than a quarter turn on each screw counter-clockwise. WORKED LIKE MAGIC. Now for a nostalgia session. Thanks Dude

If only the manufacturers were honest. ive had the ports wiggle lose from moving the xbox room to room, Since I've now "modded" my xbox I've also taken advantage of the open top disc share method so i can enjoy the games with my brother in the same house without buying a 2cnd copy. Good advice. I stopped using volt meters and multi-meters though. My buddy in the Geek Squad showed me this new tool and it's awesome. I can see wave forms like an oscilloscope but it auto-sets and in under a minute I have the laser lens adjusted. It;s called Service Scope and it's sold by Hickok Tools. It's a lot cheaper than a regular scope too.

    I wouldn't recommend doing this without the multi-meter. IF YOU DO, don't do it a quarter turn or half turns. Turn it about the thickness of a penny test it, do another small adjustment, test it until you get it to read. IF after only like 3 adjustments it doesn't work put it back to where it was this isn't your problem. After that stop messing with it. I did a quarter turn and it worked, i went to bed woke up the next day kids were playing it. I decided to borrow my uncles multi-meter I checked it and had it running way to hot. It would've burn out the laser in no time. After tweaking it and checking it with the multi-meter I found out that even the smallest turn makes a HUGE difference in the ohms. Don't do it without the meter if you do, then only turn in in VERY small increments while testing it. And I mean SMALL turns like the thickness of a dime or the thickness of a penny.

    Hey buddy! Guess what? Because of your super nifty and seemingly unique video I FIXED MY XBOX!! That being said, i did it wihout a multimeter. I turned it approx 1/10 a turn counterclockwise because it was less of a turn than you made. My xbox has never worked this well. If theres a way to tell that this is the issue without a multimeter thatd make a great video.

  • @1969RSCamaro
    @1969RSCamaro Před 11 lety

    Sometimes you can just drop a new laser in and it's set to go. Other times you absolutely need to adjust the laser resistance. Otherwise the disc won't spin up. You can take a perfectly running drive and adjust it so it's out of whack, that can cause it to not spin up. If the drive doesn't detect a disc right off, it won't spin.

    Hi, I just put a laser in my DVD player from a brand new unit and it won't read two sided discs. The other unit will not play at all now. Both units were working before the swap. Does the laser diode need to be adjusted? These are both NOS units and the parts are identical so the lasers should not be weak. Any ideas?

    If anyone is sitting at home mad they can't get their disk drive to work and have tried other things then you need to try this. Took some time with adjustments which were very touchy for mine. But its up and running again. Was gonna go buy a new xbox tomorrow. But all good. Get a multi meter and turn the screw in small amounts. Don't rush it with huge turns.

  • @Jay-May
    @Jay-May  Před 11 lety +1

    No, randomly turning them is not good. If you turn the laser to high it will burn your DVD's, turn it too low and the disks won't read. Its better to use a multimeter and get the readings off the pots before you adjust them.
    All drives are factory set and have different settings, although a general setting say 4.0 could be set and then work up or down from there.

    Old post but I was hoping I could shed some light on this. My Lite-On drive read 5k-ohms for the left screw and 0.7k-ohms for the right. Assuming you guys mean k-ohms, I adjusted the pots to 3.4k-ohms and 1.2k-ohms and unfortunately no change in performance here, so I adjusted them back. This xbox 360 is having a tough time reading backups but I'm not sure it's the drive. It works when the drive is not screwed together but not when it's put back together. Some discs show static like video in dvd scenes but I'm thinking now might just need to flash the os.

      Mine also read kohms. He definitely meat kohms since a couple ohms can happen just from a straight wire and the potentiometer adds resistance.
