Steffi had to play this final injured, full of pain killers.
And her dad had been jailed just a few weeks earlier.

Sadly her food disorder took over afterwards.
And she couldn't fight against them while being on the Pro-tennis tour simultaneously.
It took her years after her professionell career to loss wait.
She required a lot of patiences and assistance due to her trauma & her gained weight to "love" herself again. Furthermore she spend two of her best years away from the sport.
Suddenly she wasn't a teenager anymore & every Newcomer was taller/or more muscular than her (before the '00s).
She couldn't keep up with the rising Sexappeal on court & probably didn't wanna wear a revealing mini skirt, too.
I think the Outfits from the 80s & early 90s looked far better. Seles and Graf always looked stunning without showing almost the entire leg & wearing tanktops.
These days (2024) at the right climate conditions it is possible that a sudden wind blow show us a female tennis players underwear.
      Why?
So not necessary - I watch sport & not *it.
It let's them come across less professional wearing those hideous dresses at times.
Nowadays those Outfits get shorter and shorter.
Well, sadly times have evolved backwards.
Such a superficial & shallow socitey at times (2024).
I guess without the attack, her father's early death, her mental & physical "injuries" and the different type of upcoming female players - ended her career sooner than expected in 2003/04 (last match on the WTA tour).
Officially it took five more years before her Manager made it Public that she isn't going to return (2008) again.

I never watched a whole lot of her tennis before, until this week - when I watched this little video titled "the quick hands of Monica Seles" - you could really see just how special a talent she was. And on top of that, just like Federer she is a super genuinely nice and good person. Very very easy to root for.

@@kofipokuantwi-boateng5446 depends on your definition of a blueprint. You could argue that Chris Evert in the late 70s was the first prominent player to play the modern game involving strong, sharp groundstrokes from the back (with a one-handed forehand and two-handed drive backhand) and few moves to the net. Tracy Austin and Andrea Jaegar played similar games in that era. At that time the conventional game was serve volleying and a one-handed backhand mostly hit with slice.
Nick Bolletieri then upgraded that style with more powerful flat ground strokes. His pupils in the 80s included Carling Bassett, who was like an early Mary Pierce. His 90s pupils included Jennifer Capriati, Mary Pierce, Andre Agassi and Jim Courier (all with similar games). Seles was also a Bolletieri, protege, her two handed forehand didn't take off but her game plan was overall the same. She and Agassi were the most successful Bolletieri pupils ever.

Discussions about Steffi’s two Wimbledon titles would be ridiculous, obviously.
Even Steffi‘s USO 93 win is a no-brainer, IMO, considering that Seles never beat Steffi on such a fast hard court surface.
AO 94? Steffi was so much better in winter 94 at the AO and in Tokyo than in 93; she was devastating in the AO final, one of her best matches ever. I don’t see how Seles would have beaten her there.

@@jamesr2164 You are a liar, I never try to diminish Seles's accomplishments.
It is YOU and your despicable comrades who CONSTANTLY try to diminish STEFFFI'S accomplishments.
Everybody knows that Seles only won so much in the early 90s because Steffi was in a bad slump (due to off-court problems).
Steffi had made 13 slam finals in a row - and suddenly missed 6 of the next 10 slam finals.
Steffi was 20-3 win/loss against Sabatini - and suddenly went 1-7 win/loss against the Argentinian.
If that is not a slump....
You are a fanatical hater,, obviously an American.
I am sometimes afraid for Steffi, living in a violent country with so many fanatical haters there....,

So disrespectful from Graf to go hug and high five her family before shaking hands with Monica. As for the handshake between the two, notice how it was always real nice and friendly when Monica lost but real cold when Graf lost. Monica was graceful in defeat. Graf was a sore loser.

Seles played her two best ever USO tournaments in 1995 and 1996. Clearly better than in 1991 and 1992 when she won the title.
But THIS time it was Steffi was waiting in the finals, not Sanchez, not old Navratilova.
    And not a slumping Steffi.
And so Monica lost of course.

No, there had been many players in the past on the men's and women's tour that emoted sound when striking the ball way before Seles arrived. I on the other hand have no problem with grunting. Yes some players can be quiet as a mouse, but in all reality it is a very physically grueling sport so it's not surprising that most players emote some kind of sound when playing a match.
