We bought a (crumbling) chateau! Ep.1

- čas přidán 2. 07. 2024
- In our very first episode we tell the story of how we became custodians of Chateau des Vieilles Vignes in the village of St Julien D'Eymet in the Dordogne. Our purchase was complicated by the fact that the chateau was owned by 13 people as a result of a family succession, and one of the owners was a minor under the age of 16 who required a judge to sign off on the sale. All of this took place during the height of the pandemic, which made travelling to and from France for the completion a complicated affair.
The Chateau Adventures charts the adventures of Nick and Nicole (and their son Noah) as they take on a renovation of a lifetime to bring back to life an ancient 1,000 year old chateau nestled amongst the vines in the small village of St Julien D'Eymet in the Dordogne.

Feeding a horse treats ……. open palm with treat on top …… congratulations on your journey
To give treats to the horse, open your hand flat and place the treat in your palm. The horse will pluck it from your hand with it's lips.
Looking forward to following your adventures and progress.
My wife and i (she is Norwegian and i am a kiwi) moved last year from Norway to our old stone house on an island in Croatis.Like you guys we bought a ruin and renovated it over 3 years spending every holiday at the house with building painting, planning etc.
Your place looks incredibly charming and it looks like a very nice quiet area to enjoy life when it is finnished.
Mike and Gina.
Thank you Mike ☺️ that sounds like a great combination 😀 and your place sounds idyllic. That must have been quite an adventure. Hopefully you’re now reaping the rewards from all your hard work 😊 We can’t wait until our renovation is done… a long way way to go!
After working on a variety of old houses in the Dordoigne over the last 40 years I recommend you completely defoliate the exterior as soon as possible a remake good the main metal roof guttering where the foliage has forced behind it. You’ll be glad during your winter rainy season! Bon Chance! 🙏
Great shout! Thanks for the insight 🙏🏼☺️
My late mother bought a few of these while she lived in the Dordoigne. they are basically very old derelict homes that have been abandoned. No real value to speak of but arguably more fun than just building a new place for the same eventual outlay. My Aunt is still there 101 and still well!
Thanks for sharing. Great to hear your mum is still going strong at 101 too 😌
@@thechateauadventures 🙏❤️🇬🇧
I just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to watching your vlogs. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Amazing, thank you 🤩
Anxious to watch your adventure. I follow a lot of other chateau vlogs and my suggestion would be to watch some of the most successful ones, The Pethericks, How to renovate a Chateau , Escape to the Dream, Chateau Beau and see what makes them so successful. There are some key elements. First thing I would suggest is get yourselves a couple of mics. Looking forward to your journey.
Thanks. We do follow several already - appreciate the other suggestions; we will check them out. We do have mics now, but with these early episodes we never set out to create a CZcams channel, so we are using the best footage we have. The voiceovers are with microphones though, which hopefully comes across ok 🤞🏼
To feed a horse snacks: put the snack on the palm of the hand and hold your hand out completely flat. The horse will take the snack off your hand without accidentally biting you. Great new channel. Wow a lot of work to get through over the next few years.
Thanks for the tip! 😊 so pleased you like the channel 🙏🏼
Best wishes to your family and loik forward to watching your renovations.
Amazing, thank you ☺️

Congratulations on starting your new adventure. Will be cool to watch your progress...make sure you film a full outdoor walk around of buildings and a full inside tour of each floor and roombefore you start your adventure so your children and grandchildren can truly see what it looked like before you started. I know many times I wish my parents did a full detail tour of our house before they started years of renovations. Wishing you much success.
Such a great idea. Thank you! And Happy New Year! 🎉

Thanks. We’ll need all the well wishes we can get ☺️ and keeping fingers crossed CZcams might help bit once we’re more established with our vlog.
@@thechateauadventures You are off to a good start, sending good vibes from Tasmania, Australia... in fact, there is a lovely Australian couple just starting the CZcams journey, in the same region of France you're in. They don't have a Château, but they have made the great leap into the unknown in a small village. They are called 'Darlene in the Dordogne'. My friends and I will follow you with interest.
Thank you@@gavsintasmaina We will check them out! 😊

Nice project and bone chance
Thank you. Our inspiration for starting a channel was indeed from the other châtelains on CZcams such as How to Renovate a Chateau and The Chateau Diaries. Great to have more recommendations for inspiration🙏🏼
@@thechateauadventures True… and all projects have difference in seize etc…
In order to catch views I like your style in spirit ….so keep expermenting
So happy to have found your channel, especially episode 1 !!!!! Watching from Ontario Canada. Will you be posting regularly on certain days of the week?
So glad to have you along for the adventure. ☺️Currently we plan to release an episode every week on Wednesdays. Would love to produce episodes more regularly, but as new parents who also run their own business and are knee deep in DIY I think once a week might be the best we can do for now.
Best wishes for 2024 in your endeavours for your new home.Enjoy the fun and newness of the experience. In my small experience of big room renos is do one room at a time while designing another on paper.Looking forward to your vlogs.🎉😀
Thank you. ☺️ we are definitely planning to take it slow one room at a time. The project is far too overwhelming otherwise 😶
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year,,,,,,,,what an adventure ! I must admit i am a bit jealous as you are living the dream I once had . I can't wait to see your progress ! keep well Cherryl from Canada
Thanks for your kind words, Cherryl. Merry Christmas. Sorry to hear you didn’t get to fulfil your dream of owning and renovating a chateau.
It takes incredible fortitude to jump in with both feet and tackle such a monumental task but when we wreck-o-vated our home I had to think in individual jobs or projects not looking at the big picture so it didn't become so overwhelming , I wish you much strength for the years ahead ! keep well !!! Cherryl from Canada@@thechateauadventures
Can’t wait to follow your journey but Nick can you slow down a bit when you talk. I missed a lot of what you said.❤❤
Amazing. Thank you!
I’ll do my best… with the caveat that the next few episodes are already finalised but we will certainly look at that as we’re currently editing episodes 5 and 6. ☺️
It is a excellent first video!! For having watched many chateau videos I want to warn you...please ignore all the mean, insensitive, rude comments. There are people that shock me for what they comment. They must be very angry and unfulfilled. There is no excuse. I apologize ahead of time for the atrocious comments they right.
I love your chateau, I am liked and subscribed , notified. I look forward to getting to know you better. Congratulations...🎀✨🎄🎄🎄✨🎀
Edited correction: write
Thank you. Appreciate the heads up re some of the less kind comments. I’ve think we’ve escaped relatively unscathed so far, but it is the very beginning, so will no doubt come back to your wise words when needed ☺️ lovely to have you along with us for the adventure!
Looking forward very much to your progress. I noticed where you were working on removing the render, by the corner wall on the window side, that there appeared to have been a door there in the past. Also looked like a lintel going across the top of the stonework. I love looking for this sort of detail. May be wrong. Just an idea. Onwards and onwards!!
Thanks. Yes, well spotted. There a several doorways that have been closed and new ones opened over the centuries. We’re still deciding which ones to go with.
Best wishes to you both! Liz
Thank you ☺️
Hi, I just discovered your channel. Thank you for putting them in order. It was a little difficult to follow your progress. You are doing a very enjoyable job with your channel and your huge project!
Thank you ☺️ glad you found us.
First fan, into the first épisode ..🤭 très beau projet
Merci! 😊
Second fan! Proud to join you :-)
Interesting concept in the European mindset to save dilapidated structures. My BIL in Asia
once said it wasn't financially feasible to save/restore. Rather he torn down 2 of our family
homes (Old white elephants) to rebuild in other areas. But then, he loved modern.
We find so much beauty (and history) in old structures. But, it’s not cheap to renovate! The reason there are so many abandoned places in France and elsewhere is because it is cheaper to build new. However, I think it would a shame to allow such beautiful structures to fall into ruin. Hopefully we can do our bit to restore at least one of them 🙏🏼
@@thechateauadventures I agree! I found our one old monster mansion a great
beauty despite crumbling neglect. My hubby's mother sank a small fortune
trying to keep up with all the problems. She never really got ahead. Finally, it was
decided that the old place would have to go. We built new but kept the old place.
35 years later, it was sold to someone who demolishes it and built a shopping mall.
10+ years later, even he found that such a large structure was hard to keep rented
and so he too, sold.
Watching from sunny Florida.
Oh wow 🤩
So much stone work to do. Hope you don't plan on doing it all yourselves. The damp and leaky roof will be a battle that continues to break down the structure.
There is A LOT, yes. We’ll definitely be relying on some extra pairs of hands! And yes, the roof is a challenge we have yet to tackle. It’s patched up for now and hoping it will last through the winter 🙏🏼
First thing to do is the roof. You should not try to restore anything until the leaks are stopped.
Congratulations on the new adventures !! Trop contente de vous suivre à partir du 1er épisode!! And as a lot of other followers wrote, connect with other château "renovateurs" to get support, ideas, tips, contacts...like Dan Escape from rural France👍👌

Thank you ☺️ we absolutely will.
Congrats 🏆❤️💎🇩🇰
Looking forward to this renovation. BUt please please lower the music level. I suffer from misophonia and have difficulty splitting music and words. It makes it very difficult to follow what is going on. Subtitles do not help much as trying to follopw them I miss whats happening on screen. Many thanks ATB regards from the UK
Thanks. Will definitely take the feedback on board. We’re still getting to grips with the software, so will hopefully get better as we progress 👀
