It's always super heart-warming to hear Adam talk about welcoming everyone into making, and about sharing knowledge ,and being supportive of each other. The world needs more of this attitude in general. It's also true what he said about enthusiasm: It's like love, it multiplies when shared! :)

    Hi Adam,
A hopefully helpful trick to find tiny parts, which hide on a floor of the same color:
Dim the general light and place a slim flashlight like a maglite on the floor, and turn the beam over the floors area - even smallest tiny bits will cast a very noticeable shadow (and btw this helps as well to "scan" the area very concentrated without distraction.)

If you have a shop, please please please get a master switch installed at the entrance that powers-up your entire shop. A switch you can flip off your way out and flip on your way in to power up all the outlets/lights in your shop.
Having a master switch will vastly reduce the chance of a fire starting when you're not there. Shops often have old equipment, overloaded powerstrips, flammable substance etc. When you leave the power should be off everywhere.

Bob: "The most terrifying day of your life is the day the first one is born.
    "
Charlotte: "Nobody ever tells you that.
    "
Bob: "Your life, as you know it... is gone. Never to return. But they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk... and you want to be with them. And they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life."

I love that you are working on wing design. Of all the styles of wings, owls amaze me most ( king fishers are a close second). I watched a great comparison of how much noise different birds make in flight and the owl is essentially silent. As a mechanical engineering technologist the structure of owl wings is fascinating. Aesthetically they are majestic as well. They strike me as a great example from nature to examine while you consider making a pair of wings for yourself.

As a parent, your children will surprise you. When they are born, you need to adjust your priorities. You become a gardener of sorts. Those children are seeds, but they don’t come in a packet labeled with what kind of flower or plant they are. Your job is just to water them, give them some sunshine.
I am somewhat of a maker, which is partially why I am a fan of this channel! Of course, I’d love for all my kids to have the same passions that I have, but that is not the way it works.
Thankfully, one of my sons is an amazing maker! I actually live more vicariously through him and what he does. He even works with a local company that builds puppets and animatronics . Currently, due to the pandemic, he and many of his coworkers had to be put on furlough. But that freed him up to build things with wood as a side project.
So it’s fun to see the things that he builds. But it’s also fun to see what his brothers are becoming. Still young, to some extent, they like their video games, as it seems most teens and young adults do. But they do like their outdoor adventures, a passion they share with me. I may not be skilled at Subnautica or whatever game they are playing, but we enjoy a good camping trip together... and hopefully rafting, if this new year allows for such activities.
So parenting is less of a distraction, and more of a course correction, in my opinion. Keep up the great work Adam! A fan of yours and the whole Myrhbusters All Stars! Kari, Grant 😞, Tory, Jamie, Jessie 😞, etc...

The last question was "Is there a hard-to-find tool that you use every day?" Adam couldn't think of one, or if he did think of this couldn't mention it because of the tool itself...It is lack of ego. His welcoming and supportive demeanor stems from his lack of "ownership rights", like when he was speaking against 'gatekeeping' while trying to encourage others in the makerspace, as well as acceptance of his limited amout of control over anything that is not himself or his actions, like when he said "This IS what is happening" when speaking hypothetically of getting rained on. The knowledge that love doesn't get split but instead multiplies might be the tool that allows these other tools to exist in the first place, and so it might be considered the best one (that isn't as common to find as I would like to here on our little sphere).

    @edwardpaulsen1074 Před 4 lety +1

I also wanted to comment on "No Gate Keeping"... I pretty much agree with openly sharing your knowledge with others who become interested however, there are a couple of exceptions that I do employ on occasion... the first is "Clear and Present Danger"... this usually only applies to people you might already know and involves when they start showing interest in something inherently dangerous without caring about proper precautions and training (like rocketry) and you know that they are and have been distinctly careless in many things and especially in not respecting danger (like lathe or milling without proper glasses or shields!).. Those are people I will actively try to dissuade until they prove their dedication to being safe because I would like to keep them whole and healthy! The second type is when you have been working on a project for quite a while and you talk about it too openly and somebody swoops in and makes said project, based upon your work, and sells it for nothing more than profit (not actual interest) and prevents you from recouping your investment. Normally, after recovering most of the money I spent plus a little more to help fund the next project, I freely share... but keeping your cards close to your chest before releasing the project information and details can make the difference between continuing to be an independent maker and surrendering to the normal "hourly" job market!

That bit about stuntmen injuring themselves more with rubber swords than metal ones reminds me of the statistics that show that if you give police non lethal ammo, they are more likely to shoot at suspects. Or that bare knuckle boxers are less likely to get brain damage than those with gloves. So I think it's a mental barrier thing. You hesitate more and think more about the blows you give and take with the hard and heavy stuff. You get more relaxed about swinging and whacking away at people when you don't expect it to be as harmful.
As I'm typing this I imagine a city planner misunderstanding my intent and starts to remove railings on roads to make drivers drive safer and police armourers issuing depleted uranium ammo to cops so they really hesitate to shoot people. All I meant was that sometimes making things safer makes people less careful. But safety is to be pursued nonetheless because, in general... It does work as intended.

As a former Radioshack employee who managed a location that stood for 2 decades, I can enlighten you why the Radioshack Reboot failed. My original manager had been with the company since the start. and he knew we were in a death spiral long before it started, he noted the following things: the entire corporate office in the last 10 years of the company had replaced all of its staff with young new hires. When I had been with RS for 4 years, I had more time with the company than any single person at the corporate HQ. All this young talent had something in common, they weren't good at what they did. They had degrees, but they didn't have knowledge or experience to back it up. As a result they started destroying the company when it had already been at a financial lull. They placed items the elderly would purchase on the top shelf, and rewrite the price sticker and label to be font size 6 or smaller. They would stop carrying key things that we were known for having, and we turned into a cellphone store. Heres the crazy thing about that, we knew it was a bad decision. Years before, RS purchased a cellular company in Texas and tried to make it profitable, it couldn't be done, nor could it be done on the backs of the big 3 (ATT, Verizon, Sprint). We tested the waters and knew it was failure, yet we stopped doing everything radioshack does, and we just became cellphone outlets to move units for the big 3. As a result the company burned all of its money and died.
the TL/DR: Radioshacks corporate HQ replaced every single person with young unexperienced people. Not a single person in corporate management in the last 10 or so years, actually knew what a radioshack was. and those are the people who dictated what every store put on its shelves, how the store was organized, the future direction of the company, the whole thing. Why this was allowed to happen, I'll never know. My boss was PERFECT for going to corporate and leading the company, at the time he was within 15 years of retirement age, was one of longest running RS managers, and was honestly overqualified to be manager of a retail store. The knowledge and experience that RS needed was there the whole time, and in direct communication with corporate. Corp just turned over everyone so fast, they forgot who they were.

I would not mind that rant, to be honest. But I think you got the point through, and I could not agree more. Coming from a historical craft background I have heard a lot of gate keeping from everything to what exact tools to use, and how hard it is to learn these crafts and so on. Same thing when I started with performing with fire, there was a lot of secrecy in what fuel to use, how to do things and all that. Me I gladly explained what to use (if nothing else, you avoid people trying to breath fire or using highly combustible/explosive fuel and ending up hurting them self or others).
I tell anyone I meet that wants to know how to make things, that just makes more people make things, nothing else.
To me, that is the real meaning of sharing is caring.

Dear Adam love these chats but I have a question about the format..... Can we get recorded live feed of this also as a podcast when it's posted on CZcams....
The thing is I'm having to watch it in bits becouse of famely ( 3 boys and wife ) responsibilitys.... It occurred to me that I have plenty of time when I do my job as a mail man to listen to it then....it would be a nice distraction addition to the existing podcast....
Hope you can make it so thanx love the work....

It's always a good idea to model your projects in CAD - or Cardboard-Aided Design.
    Carry on!

@@coreymonday1375 I don't know why they did that, it really didn't change much on our stores where I live. The old stores looked fine, nothing wrong with it. The "remodel" was when I stopped shopping there

@@MattManProductions i agree with you but ill tell you it was obvious to me that radio shack was ran by idiots because the remodel ruined my favorite store aswell they use to sell these small rc cars called xmods and you could upgrade everything on the car ...motor shocks tires suspension...ect and and me and my friends would draw a race track on the floor and would race each other and it was a blast and after the remodel they stopped selling all rc cars thats when i stopped going to radio shack and the crazy thing is i got paid very well to remodel these stores ...and if your curious no i didn't have anything to do with designing the remodel all i did was get the plans and hire a team to make the design happen but your absolutely right they ruined them

Re Gatekeeping - This. So much. I admit to have been absolutely the *worst* gatekeeper that ever shat on an enthusiasm. Once you start doing that, it is incredibly hard to stop it. It is a seductive self-praise. But the worst is recalling with deep, crawling humiliation, all the times one has been "that jerk".
    Just dont even start
