      Here is the deal Daniel. Someone has to litigate DMCA tackdowns, but no one ever litigate. You clearly have a case, and if *you*, a really feisty CZcamsr does not litigate, no one will, and the system will stay broken. Someone has to fight for the system to change. You are entitled to Damages from Netflix for a bad faith DMCA notice (17 USC 512(f)). You win and everybody win - that's how Precedents works.
      The companys would get scared from other suits and Class Action, which will make them step back from excessive DMCA notice.

    Publishing houses USED to guarantee at least some quality regarding spelling, grammar, and a somewhat decent plot, now they don't even do that.
    Another problem is that they don't promote new authors at all. The author have to do all the heavy lifting for them to the publishers to even consider them, and at that point, what's even the point to sign a contract with them?

    I'm GenX and have been reading steadily about a book a month for the past 30 years so I've gone from browsing the bookstores to googling "best of the year/decade" lists, to following various booktubers.
    The issue I tend to have is that I don't know what I can trust online. Not trying to "throw shade" at anyone because it's just like any recommendation that you'd get from a fellow reader, everyone has slightly different tastes and what works for them may not work for me (Rage of Dragons and The Poppy War both being examples as I found them to be not that enjoyable while booktube seemingly loved them). But there's also the omnipresent question of "why is this person pushing this book? are they really unbiased if the publisher sent it to them for free?". This gets reinforced by the deluge of social media pushing things like Fourth Wing and any of the Sarah J Maas catalogue. Why???
    There's nothing like going to a bookstore and browsing the shelves but for the last decade I've found it harder and harder to find what I want to read (sci fi, fantasy, historical fic) because there are just a few authors that get pushed to the shelves. In the last few years it's actually become easier to find interesting titles in the YA section, and while the quality of those is fine there's definitely different tone to the writing. Also, any bookstores that are left are now half books/half other housewares and crap so I find myself going less and less. Almost all my browsing the shelves is online now.
    Am I open to new reads from smaller publishers and self pubs? Sure... as long as I can find them. I don't read e-books or audio books, I want a paperback in hand, and some of these are almost impossible to find. Or if I do, they're ridiculously priced (Gunmetal Gods and Promise of Blood, I'm looking at you).
    What I miss most is the disappearance of the used book store. There were several in our area, now there's just one and it's a drive to get to. I could almost always find something second hand that was preferable over anything new, with the advantage of being half the cost.
    Oh, and don't get me started on the whole Broken Binding/Owlcrate/Fairyloot/limited edition/book box thing. Sure, some are nice to look at and I wouldn't say no if I was gifted one, but this trend is being entirely driven by social media and FOMO.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor Před měsícem +4

      Discovery is almost the entire problem with selling your books. Its not that people don't want them, it's getting the people who like them to see them, hence the importance of covers so people can judge the contents.
      Booktubers are a useful tool for anyone looking for books I agree, and Bookbub can be worth checking out (as in, sign up for their email in your genre). I miss when Amazon had a page for each genre that highlighted new books honestly and had some human editing going on, that was quite nice (although I'm sure it was a very limited selection). What I do with reviews for film and TV is find people with similar tastes to mine so that they aren't going to hate say, Batman just because it's Batman, but instead because Nolan made terrible choices about minor things like, how to represent Bane and who he was in the story (a henchman? Bane is a henchman? Pfft).

In the 70's and 80's the primary source of genre fiction for many was the Science Fiction Book Club (or it's variants for mysteries and such). Authors were faced with the same kind of 'take our prices or miss out on a huge chunk of the audience" situation.

    I was someone who spent many afternoons in bookstores as a child, teenager and young adult... Then, they disappeared one by one. I tried reigniting that sense of finding a book off a shelf by visiting my library, but lost interest in books for about 20 years. Occasionally I tried to get back into reading, but it hasn't been the same without being able to pick up the physical copy, feel the cover, read the synopsis, flip through the pages and see the font and formatting inside. I'm a tactile person. I've recently started setting a small goal for one book a month and it snowballed into one per week because I was eager to read, but couldn't afford anything more. Without being able to afford my habit of purchasing a physical book anymore, I switched to my kindle and a subscription to consume three books a week. I lost interest... again... trying to keep it charged and from hurting my eyes with the continuous screen viewing.
    Anyways, that's my two cents on the last 40 years of my life reading books that I've been doing. We need bookstores to buy books. I personally need a physical book in my hands but am poor and can't afford them.
    I'm writing a novel now and hope that I will publish soon.

    I think some of the shopping trip bit you did highlighted a part of the problem you didn't intend it too. That being the cost of living at the moment pretty much world-wide. People aren't buying authors they don't know because they have less money to spend and there is a risk they won't enjoy it. But celebrities and influences *feel* like less of a risk because they feel like they do know them, even if they haven't read any of their writing before.
    This is why, (I think) publishing houses expect so many new authors to do their own marketing and promotion - because it makes more sense to them as a business to promote the 1% of sales of 'larger' names rather than try to more evenly help all authors and have more of diverse revenue stream. I'm not saying I agree with this - I don't - but I can see why it is seen as a safer option. I also believe that it is costing us all because I know several authors who will never so social media (most of which is video based now) for reasons as varied as not wanting to expose their children to that life, to their content being likely to cause them trouble from bigots in their own community, to it being downright unsafe as they have a stalker, etc.

Why would I give up a huge percentage of my take-home just to have someone do a worse job marketing my own book? I'd never get as much internal attention as one of these "Cash Cows" so why even play the game? The "Validation" of trad publishing is diminishing every year. Self-pub is going to be the way to go for most people.

    Another crazy thing I've come to understand about trad VS indie pub is that trad is not necessarily better quality on things like artwork and editing. And they're making more and more authors that come to them do their own marketing as well. There are just fewer reasons to go trad every year. The biggest hang up indies have is that initial investment to get a book fully edited, but kickstarters (and other crowd funding platforms) have been helping get over those hurdles for some authors. It's still rough for anyone who even wants to break even out of the gate though. Some are doing it and thankfully they're usually not shy with helping others with tips and tricks to do it themselves.

    Not at all surprised by the fact that traditional publishers are pretty much looking for trends instead of unique stories. I grew up having a dream to see my own books physically in a book store, but it seems less and less likely that I'd ever want to attempt traditional publishing; especially with this news. I'd rather give up on my dream than EVER try to fit some boring old trend. Books to me aren't a source of revenue but a source of imagination and wonder. There is no world where I'd spend the time to submit to a traditional publisher, wait a full year to hear anything from them, only for them to tell me they wont accept my work because its 'trendy'. Screw that noise.

  • @Sharpclaw2000

    I'm 35 - been reading fantasy since I was very small. I am a filmcritic and work part time on different cultural projects. My take is this: Reading in general has gone down. Yes, even with booktok (which is a movement that should have been more careful with what platform it chose tbh. Tiktok is heavily censured, meaning authors that say or write the wrong things wont ever be big there.) I find books to be more expensive now, especially english language books that are imported here (I am Swedish.) An english book in a bookstore here will cost me, if its a pocket, like 20 USD. You know those fancy dune hardcovers? yeah cost something like 40-45 USD. A swedish book will cost me 5-10 sometimes even 15 USD if its really fancy!
    Of course i understand why taxes try to support a small language like mine, but it is also annoying. it forces me to buy a lot of books on places like audible or amazon, even though I would prefer to do otherwise. And no it doesn't support swedish publishing because most of those books are translated from english to swedish. so its really annoying that the translation is that much cheaper - when I don't even want it translated to begin with. Most swedes speak fluent english.
    The production rate of books have gone up. Like before, you would have to wait a few years for the next book in a series. But now, the author and the editor spit out the next book within a year, and the next one arrives with similar speed. It is too fast and the scripts for the books really suffer because of this. The quality in some of these books is just horrendeous and I'm insulted that they even try to sell it to me. Like.... if the author genuinly doesn't care about the story they only want it out to meet their deadline - it really shows in the text. I'm thinking of Maas here since she is the worst offender that I can think of right now. But I just read Leigh bardugos The familiar and it made me feel the same. jeeebuz just let the script rest a bit, and give it a once over, before you publish. Because these scripts have so many scenes, so many pages, that should just be cut! And scenes with meaning, that build the story, those need to be developed and extended. It is so hit-and miss with many of these authors because they just don't take the time to create a good product.... I mean that Leigh Bardugo book was published at Penguin... PENGUIN.... they have all the resourses in the world and this is what they do with it? pffff. I can't respect it. sorry. I'm happy I only paid Audible for it and not the horrendeous 35 USD that the bookstore asks for it!
    The trendchasing is boring, because you can really tell what inspired the books, and rarely is those sources ever stated. Fourth wing? - yeah it interacts closely with dragonriders of pern. except, dragonriders of pern is way slower, denser. I'm not saying that makes fourth wing bad - but you can really tell the difference in production rate. Dragonriders of pern would never be published today! Atlas six? It's the magicians. Just a more rough script. unfinished. Like look at it! It is undeniable.

    I bingewatched the two movies back to back just a few days ago, and hoo-boy, was it a massive example of nobody ever asking Snyder why things just happened in the movie(s) - baffling scene jumps and random story beats wrapped in an astoundingly non-sensical plot. Still, it did have that "so bad that its badness itself becomes entertaining" quality slathered all over it. And on a more practical and positive side, it probably kept a lot of movie people employed, so that's something.

I'm an introvert x10, I don't have a following on any social platforms because it's not something I'm interested in, and again, INTROVERT X10, yet, I do want & hope for major success on my debut novel. It sucks that publishing is more concerned about profit than creativity, when there are so many writers like myself hoping and dreaming for that Hunger Games, G.O.T, Twilight success. These people are placed in positions to discover greatness no matter who's the creator of it, or how many followers they have on various platforms. I feel like now the best thing I can do is not give up, make sure the story I am writing is highly marketable and query agents who I believe genuinely want to discover new voices.

    If you want to sell, you have to be popular and known. You're not selling some generic tool that can be put on a hardware store or something. It's the nature of the game. It's always about being a celebrity and the big sellers offsetting the small ones or the unsuccessful ones. At any rate, you're always have to be some sort of celeb - it's jsut a matter of degree.

    • @missmusic4951
      @missmusic4951 Před měsícem

      This is only partially true. Big names are supposed to pay for the small/new ones in the sense that the money from best sellers is meant to find, fund, and *support* the nurturing of new careers, the non-celebrities. In a healthy system, top tier, mid tier, and new tier coexist in a cycle. It's only been until the past decade or less that trad pub has pushed for celebrities and people with platforms only, before then anyone with a good enough story could walk in off the street and have a decent shot at a career with a little apt timing and some luck. Money/fame has always helped, sure, but writing all of trad pub history off as 'well yeah it's always been a place for celebrities only' is simply not true.
      And it's definitely not true that *only* popular people sell. The key is not popularity, it's marketing. If strong marketing behind a new, unknown author with a solid project never worked we wouldn't have any big names (or a mid-list) to begin with.

    For me, it doesn't matter if the book is a "traditionally published" book or an Indie book. I have really enjoyed most of the Indie books that I've read(like The Lawful Times books). I usually base what I read on the cover, title, synopsis, and what people I trust recommend that I read. I don't really pay attention to awards(especially after that whole Hugo Award thing) or what publishers are trying to push. I started reading Brandon Sanderson only because I went to his Elantris book signing that he did at my local library. And now I've gotten one of my best friends to start listening to his audiobooks.
    We have a nice, cozy used book store where I live(so cozy that they actually have a couple of resident cats) that I used to go to every Friday to buy new books. The owner at the time knew me by name and always paid attention to the type of books I would buy. And whenever he got any books that he thought I would like, he would hold them in reserve. Thats the only thing I kinda miss about going to actual physical book stores. I kinda wish we could go back to those days.
