  • After giving birth to her second child and returning home from the hospital, Maile began to feel extremely fatigued. Her OB-GYN told her that she was likely just dehydrated and overexerting herself. Within days, Maile was in the ICU in #SepticShock. In honor of Maternal Sepsis Week, she’s bravely sharing her story to help us raise sepsis awareness.

    absolutely insane that this woman wasn’t taken seriously. i’m an EMT and if i got a call for someone with her initial symptoms, i would be getting there on lights and sirens ASAP as well as pre-notifying the hospital for suspected sepsis. i don’t understand how this was missed by so many people.

    As a disabled RN, and someone that’s survived sepsis several times, I’m so incredibly sorry that so many health care professionals failed you. Additionally, I can’t understand how a Dr would prescribe narcotics when your blood pressure was already so incredibly low. Every single new parent, should go home with a simple pamphlet that outlines the signs, symptoms, and severity of sepsis. Hopefully through channels like this and further education for all health care professionals, sepsis will be recognized at a much sooner, therefore preventing complications and death. Prayers for continued healing!!

    Finally found another woman who went through what I went through after child birth... what annoys me is I can not find more information on Streptococcus A and sepsis after childbirth. I contracted streptococcus A back in 2011 after having my daughter. Like yourself I had flu like symptoms. I ended up in intensive care with all my vital organs shutting down. I spent the first month of my baby life in hospital fighting for my life. I have felt alone in my journey of recovery because no one ever understood how bad it really was. Thank you for speaking on it. 💕

      Went through sepsis after childbirth as well. Was very close to death and a stroke. This definitely needs to be spoke about more often. My body fought off all antibiotics they gave me until they finally found the right one. We are very lucky to be alive. Wishing you well.

    Wow, thanks for putting out your story. Im sharing it. I had a gf in Winsconsin now deceased from heart complications after avascular necrosis and drug use. In her 50s. She had several surgeries like you with her joints. She never had kids. Her sister had died a few yrs before of cancer. She used to call me every day in Canada. She died same day as my mother jan 14, 2013. Please get better, im thinking and praying for you.

    OBGYN didn't test for infection / sepsis. Very unknowledgeable for a doctor I would say. My mother died of septic shock, a b.p. of 50/50. The nursing home wasn't quick to figure it out. Nursing homes are incompetent place w/ high death rates due to negligence. My mother Maria died on Christmas Day. I no longer will celebrate that holiday. Nursing homes are NO way to go . They are unskilled dying rooms, nothing more. My mother died because of their poor knowledge of what sepsis can really do. IT KILLS.

    I too had septic shock and kidney failure immediately after my second kid was born. 6 hour labor and delivery. 8lbs 1 oz. He was healthy. I spiked a 104 fever about 3 to 6 hours after child birth. I stayed in ICU for 10 days. Went home after 2 to 3 weeks. Turns out my urine was backing up into my kidneys the entire pregnancy. I guess the way the baby was sitting in there was pressing on my bladder funny. It's sad to say that out of my 3 sons ..the 2nd son I never really bonded with after birth. He and I don't speak. It hurts me but it's by his choice. I had another son only 1 year later and I was fine ... my first son I was fine. It's so strange how it just happens for no reason. I'm glad you are better. I hope your body fully recovers... my only effect is that I have chronic kidney stones. I've had 6 surgeries.

      I had sepsis & septic shock due to kidney stones. What works for me is lemon juice, small servings daily, (2 tablespoons in ice tea and 1/4 cup in ice tea every other week.) Seems to stop KSs forming. also apple cider vinegar, blueberry & cranberry. Drop glutens' wheat & oats. I'm sorry about your second son. Remind him it wasn't his fault, focus on the positive.

    I thought before watching videos like this that sepsis survivors always had to undergo at least one amputation. That's what I honestly truly thought. I didn't know you could still keep all your limbs/digits even with sepsis.

    This is not ok! What kind of hospital discharges a mother, who gave birth and had some complications, the Day after?! Then they said she was dehydrated... What a crock of crap! I know hospitals are notorious for doing things, that doesn't mean they should!😡

    • @purselmer5931
      @purselmer5931 Před 3 lety

      I remember this distinctly. All of my children were induced and born on Fridays. No c-sections. The first was in 1995 and I wasn't discharged untl Sunday. Second child born in 1997, same time frame. Third? Birth on Friday, discharged on Saturday. Between 1997 and 1999 there was a huge push from insurance companies saying that the extra day wasn't needed. They ran into a HUGE amount of medical problems b/c of this change and switched it back. Had twins in 2005 on a Friday, all went home on Sunday.

    Her ob-gyn is pitiful. Any blood pressure reading below 90/60 is a clear sign of potential sepsis, and means the patient needs to immediately go to the ER.
