    16oz or less I use poly bags. Anything non clothing I'll wrap in bubble wrap. Anything over 16oz I'll use flat rate envelope, legal flat rate, or padded envelope.
    This is my protocol that I follow and has saved me a a lot of money. I'll always try to ship at the lowest cost depending on the size and weight of the item.
    1oz to 16oz poly bags
    Flat rate envelope - $6.55
    Legal flat rate envelope- $6.85
    Padded envelope- $7.25
    Saving .10 .20 .30 cents times over 100 sales adds up to dollars. I hope this helps anyone. 👊

      if i’m shipping shoes that are like 2lbs can i still use poly mailers ? and if so what shipping is best? first class, priority i’m so lost on what’s the difference lol

    • @oldshoe1
      @oldshoe1 Před 5 lety +1

      shayna s. 1oz to 16oz is first class mail 2 to 3 days.
      17oz and up you can do priority mail 2 to 3 days
      Another option is ground mail which is slower, but might be slightly cheaper. Item can take more than 8 days to arrive. USPS has a shoe box which is free at your post office. For 2 pounds it would be around $13 bucks, but location will also determine price, or see if the shoes fit in one of their flat rate boxes which is also $12 plus. You can try offer up and Facebook market which is what I do for heavier items, you will save yourself shipping cost.

In the future I think a lot of us would love to see longer videos going into greater detail regarding some of the topics you briefly cover (e.g. how wrapping things in bubble wrap is more eco friendly than ordering padded poly mailers). I know you guys put a lot of effort into the production of these shows, so maybe you're not able to make longer videos, but I definitely wouldn't mind less production value if you'd go into greater depth! I'm so confused and hoping someone can explain how she could ship that sweater for $2.50. Based on the usps guidelines, it would be more than 1/4 inch thick...so wouldn't that make it a "package" and not a "large envelope"? And if so, the cost would be more around the $5 range and not $2.50, right? I have been wanting to sell on eBay but I cannot for the life of me figure out shipping

    @Lumi, if I'm shipping a plastic bowl for my business (think standard bowl size), do you think a poly mailer would work given the durability of standard plastic or does it really have to be a soft thing like a sweater? Thanks!

    • @msugirl9268
      @msugirl9268 Před 2 lety

      Yes, it will. However, if the plastic in your bowl is made from a type of resin that has a high fragility (breakage) level, you would want to try it first. Dropping it in a polymailer from a 30" drop height will give you a good idea.

      Hi there! Great question. Most poly bags are #4, LDPE. In many US cities, you can recycle poly bags wherever you recycle plastic grocery bags - usually in a dedicated drop off spot at a grocery store.
      They need to be recycled separately from other plastics simple because the thin plastic film jams up the machines that sort through recyclables and end up costing facilities lots of money while they shut down the machines to pull out the bags.

    Dose this mean the box you said that's $10 would be cheaper if you put it inside the poly-mailer? Or just the content of the shirt itself?

    • @ShippingThings
      @ShippingThings  Před 6 lety

      The dimensions of the poly mailers are determined by the dimensions of what you put inside. So if you put the box inside of the poly mailer, you'd be charged for the dimensions (LxWxH) of the total package. Boxes on the other hand, have one set of dimensions since they aren't flexible.

    Hello! LOVE the videos I've seen so far. I am a former Amazon & Wayfair employee - Packaging Engineering Global Management. I looked at your website and I couldn't get my quesitons answered because I don't have an account (yet). Is there a way to have a chat (yep, a real, person-to-person chat) so I can see if I'm a good fit for Lumi and if Lumi is a good fit for me?

    How are the actual mailing dimensions figured? if you have an object that is 4" x 4" x 5" in an 8x10" bag, do you only measure the dimensions of the item itself??? thanks!

    • @ShippingThings
      @ShippingThings  Před 6 lety

      Great question! When it comes to shipping, the only dimensions that matter are the exterior dimensions of the container you're shipping in. So if you're shipping a t-shirt in an 10x12 poly mailer, you would calculate shipping rates for a 10x12 envelope.
      Pro-tip: Some folks fold down more flexible mailers (like poly) when they seal them to make them smaller to accommodate whatever their shipping. 👍

    • @KarePassion
      @KarePassion Před 6 lety

      Thanks for getting back to me. I have seen the mailers folded over. I have seen some bulky items in the mailers. The bulk would not make a difference in how the dimensions are measured??

    • @ShippingThings
      @ShippingThings  Před 6 lety

      The bulk affects the depth of the package.

    • @KarePassion
      @KarePassion Před 6 lety

      I am sorry for being difficult, but I am having some trouble. If I send a 3 dimensional object in a poly mailer, the only dimensions that matter are the length and width of the mailer?
      If you send a padded envelope, they measure length, width and thickness (or depth). So it seems that the measurements would encompass the 3 dimensions of an object. Is this not the case? Sorry for pestering, I just want to make sure I understand. Thanks for your help!!

    A serious question: how do you ship a sweater for $2.50 using a polymailer? Even if it's lighter than 16oz, USPS First Class Package Service would cost more than $3. Thanks

    • @ShippingThings
      @ShippingThings  Před 6 lety +2

      When you work with a shipping API like Shippo or Easypost, you can get lower rates based on your volumes. You can also negotiate your contracts with carriers directly to save as you scale.

    • @ShippingThings
      @ShippingThings  Před 5 lety +1

      You can recycle poly mailers wherever you recycle single use plastic grocery bags. In some cities, that's curbside, and in other cities, it's at a dedicated drop-off.

    wait but don't most recycling places not even take LDPE which is what poly mailers are made of according to your other video on whats recyclable? It seems like in most counties at least in california (where i'm at) you have to drive to someplace specific to recycle them, which I wish wasnt the case and also I don't think consumers would find convenient, which defeats the purpose of trying to encourage people to recycle
