  • For this video I'm comparing a set of light gauge vs heavy gauge electric guitar strings, 10's vs 13's on an Archtop Jazz Guitar, to check if there is any tonal difference between guitar string gauges. I'm using a Thomastik SL110 for the 10's set and a Daddario EJ22 for the 13's set, and a Ibanez AF-200 Prestige.

I do think it does on an acoustic carved archtop if the (round wound) strings can really vibrate enough to get the archtop body vibrating.

I recently have the same conclusion switching from 12s to 10s flats, and finally prefer the 10s. On this type of guitar, which are more electrics than acoustics, it brings more resonance and it seems easier to have a « not too boomy » sound. Moreover, chords are easier to play and with 10s flats, you are not so prone to out of tune chords even when playing a little harder, the tension is greater than with 10s rounds I think. I think I will also try 11s rounds to increase sustain while preserving warn tone. But the pick has also a huge impact. At the end, you can have a pleasant tone with different gears, what matters the most is to be confortable with the instrument with the way you personally like playing (softly/harder, with lots of chords or not etc).
Oh by the way, I love your playing style and tone, and thanks for posting videos with purely acoustic or hybrid samples. This is quite rare. And I am more and more attracted by the « hybrid » sound to benefit from the acoustic punch and definition of the guitar combined with the warmth brought by the amp

Thanks Herbert! I really appreciate it. It's great that you took the time to experiment with different strings. It took me a long time to decide which one I preferred. And yes, I totally agree with you. One of the most important things to keep in mind is your comfort when we´re talking about string gauges

For me, string Guage is mainly a right hand feel difference. Especially if you want to play dynamically, how the string reacts to your right hand is such a personal thing.

I too have just stumbled into your channel. Very nice, musical playing and great sound, whether the 13's or the 10's, they both sound excellent. Kudos for your fine touch! It was that string gauge question I've been considering myself. I use a hybrid D'Adarrio Chrome set 13,15,20,28,38,48 "fat top with lighter bottoms". My favourite gauge back in my blues/rock days.....long long ago, were any 10-46 set.
However I'm having dual issues of wanting clearer chords, singing melodies while also wanting to lighten the touch under my LH. I'm no youngster and finding the work a little too hard. And BTW, I'm interested to know what pick you use...same for both performances? Thank you for posting.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. I know that finding the “right” strings for yourself can be a long and complicated journey, but one of the things that helped me the most is to keep an open mind and try other things that might not be well considered in the style you are playing. Worst case scenario trying something you don't like gives you more perspective and points you in the direction of finding what you're looking for.

If I remember well I'm using a Dunlop Prime Tone pick. I made a video comparing some picks with that shape if you are interested. czcams.com/video/rQO2jL4YB9E/video.html

Estic molt d'acord que la diferència en so entre els dos calibres no és gran cosa, i que al final el to depén més de les mans, de la pua, de l'angle d'atac de la pua...
