  • Phil Easy shows you the results of his garlic experiment. How close is too close when it comes to garlic plant spacing. Wish I had tested this long ago. Great info if you want to increase your garlic crop but not take up more space. Useful if growing large amounts for selling garlic.

    Very interesting. :) I'm very new at gardening although I'm very old in age, BUT, it's never too late to start. Garlic is on my list of things to grow! Thanks for sharing :)

      Hi Vicki, thats great that you are into gardening, and correct never too late to start. Garlic is a very easy crop to grow and so good. Make sure to get it planted in the fall. I have a playlist of garlic videos that will take you through the whole process that you can check out. Thanks for the comment. Happy gardening!

    That’s fantastic. Your soil must be very rich.

      Hi Ming, the soil is getting better every year, the garden is about 3 years old. I think the compost I add each year makes all the difference. Thanks for the comment.

    I've had success with 6" so I'm going to try 4-5" this time. I've also had some smaller bulbs with 6" but it seemed to be more related to fertility and weed competition than spacing.

      Hi James, good info thanks for sharing. I put all (4344) the garlic at 4", hope my research is correct. Probably should have done a third at the original 7" to compare. .. I have had all sizes of bulbs at 7", super large to super small. I agree with you some of the sizing has to do with the fertility and weeds (need to keep them down/non extistent). Also I understand genetics play a role as well, big cloves big garlic, small coves small garlic. I will keep everyone posted on how it turns out next summer. If you could let us know as well that would be helpful. The more info the better. Thanks for the comments

      @@EasyGardenHacks Absolutely. You also touched on another question I had: any proof or anecdotes of small cloves = small bulbs? I know that is the prevailing wisdom but from what I understand the cloves are clones, or identical genetically, yet maybe clove size still matters. I'll try and test it this year.
      Also I should note my garlic seems to do better when I blanketed it with leaves after it sprouts (Zone 8A Texas)

    I have had good results with 50 bulbs in 4 feet by 4 feet bed. Cheers!

    Hey, did you lower your spacing for this year’s (2021) crop and if so, what were your results? Also, what zone are you growing in?

    • @EasyGardenHacks
      @EasyGardenHacks  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi, yes I lowered my spacing to 3". See my latest garlic video "the darker side of garlic" for details. I had my worst crop yet, I feel it was a couple of factors including the spacing. What happened here is just before harvest time we had a "heat dome" which led to prolonged extremly high temps even at night for this area. It was also the time that I usually decrease/stop watering as that can have a negative effect on the crop. (too much water too late in season = trouble like splitting garlic bulbs). My entire crop yellowed in the ground. I tried watering but could not bring it back. I feel the close spacing meant more water uptake in the same area but I did not adjust my watering for this. I think all lf those factors led to lack of water that led to the poor outcome.
      That being said I just finished planting over 4000 cloves. My crop was smaller (size of bulbs) but still ended up being decent enough to increase the overall crop.
      I ended up going back to my 7" spacing for 90% of the crop and did the 3" spacing for the rest. I want to test both spacings at the same time. I will also be way more focussed on the crop and watering so anticipate much better more specific results.
      Bottom line. If you are considering tighter spacing. Make sure you will be able to water properly. Also weeding can be difficult/pain when the plants are so close together. I would also do some regular spacing as well ....just in case
