- Part of the plans for the backyard vegetable patch build was to add a small Fish / Frog and now Turtle Pond. The pond is about 8 meters by 4 meters and has a wetland bio filter for maintaining water quality. Pretty happy with the result. Just need some more Lilies and some border plants for the lower wall.

I love Seeing someone else doing it truly by hand.
Beautiful, simply beautiful!
Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy!!
Rod
Thanks Rod. Glad you enjoyed it.
WOW, The birds and critters will love this water-hole .
GREAT JOB
They have so far. Birds especially love taking a swim. And some pretty happy turtles to be out of their indoor tanks.
Excellent!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Filming the initial water as it worked it's way through the filter overflow was brilliant!
Thanks Stephen. I was glad to see my levels were not a complete disaster.
Absolutely fantastic pond. 👏👏👏
Thanks Kim.
Nice job. It looks absolutely fantastic.
Thank you very much!
I'd love seeing an update when things are more established in it!
I have a Turtle Video that shows it further along. I will do one next spring when the garden has established.
@@simonhahnel8092 I tried lilies with my turtles and they ate them as fast as I could put them in the pond.
Your big size and build is really amazing. Love it.
Thank you! Cheers!
Put a solar air bubbler in as well, in case the electrify goes out, they are nice back ups for oxygen and movement in case that happens. No fish death or stagnant water. They are pretty cheap.
I think this is a good idea. Priority no. 1
Excellent!
You made a masterpiece !!
I think it is beautiful!! Niek
Thanks.
Fantastic job!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Really nice pond. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely pond, good job!
I also like the part where one of your family helps you
Thanks. Love sitting out there in the evening feeding the turtles
For a 1 man job.. this is grand work!
To be fair my daughter did help me roll out the rubber lining an supervised some of the digging. 🤔
The lily pads were a nice touch, and great for the pond too :)
Hopefully they will double up this spring and give the fish and turtles some good cover.
Great little video - thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Matt. My Turtles are loving the pond.
Hello Simon..doing the best your day..
Just found this today but it is an awesome build!
Thanks Tony. It was well worth the effort.
Should have a higher snorkel clean out pipe, clearing out rocks, plants etc to get to it would be a pain. You can paint it black if necessary. I put a fake Lilly green pad around it, then an upside down brown clay pot at the rock level with a frog glued to it.! 😂🐸 didn’t have to but if you need to dig through your rocks or whatever to clean out you may have some drop in and clog it. So much easier with a higher “snorkel” you can get to. You can still add a sleeve then add an extra higher pvc then a screw on cap. I just add the other thing to hide it. I see you added your skimmer to it, pretty cool. If you ever need to add a snorkel to one of the other ends you have, or put an elbow in for your skimmer with the straight part going down to the bog pipes. Pretty cool design! Love it!
I think a pipe extension is on the cards as I need to clean out the underground pipes.
Awesome video!
Thanks! Digging was the hard part. Lots of good advice from the company I bought the liner from to make the wetland filter. Just went to visit the pond and it is still crystal clear.
I r so meticulous. Pond will last for a long time. Thank u.
Thanks Barb. 12 months on and it has 6 turtles and goldfish that keep increasing in numbers. Water still crystal clear and now the Lilies have grown up the string Algae has gone away. Love sitting out there on evening and watching the wildlife enjoying the watering hole.
Nice, all those stones put it over the top.
Thanks. It does look part of the landscape now. Pretty happy with the result. So are the Turtles.
Very nice and well done thank you sir for your post
Thanks Jerry. I do enjoy sitting on the deck and watching the local wildlife going about here business.
Awesome pond.
Thanks 👍. Still running crystal clear and fish and turtles loving it. Fish just need to be wary of the Kookaburra.
I don’t understand your skimmer, you feed your skimmer from below, but covered from the rocks from really skimming. I still recommend you add a longer shelf for the flow from the bog to create air in the water when it spills in. If the fountain is off they need the extra air in the water when it’s really hot.
There is no Skimmer. All the leaves fall to the bottom and feed the lilies. I think an additional aerator might be the solution to keep the fish safe.
Wow what a great build I really enjoyed the video my friend - I subscribed.
I love what we call bog filters they are the best.
Thanks. I really enjoyed the build and gave me something to do during COVID lockdowns
Looks great
Thanks!
I do recognize some some of the countryside. I am from Canberra
Bravo Simon🤗
Thanks Andrei. Just had 2 ducks make it home.
👍🏼 nice job.
Thanks! 👍
Come and finish mine !!! Great job and looks fantastic
Thanks. Sit by it most evenings and feed the 6 turtles now living in it.
harika olmuş eline sağlık.

Beautiful pond, and i want to see how you decorate your cabin please show us next video.
Me too
You ever take a dip in it? Wonderful work! Thank you for sharing.
Just wade about looking for Turtles. My wife has. Not intentionally though. Slippery surface.
Brilliant work. I’m currently building one but my dogs like to dig in the water do you think they will be able to puncture the epdm??
mandou bem tio
Can you put a Little Rock ledge so the water has to crash down making air bubbles vs just flowing down and in from the bog into the pond.
🙋♀️👍👍
Merhaba çok güzel oldu. kolay gelsin. selamlar
Teşekkür ederim.
Very unique bio filter. Do you have a good turn over ? That filter a great idea.
It now has 4 Resun King 24 volt pumps. 2 x 4000 Ltr per hour and 2 x 2500 Ltr per hours. So all up 13000 liters per hour flows through the filter 24x7.
Using your video as a template for my own build. Hopefully I don't muck it up lol. Great and informative video.
Thanks. Still working well 12 months plus on.
@@simonhahnel8092 Just got my liner in today. Concrete work tomorrow :)
Are you in a location with freeze-thaw?
@@tonkawatergarden Thankfully no. We may have a few days in winter that get bellow 0 but not by much and not for long enough to freeze over the pond.
@@simonhahnel8092 czcams.com/video/Wf5S_PoNqdw/video.html Thanks to your video my pond is coming along nicely ^_^
Simon it turned out lovely. Will you have turtles and frogs only, or do you plan some small fish? Well done you!! O.K., so what's next? The country cabin looks great and I'm sure you aren't finished yet. Hope you are enjoying your summer. Can't wait for more updates. Cheers!!
I have some Goldfish, Silver comets and Shubunkin. Kookaburra's have been thanking me ever since. I need to add more lilies for extra cover.
@@simonhahnel8092 I've never heard of Shubunkin, are they in the goldfish/coy family? The parrots are beautiful and I love seeing them in your videos, but from what I understand the Kookaburra's can be a bit of a nuisance. Do the other birds bother the fish or is it just the Kookaburra's?
What kind of fish are going to put in it???? I imagined tons and tons of rainbowfish since you are in Australia that would be amazing to see thousand rainbowfish whipping around in the beautiful water!!! I like this pond great job;!!!!
4 Turtles in the End. The Kookaburras keep eating the fish.
Awesome work.
One question, how do you clean out your wetland filter? After a few years it will clog up, correct?
It is clogged up. But with the constant water flow and the pond now being full of lilies and the biofilter full of vegetation the water is always crystal clear. Except when I wade in and pull out excess weeds and clean the pump filters. Amazing how quickly that even clears up.
Where are you based? looks Australian. Nice pond. Any worries about punctures in the liner during construction?
Yep. Yarra Valley Aus. The liner is a rubber based product and very good unless a very sharp object is involved. My dog could happily wander around in the pond without issue.
How do you clean out that large filter
Snake maybe? Just a guess.
Probably the go. Not got that far yet. I have a plumber friend with a water jet snake that would probably be perfect.
would this have been big enough for koi?
I would think so. I have seen Koi in much smaller.
I see you didn't allow for an overflow. Where will the excess water go if you get an inch of rain in one day?
There is an overflow at the top right corner where the pond liner extends to the grass on the far side. About 10mm lower than the rest of the pond.
Great job. Thank you for including so much info about the liner etc. Did you look into the air lift pumps / bio filter system by David Pagan Butler?
czcams.com/video/jispyhI0g7A/video.html
The water is circulated by an air pump instead of the water pump
For best success pick a spot with low solar energy there's less temperature swings and less energy going into the water you don't need a lot of light to grow plants algae likes a lot of light and nutrients plants will make your water crystal clear
I am trying to grow as many water lilies as possible to cover 70% of the pond to keep the light down in summer. I have heard this helps.
this video is so quiet ughh
