    When I visited Japan about a month ago there were quite long lines at the immigration but a woman came to check passports and said Japan, Finland no difference and I got to go to the domestic desk where there was no line. I love Japan!

    The mention of the risk of pickpockets got my attention - visited Japan many many times between the 1990's and 2010's and never even heard of such a thing happening even in crowded tourist areas (compare and contrast that with Paris where every single trip either been pickpocketed or more often thwarted attempts and often multiple attempts per trip - lets hope Japan never gets like that!!!)

    payment with foreign cards have commission, bank commission and exchange commission (in most cases) so you will end up paying a lot of fees. While going to an exchange location and change your currency to JPN currency is the best option. Or withdraw bigger quantities while going to the ATM or bank.
    Banks like Revolut allow you to exchange to JPN free or paying almost no fee (which will lower the ATM withdraw costs).
    Furthermore, is very important to keep using cash as much as possible (and forget sometimes about the convenience) because stores pay high taxes for having payments with cards (and the upcoming CBDCs, also in Japan, will completely eliminate cash if we stop using it. And this can have serious implications on privacy and you could be easily censored).

    great info. I will be in Tokyo for 9 days after 4 days in Osaka (where I will get my IC card). In Tokyo, I know they talk about using the IC card or just paying to get on JR (especially that loop train they have in Tokyo) but I am the type of person that is hopping on/off the subway and buses so I figure the 3 day Tokyo subway/bus pass may be better for me. Opinion?

    • @JanMyler
      @JanMyler Před 2 měsíci +2

      Do the math. Mind you the 72 hours Tokyo Subway ticket is valid only on Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines (buses are not included, JR and other train operators are not included). There is a separate 1 day pass available for Toei buses (there are also other bus operators in some areas around Tokyo btw) and 1 day Tokyo Combination ticket which includes Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway + Toei bus + JR lines (Google for the exact list).
      Saying that, I personally never took a bus in Tokyo in my 6 years here and would not recommend to tourist as they are more confusing to figure out than trains.
      If you will move around a bit, I would probably go for the 3 day Tokyo Subway ticket but be aware of the limitation in train operators.

    Hi, interesting video!
    It seems SUICA is somewhat returning, even if in limited and unspecified amounts.... do You know if it is possible to purchase or convert a "My Suica" card? (the one with personal name printed on it and not refundable, but never expiring and replaceable if lost)??

    • @JanMyler
      @JanMyler Před 2 měsíci

      Both unregistered and registered Suica/Pasmo cards are refundable - you get back the 500 JPY deposit + any remaining balance. However, Suica charges 220 JPY handling fee, Pasmo does not.
      For a short term visit, there is not much of an advantage of getting a registered card. Regular unregistered Suica card expires after 10 years from the last use. You can get those now in some big stations around Tokyo. You can also try to get a Pasmo card from the vending machines at some stations (e.g. around Denentoshi line).

    In my 8 trips to Japan since 2016 the relatively long processing wait times through immigration and customs at Narita and KIX hasn't been significantly reduced by the Visit Japan Web ... If you haven't filled out VJW or the entry forms on the plane you will experience extra delay filling out the typical forms especially if you're waiting in line for a pen 🖊️
