Dr. B tells the story of one of Durham, North Carolina's Black Wall Streets. The Hayti District was founded in the 1880s and became one of the first self-sufficient African-American communities in the country. At its height, Hayti was the location of over 200 diverse black businesses.
Hayti declined after urban renewal projects razed 200 acres of land, much of which was located in the business district. In addition, the Durham Highway Project bisected the neighborhood, thereby displacing residents and businesses.
Hayti's story is important from a historical context. In addition, there are lessons to be extracted from this story for both present and future road mapping.
I appreciate this history lesson!
As a Haitian man I approved this video ✅

Great video!
Thanks for the feedback! It’s greatly appreciated.
Displaced my uncle’s shop and chopped up my grandmother hair salon, the stress caused the beginning of ill health of my grandfather.
I’m so sorry 😢 to hear about what happened to your family. This is one of the reasons I am telling this story. At some point, I may document Hayti’s story and others in a book. Hopefully, you’d be open to connecting.
When the highways were built, that was the plan to disrupt the success of African -America communities. I learned so much, looking forward to the next video.
Thank you for the feedback @aishadarby. Destruction by highway is a common theme. Check this video out if you have not already done so czcams.com/video/8B178rs-pHg/video.htmlsi=e59f6ySubes7LT4o
Miami's Overtown I-95 cut through this once vibrant section of Miami where famous musicians, actors, public speakers could reside when visiting South Florida
This was real informative, thank you!
Thank you for your feedback @engineeredmojo. I appreciate you. Stay tuned for part two where I highlight Durham’s other Black Wall Street. That video will drop early next month.
I appreciate the information, but why Hay-"TIE"?
That’s how the community members pronounce it. It is meant to be a derivative of Haiti.
Thank you. 🐂city
You’re welcome. These stories are important!
