    I’m late, but if anyone reads this… maybe try plain water before moving up to soap.
    I found the most gorgeous beaded lace over satin dress at a thrift shop for a whopping $25 several months before my wedding. It still had designer tags, and I was told later that it had already been partly altered for someone my height with almost my exact build, but had never actually been worn.
    The problem was a giant, very obvious brown coffee stain on the satin train part on the satin under the lace. The person altering the dress had apparently just given up on it after the spill, and I’m guessing the bridal shop just replaced it with a new one, because the stain was horrible, and they couldn’t just easily replace the fabric. They just left it there.
    I honestly loved the lace and fabric so much, I bought it anyway, thinking I could cut it up and make it into a pillow, maybe shorten it into a rehearsal dinner dress, or use the lace somehow.
    I brought it home and just decided to run the satin with the stain under some cold water, and by some miracle, that dark brown stain that had been there for years just disappeared right before my eyes-in seconds. It was like it had never happened! I was completely dumbfounded!
    I suddenly had an absolutely gorgeous, perfect designer wedding gown for $25 that even a stranger at the thrift shop said looked like it was made for me.
    I had never been so excited to buy something polyester, because I think the stain just couldn’t penetrate the fabric.
    It was definitely a gift from the universe, because things were really tight, and we had to plan a wedding on half a shoestring.
    The icing on the cake was when my then fiancé and I happened to stop into Goodwill just after a tuxedo shop had apparently gone out of business. There were racks of gorgeous tuxedos that were either new or were still very rentable, and great as my deal was, my husband found the perfect tux for a whopping $15! We took these amazing finds as a sign that the universe thought we really should get married!
    My rambling point is to try the least harsh method-just plain water-before you even try anything else, because sometimes that’s enough, and it might save your dress from unnecessary harsh treatment. It might even save the dress!
    Now I really need to drag that dress out, however, because I never got it cleaned after the wedding-eleven years ago, and I’m still afraid to look! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

    I like how you washed the dirty parts separately. Some videos show them putting all of the dirty hem parts in with the clean top part and I think it might get the rest of the dress dirty. My daughter's dress said to NOT use OBA - Optical Brighteners which are found in OxyClean and so many videos showed using that. Her dress also said to not dry clean or put in a washing machine. Make sure you check what the symbols on the care label mean. It is always best to wash as soon as possible before the stains are more set in.

    • @mkuti-childress3625
      @mkuti-childress3625 Před 2 lety

      I’m considering using my washing machine just as a tub that fills easily with water-no agitation! My bathroom and kitchen are way too small and there is no guarantee I won’t back into something that might damage it.
      I’ve read that you should also rinse the dress a couple of times with distilled water to avoid hard water deposits, which sounds like a good idea!

    I'm a clothing re-seller and one of my favorite things to do is to buy wedding dresses and restore them to their former glory for resale. My advice to everyone doing this as evidenced in this video is to take your time, be extremely gentle especially with more delicate fabrics, get help from someone to do this, and to have patience because depending on the severity of the stains, this is generally a 2+ day process if you add in all the dry time and factor in the volume of larger gowns with a lot of netting, trains, and fabric.

      @Marina Anastasia if the fabric can we washed without destroying the fabric or decorative elements, set it outside hanging for a couple of hours (not in direct sun as this can sun bleach certain fabric). Then soak it for about 6 hours in oxygen (check fabric to make sure this is okay), then put it in a fine mesh laundry bag and wash with a mild detergent, then hang and let air dry. If the material can handle it, you can also add scent boosters to the wash.

      Doing mine today, got married in 2015, my niece just told me she wants to wear my dress. My brother passed away last year and so did her mom. She lost both parents in 2021. My brother walked me down the aisle and I think that may be motivating her to want to wear my dress. So I am washing it today. I washed my mamas dress after about 50 years this way as well. I think they get cleaner with soap and water than with all those chemicals. Thanks for the tutorial!
