  • A new volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in the south west of Iceland. The eruption started at 9:26 on Thursday the 22nd of August after increased seismic activity. The eruption is in the Sundhnúksgígaröð area, in a very similar location to the eruption that occurred last May. The nearby town of Grindavík has once again been evacuated and the lava flow is currently not posing a risk to infrastructure or life, although there is concern that it might eventually reach the cold water pipe that runs into Svartsengi power plant.
The eruption site is currently CLOSED and Civil Defence ask people to not visit the area. Reykjanesbraut remains open and international travel is unaffected.
