- In this episode of Fresh Tracks, Randy Newberg is joined by friend Jim Baichtal in Wyoming to chase pronghorn. Jim is a geologist and avid hunter who resides in Southeast Alaska. To make things more interesting, he hunts strictly with a blackpowder rifle.
They have no trouble finding plenty of antelope, but Jim needs to get within 100 yards to make an ethical shot with his set up. Early in the hunt he gets close to a nice buck, but decides to pass. But thankfully, there are plenty of antelope and it doesn't take long to find another mature buck. Jim ends up finding a suitable buck and makes a stalk within range, and gets a great shot with his blackpowder rifle.

Jim next to Randy is my favorite hunter. Would love to see more of him. I've watched this at least 5 times... lol
One of the best episodes ever filmed IMO
Thank you.
This is one of the greatest episodes of any hunting show and so is the Alaska hunt with Jim.
Jim is my absolute favorite guest hunter. I wish he made more regular appearances on the show or even had one of his own.
Jim’s attitude and just overall happy nature make it almost impossible to not be happy yourself. That was a fun hunt to watch.
He's a pleasure to be around. I am blessed for the times we get to spend together.
Actually meet jim years ago in NW Montana. I was able to harvest a nice whitetail buck and ran into jim at a friends house looking for help getting him out. Jim without hesitation loaded up and went with an absolute stranger. When we arrived at my buck his excitement was just like what you saw in the video. I have never meet a person that truly loves hunting and the outdoors like jim. Congrats Jim on the buck you truly deserve it.
That was an incredible buck.. Hope you are doing well...
Jim seems like the kind of guy that oozes knowledge that one could just hang out with him and soak it all in. Well done!
This may be a year old video, but one of the best! Well done!
That took some serious patience, and the reward was awesome. Great job!
Randy, growing up in Wyoming, I have to agree with you on the beauty of the high prairie. I crawled on my belly to shoot my first antelope in southeastern Wyoming. I got him and a few hundred cactus thorns in my front side. Well worth it!
It sure is a places that tugs at my heart. Some might think it is ugly. To me, it is enchanting.
One of the best hunting productions yet. Would be great to see more of Jim in the future
That beard just OOZES hunting wisdom! Good to know that same beard shakes with adrenaline when a job well done ends in a beautiful animal. Awesome 👍🏼💪🏼
Randy and his hunts motivated me to get after pronghorn this last season and I had a hell of a first hunt. It was quick and 2 hours in downed a good(to me) 68" buck and saw one that appeared to be bigger.
I now find myself looking forward to these hunts more than even my bear hunts which i thought were the pinnacle of western game, but these goats have me completely enamored.
Thank you Randy for introducing a southern guy to what amazing opportunities these western states have.
I have watched almost all your stuff Randy but I keep coming back to this video. Pretty sure it’s my favourite. Jim is a great guy and it’s a great hunt. Here is hoping I draw pronghorn up here in Saskatchewan in the next few years.
35:26 is what it’s all about! That needs to be framed and put next to the mount! Amazing job!
Jim is the man. He is as respectful and appreciative as he is skilled.
I've been binge watching these episodes on youtube for the past month, and this is my favorite episode without a doubt. The chemistry between Jim and Randy on camera is so charming and entertaining, and this hunt was incredibly suspenseful.
Wow what a hunt! Back to basics with a master hunter. The camera man listened and did his part, great job. Loved the bantering between two old friends. This hunt will be told for many years to come.
Yes, neither Jim or I will forget it anytime soon.
That actually got a few tears from me. That man is so truly appreciative of the animal, the place, and the pursuit. Well done, Jim. Makes ya glad to see a dream come true.
Thank you....
C'mon October! My youngest daughter and I have drawn antelope doe tags, for our first western hunt, can't be more excited! Coming at ya, Wyoming!
Good luck. It will be a ton of fun.
Fantastic Hunt!
Magnificent Buck!
Congratulations
That episode was all Jim and Michael, Randy was along for the ride. Great hunt!!
Yup. Was fun to be the spectator with the "box seat."
Randy you are like the Al Michaels of hunting video play by play. No matter if you're doing the hunting or just filming a friend you and ur crew make the BEST hunting video's. Thank you for always showing God's creatures the respect they deserve and showing us this great land we have in are country. Jim congratulations on a beautiful buck and thank you for sharing your hunt with us.
Stunning! Beautiful! Intense!
This video truly captured the essence of a Wyoming antelope hunt.
I felt as if I was there with the 3 of you.
Fantastic job Michael.
Great character Jim.
Wonderful joy and friendship Randy.
You guys really knocked it out of the park on this one! ^5
Thanks for the kind comments. Glad you liked it.
I'd love to see you two on a black powder elk hunt.
We are scheming as to how that can be arranged.
Shoot, I would love to hunt elk with Randy and one of my flintlocks!!! I build them and hunt with them (as well as with archery equipment) and it is my dream to one day shoot an elk with a rifle that I made!
@@Fresh_Tracks I think you could easily do it in CO. Take 2 years to draw and just backpack light into a wilderness area. Or hire a transporter to take you in on horses.
A guy could get annoyed with re-uploading content if he didn't enjoy it so much! Thanks for reminding me how much I enjoyed this hunt.
One of my favourite hunts to watch of all time
I drew an area 47 Type 2 antelope tag for 2023… I am taking a ground blind to hunt the water holes back home in Wyoming. I am taking my .54 caliber Early Virginian Flintlock and my .62 caliber transitional flintlock. I made both from scratch and have not taken an antelope with one yet. God bless the brotherhood of men!
Awesome video, very nice Pronghorn, great job on the filming. Jim truly did a super job stalking him with very little cover. Randy, you took him to a great place so that he could fulfill his dream. My hat goes off to you sir.
He is a true friend who took me to his "Deer Nirvana." We both enjoyed the pleasure of taking the other.
Incredible, so much respect for this fella. We hunt with flintlocks here in PA and it is not easy at all, I understand the challenge. Amazing!
He is one of the finest hunters I am lucky to spend time with.
I loved this hunt!! Congrats, Jim
The blacktail whisperer and randy getting it done👍
Jim is one of the best hunters I've ever met.
Jim seems such a happy, nice fellow, a great companion to Randy. Like to see more with him, if possible. Great, great hunt.
We have another with him that will be out in March.
My dad takes me hunting for deer in Texas and I really love it!
Awesome hunt you showed here, the appreciation for the animal, the friendship, the all around love for hunting was really brought out. God bless you all.
I appreciate this hunt, and the Hawkin put a wild spin on it.
This one gave me goosebumps just watching. That was AMAZING. My Dad would love that, he enjoys the traditional old school style hunting and firearms. He has a 50 cal traditional Hawkins rifle that he has taken some deer with, but it has been awhile. A huge congrats to Jim on sticking to his "guns" literally in this case and being able to fulfill such a dream hunt and a challenge. There is nothing like achieving a goal like that and with a friend such as yourself and vice versa. The true Sportsmanship and the bonds one builds with their hunting and or fishing buddies is like no other, whether blood or not. Way to enjoy God's country the way it was meant to be enjoyed and shared.
Goes to show that one doesn't need to buy a new HOT 6.5 Creedmoor with a Leupold and shoot 600-800 yards at a wary pronghorn buck, just use your hunting skills, and whatever terrain and cover you can to get close enough for an ethical shot. Just like you preach with your 7mm-08s and 308s from Pronghorn, to Coues, Whitetail and Mule deer to Elk, etc... under 400 yards, with what you are comfortable shooting accurately.
Jim is the example of a man being familiar with his firearm and making the most of it.
@@Fresh_Tracks absolutely, he has a goal in mind and keeps going after if, even if someone teasingly offers something with more range potential. Like they say, be scared of the man who favorite rifle well.
Nice buck! That one is average where I hunt for antelope, 17+ is what we get around here in southeastern Montana.
Such a great episode and story! You guys do a really great job with this show from the host, to the guests, to the camera men. So fun to watch Jim stick with the Hawken and make it work! Keep up the good work, folks!
Wooow.... that was an amazing ending... right after the secod shot. The slow motion victory celebration
great footage! Jim is a star!
I am so blessed to live within an hour of that area I am blessed
Yes, count that as a blessing.
Beautiful hunt! This is what it’s all about. The comradery, the ethics, the knowledge, the patience and the appreciation for these animals is amazing!
Jim Baichtal ~ Congratulations!
Hunt, amazing. Video, icing on the cake. The way you wrapped it up in the end with the music, you doubled down with extra sprinkles. Thank you.
I can't say I would not have picked up that howa. Nice to see Jim stick to his "gun". Good show.
Antelope are the prettiest big game animal in north america, probably next are sitka blacktails. I love how antelope flair their rear ends when they are alert. That hunt is a fun leasurely time to spend with a friend. Not windy and raining is a huge benefit. I think if you have a antelope decoy or a cardboard black angus cow decoy it would have ended sooner. But Jim did it without with a true primitive black powder rifle and not this modern muzzleloader crap they allow now with scopes and sabot rounds.
I need to leave AK and get back down there. Its expensive to hunt up here and its not easy walking anywhere and the weather is always crap. Great video guys.
Thank you...
Jim's my kind of hero right there!! NOTHING brings me more satisfaction/relaxation than shooting OLD school "Holy Black". I just don't get the opportunities to take the time to slow down and enjoy them like I would like. Watching this hunt has just made my day. FINE buck... great hunt!! Congrats. That's a Dilly Bar six-pack hunt right there (per man).
Dilly! Dilly!
Jim Baichtal , turn the clock back 180 years , he be mountain man JIm ! Nice guy , lovely personality and great ethics , he reminds me of Randy from 'Randy's Custom Rifles ' channel , in look a-like too ! Great hunt , good company , highly entertaining , great country , well done Boss-man 'R' and team RNH !
All true when it comes to Jim. A true friend of mine, and of the wild places and wild things he cherishes.
Keep them coming Randy. Great for the off season.
Now that is a HUNT!!! Awesome Sir!!!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Absolutely fantastic you two!!
Love them Old Hawkins real black powder and round ball!!
He is an amazing hunter and even better marksman.
I will be putting together 50 .cal Deluxe Kentucky rifle cap lock kit this summer.
I had the the exact same situation about a month ago with my first antelope to was my first buoy game animal ever and it went the same way I got emotional to and it was awesome for me
Easily top 3 episodes I’ve watched. Easily.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Randy Newberg, Hunter I enjoy them all
Awesome video, love speed goats.
What an incredible accomplishment! Well deserved trophy for a dedicated and down to earth individual. Great job, wonderful footage, Wyoming is most definitely some beautiful country!!
Terrific video! Two friends get'n it done! I love the adrenaline dump. Not just the fact that it was a huge buck, it was the strategy, the stalk, the patience and when it pays off it's hard to beat that feeling. That's why we hunt! Unbelievably well done Jim! And your camera guys are bad a$$!
Very kind comments. So happy you enjoyed it.
Awesome job Jim! I appreciate your conviction. I've harvested several mule deer with that same exact set up very satisfying.👍
Wow what a hunting. You guys have the best videos. I thought you were done with hunting episodes for the year; and you guys throw this one out there. Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching.
Randy, I know you don't publish scores, but was this buck a boone and crocket with a black powder? Seems like a great buck with any weapon.
You have a great camera crew. They make you feel like you are right there.
Yes, it was a B&C buck, when officially measured following the 60-day drying period. I'll tell the crew of your comments.
Loved seeing the Hawkin hunt. I hunt with one regularly myself. Fun watching.
Your friend Jim is one of those good ole boys. That was a great hunt and thanks for sharing
Yes he is. Thanks for watching.
Looks like the area around Lusk up to Newcastle. Lots of them buggers over that way. That was a awesome hunt and a really good shot.
Awesome Episode Randy! Congratulations Jim on a tremendous buck, hope he’s going on the wall in Alaska? I love the friendship that you guys have and your history together, that makes this one of my favorite hunts. Jim is a great guy and taking this buck couldn’t happen to a better person! Greg
I appreciate your comments Greg.. maybe we'll cross paths some day.
My wallet just got that much thinner after being turned onto elk hunting for the 1st time last season........ I dont even waste my $ on building custom cars anymore !!!!!!
Love to see him hunting with the Hawkins I have hunted for a long time the same way
That was just as much fun watching as being there .
Good to hear.
Not quite.. :-) Glad you enjoyed it...
You know... I remember this last year and thinking that I really, really appreciate Jim. His skill, passion and love for nature is contagious. I just watched this again and I like him even more. You just can't fake that. Hopefully we get a chance to see you guys do another hunt. I'm hoping next year I get a chance to try for antelope also.
Ok this I did. One winter on the way home from the bus stop with the kids, I locked them in the car, and got me a doe. I was so excited, I never put meat in our freezer before. I gutted her and when hubby came home from work, we loaded her, hung her and butchered her. It was the best darn meat!! I was one proud mama. I love Wyoming and hope to move back some day. People look and say its blah and empty....oh the colors on a cloudy day, the wildlife, the freedom. Love it!!
Such an awesome video. Great capture of the moment and the experience. Not a bad buck either! 👊
Great video as always Randy. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you.
Most awesome hunting video with the most awesome people!!!!!
4 preference points for Wyoming and I know the unit I want is at least 7 to get a tag. Jim did it right with his Hawken MZ being his gun of choice. When I do draw I will plan for a week looking for the buck I want and use a certain type of gun too.
Great vedio and great guys.
😁❤👍👍👍👍
I hope to someday take a nice big antelope with my recurve bow.
Nice! Congratulations!!
That was the best hunt video, congrats to the true hunter
Thanks for watching.
Awesome Hunt!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching.
Great video . Keep on keeping on
Great hunt, great people, great filming. Good job guys!!!!!!

Thanks for watching.
Very cool video!
Awesome hunt...congrats Big Jim! I've been building WY Pronghorn pref points in hopes of taking my kids on a trophy Pronghorn hunt in a few years.
I hope you do it. So much fun, especially with kids.
Congratulations you guys..
Love the videos keep up the good content
The kind of stuff that makes peoples lives change - Just from watching !!!!!!!!!!1
Those are Beautiful animals, went on a late season Whitetail hunt yesterday
Agreed.
Sitting here with my 3 year old son. Thinking this definitely looks like the field I work in lol all you need is a white truck for hunting them lol
Awesome episode though
Try taking about a 2x1 foot all-white rag/towel and flashing it like you are giving out an SOS distress signal. Worked three times for me; antelope are extremely inquisitive. So inquisitive that many times their kin stay there and watch me field dress (gives a person a rather creepy feeling).
He put a Hawken handshake on him.
I like the first video just as much anyone have a link to it.
Jim is the best.
That he is.
Epic
Funny I now Jim I grew up chasing blacktail
Where in Wyoming were you? I used to live in Greybull and I still miss it.
Awesome Awesome Awesome.
What unit was this and how many preference points does it take?
8 points at that time...
Everything else I've seen up to this point have been kill shots, that was art...
That is good to hear.
Nice. Buck. I leaves in Rock Springs Who. And. Shot some. Nice. Bucks too. So. Yes. Nice. BUCK!!!
Great video!!!
What happened to the new Titan that you brought out the older one?
This was before I got the new Titan.
Fun guns to shoot
Nice Hunt, great Footage.
Will not a lot of Meat bei destroyed with a Cal50 impact or is it reasonable?
From what I have seen if you hit a bone yeah its gonna tear up meat but other than that not really much and even the bone hits only destroy about an inch around it is blood shoot
@@loganhockenberry5026 Thanks for the answer and as he said, after 100 yrds the bullet drops down relatively fast down. So If might transfer less Energy than i expected.
